Enzo Maresca wins over six wantaway Leicester City players and addresses Jannik Vestergaard future
The new manager says six members of his squad have been convinced by his methods and now want to remain at the King Power Stadium and fight for promotion to the Premier League

Enzo Maresca has won over six wantaway Leicester City players, convincing them to stay and fight for promotion to the Premier League.

The new City manager, who has his first competitive game in charge against Coventry on Sunday, says six members of his squad who had previously indicated they wanted to leave following relegation have now changed their minds having been swayed by the Italian’s style of football.

City have seen James Maddison and Harvey Barnes sold this summer, and more departures are likely, but while Maresca would not name the six who have reconsidered, he counts it as a success for his methods as he looks to build a happy squad. However, he has told the club they must sell any players who do not want to stay because he does want anything less than 100 per cent commitment to the cause.

Speaking on Friday, Maresca said: “The only thing I can say is that there are six players, they come to my office to say: ‘My idea was to leave the club in the summer but now I would like to stay because I enjoy the idea and enjoy the day by day.’

“So this is the only thing I can say, that six players, they come to my office and they tell me that. It's a good thing for me. But the guy that goes on the pitch is the player, so they have to be happy. If they are happy with us, I’m happy too.

“But if some of them want to leave, you cannot try to keep some players when their intention is to leave. I’m always saying the same. I told the club this on day one when I met them, that if there are some players that want to leave, allow them to go.

“I don’t want players who don’t want to stay. Because at the end, if they want to stay, they need to be sure 100 per cent.”

It is perhaps surprising then that both Jannik Vestergaard and Timothy Castagne are in line to start against Coventry. Both have spoken publicly this summer about their desire to leave the King Power Stadium.

Vestergaard’s resurgence is a particular shock. The Dane has not started a league match for 18 months after he was frozen out by Brendan Rodgers, and then injured during Dean Smith’s brief spell.

Just last week, the defender told BT in Denmark: “Honestly, I'm going after the five big leagues, and I understand from my agent that there is good interest. I have big sporting ambitions, and there is plenty of time left in the window, so I think it looks good.”

Asked about those comments, Maresca said: “When did he do the interview? Okay. The only thing I can say about Jannik is that since day one, he’s been working very, very well. He didn’t show me any intention to leave the club, he didn’t show me any intention to leave the team.

“For me, he’s an important player, not only because Coady is injured, but before that. Now, I have to tell you the same thing, the window is open, anything can happen. But for sure he’s an important player for us.”

Ward 2-3M

Castagne 10-12M

Hamza 5M

Praet 5M

Ndidi 15M

Nacho 10-12M

Personally,  I'd like to keep both Ndidi and Nacho but its too risky with 1yr left on their contracts.

Bring in about 45-50M and spend some of this on Chair and Piroe. Those along with Sakyi and Casadai should be good enough.

For me the worry is the fact the Saudi transfer window is open for nearly 3 weeks after the European window closes which could throw a bunch of spanners in the works

Anyone with less than a year except for Vardy should be told to move on.

....not Nacho.  He will be on fire in this division

Mixture of players who don’t want to be here or don’t appear favourable to Enzo for me:

Ward

Iversen

Kristensen

Souttar

Kristensen

Castagne

Soumare

Ndidi

Is.... Kristensen twice the player he was last season?

I think Ndidi, Kel and Praet will stay.

Ndidi isn't the player he was and I think it's a case of the devil you know. Stick around at a lower level in a place you know and see if you can pick back up.

No concrete noise on Kel and even with 1 year left he's worth more than people will pay.

Similar with Praet and I actually think he could back 15+ goals with a regular run in the side.

Think Castange will go, Souttar too unfortunately, and Kristenson on loan with no option.

I also have this odd feeling Vestergaard will stay, partner Faes for the next month with Cody out and actually look half decent. I think we may all look like tossers when we say he's a must start.

I would keep Kel. He is simply our most reliable scorer, seems popular with the squad too. I hope Daka comes good at this level, but Vardy is no more than an impact sub or cover now.

I think Praet will suit the new style of play. He has always looked in control of a midfield yet progresses the ball well.

Some of the others could do better under a new system, but I don't think Ndidi either suits the system nor has the fitness anymore.

I think we will sell Castagne and Souttar. Both at around 10m each.

Praet will also likely leave for peanuts.

If we sell a striker it will likely be Nacho due to his contract. And again expect around 10 to 14m for him.

Vardy will start when fit. But expect a season of niggling injuries due to age. Knowing his personality I think he will be well up for this season so wouldn't write him off.

Souttar will probably leave, which is a shame. Castagne will only go if somebody stumps up the cash, which hasn’t happened yet.

I’ve got a feeling Praet is one of the players who wanted to leave but now wants to stay. Ditto Nacho.

My point being that many of the players we assumed would leave might not.

True. We simply don't know who the '6' are. But guessing vesty is one of them.

If we get an acceptable offer for Nacho or Praet I think we'd sell based on their contracts. Maybe we accept to lose for nothing if Enzo feels they will help get us promoted. But it's bad business to lose players for free.

Time will tell.

We can only sell them if they want to leave. If they decide they’d rather stay, we can ‘accept’ any offer we want - they still won’t be leaving.

The issue is, whilst we are in the Championship any contract renewals or new signings need to be on wages reflective of being in the Championship, barely any of our players are.

If Iheanacho would be happy to re-sign for £30-40k a week then great.

Agree if a player has changed their minds and want to stay and they are in the last year then they should sign a new deal on reduced wages but include a promotion bonus and an agreed wage increase in future years should we end up back in the premier league. This gives us protection and gives the players an incentive to push on again.
