If we couldn't afford Sensi on a free transfer with a €2m bonus on promotion then not so sure of the veracity of this.

There is a difference between what one can and what one chooses to afford. 

 

I'm not buying that we couldn't afford 2m over a 3-year contract that's 600k per annum.

I think you're right. The way it's phrased leaves open the possibility that the club  blocked the move because it wanted a certain fee, but like you I get the sense it was Ward refusing a pay cut
