Yeah I think it's unforgiveable to be in that shape as a top level athlete. Why bother putting all the hours in to practice, study tactics, when you're going to give your opponents an immediate advantage by being obese? Bizarre especially with all the money at stake at top level snooker.

Tbf Allen probably can't afford the new suits right now if he lost weight.

Offset by savings on beer and KFC?

Not sure he can afford them either.

Talking of players weight, both Murphy and Maguire look heavier too. Murphy has always seemed to carry the weight well though, whilst Maguire and particularly Allen do look uncomfortable.

Murphy and Maguire are well overweight for sure but Allen is keel over heart attack obese. His gut spills out onto the table as he makes shots. Your comparison with Steven Lee is a good one. I've not seen many sportsmen fatter than Allen. The darts player Fordham being one of a few I can think of. Oh and Yokozuna!

The Bingham match just came on, and he's a good example of a players who not stick thin, but it clearly a manageable weight. It's obviously harder to keep in off the older you get, but from personal experience, I've put on a bit over lockdown and I'm 40 this year. My back has been playing up since Feb, there absolutely no way I'd want to be bending over a snooker table numerous times and stretching to play shots, surely that's got to be a worry for some of these players like Allen.

Allen is definitely too big. He's gotten worse in recent years but it's understandable given his off table struggles. A messy divorce and custody battle, bankruptcy, public fallings out with his ex, etc.

I was shocked seeing him on the TV today to be honest, not seen him play in a while and he is absolutely enormous. Fair enough he's had difficulties but he's still fairly young isn't he? He is not going to make it much beyond 50 if he doesn't drop some weight, in all seriousness.

I dont think Mark Allen is that oveweight when compared to Murphy and Maguire but he's definitely got bigger over the years and doesnt carry it as well as Murphy as said already.

He doesn't show it too bad in his neck like those two, but his gut is massive. I know he likes his beer too so that can't help.

Fair enough point.

Shame I can’t change the thread title to World Snooker Championship 2022/The Obesity thread.

Anyway, he may not beat Higgins, but thank god Thepchaiya didn’t drop off tour.

Yeah but it must influence his technique and make it hard for him to play shots where you are stretching. Also keeping concentration under lights in a hot venue. It can't help his game, he needs to get it under control.

You’d be surprised!

Can I just say every time I watch Kyren Wilson the match is super dramatic and fun to watch. He has a reputation for being dour? But I love watching his matches. He is positive, always backs himself and goes for the shots and has the mistake in him too recipe for entertainment. Probably my favourite player tbh.

Agree the gut on him is insane, disproportionate even for a fat person. Maybe that makes it look worse than it is but it's not a good look and you worry for his health especially with all the stress in his life as of late.

To quote my own post like a complete tosser, he is susceptible to pressure isn't he old Kyren. The amount of times you see him miss a frame ball.

It’s not often he’ll refuse a pot. I’d have McGill, Selby, Hawkins & Bingham ahead of him in the dour stakes. Been a good watch so far this tournament. Highest number of centuries recorded in the first round. All the big names still in, bar Murphy.

Agreed! It's been enjoyable so far, let's hope this keeps up. Love it when the snooker is on in the evenings after a shit day at work.

Murphy has had a shocking 2022! Seems to be dropping out tournament after tournament in the first round. Focusing too much on punditry at the detriment of his game I reckon!

Most players seem to have a season where it seems like they’re done. Selby, Williams, Higgins, Robertson even Ronnie to a small extent have all had seasons where nothing has gone for them. Yeah it’s great, still another ten days left of it too!

Agree on Selby and McGill. Dull as hell.

Hawkins and Bingham go for their shots though and are both really good break builders.

Personally I find Bingtao a bit dull.

Whilst Selby, McGill, Hawkins etc aren't the most exciting, they are definitely more enjoyable to watch then Ebdon, Dott or Griffiths back in their primes.

Yeah agree with Bingtao as well actually. Whenever he’s playing I always want him to lose.

Agree on that. I enjoy watching Selby due to the connection but can see why others would think he’s dull.
