Non League Football 24/25

Bizarre game for Kettering today. Got a penalty at 0-1 up at Stratford (and a player dismissed for them too), missed, and almost immediately it was 1-1. Finished 3-3 after scoring a late equaliser. Other results went okay. Huge game vs Halesowen next weekend.

I did another double today 

 

1pm - Royston 3 Sudbury 0 

 

Sometimes you have these stinking games (well the start of it) which make me wonder why I bother. For twenty minutes it was mindless time wasting and launch it football. Thankfully Royston realised they were a lot better than Sudbury and ran them ragged. Left at 75 mins to make 

 

3pm - Cambridge City 3 Heybridge Swifts 2 

 

City have finally moved to their new ground and whilst the clubhouse isn’t fitted out yet, it’s an excellent ground. Treated to a back and forth game, more quality than the Step 3 from earlier. 

 

City after being tenants at St Ives and Histon looked to be working really had getting their own fanbase. Over 800 there today - helped by no United game but they would be very welcome at Step 3. They’ve notably improved since moving in

Think the fa need to step in with Tamworth outrageous ticket price. They are trying to charge premier league prices to cash in. £42 for a non league team is not acceptable. £30 should have been max.

The FA couldn’t care less, they are getting a cut of it aswell so in their eyes the higher the better

Without getting too political, this is the society that we’ve created. It’s supply and demand. Tamworth will get a full house, so why not charge an extortionate amount and milk every last penny out of it?

Absolutely agree. We live in and have accepted a world where everything has a price. Tamworth will have loads of daytrippers who aren't bothered about the club interested in a ticket, skin them. Spurs fans won't be bothered about paying the price as it's such a unique opportunity. A bit of a shame for the loyal Tamworth fans, but it is what it is. It's a small club using the opportunity to create as much revenue as possible from a one-off opportunity. Good for them.

I disagree entirely. We did some rough maths and we reckon the money they’ll earn from this increase will be roughly an extra three weeks worth of wages or so, I think it’s more than just a ‘shame’ that a loyal supporter, who have been there for years or turned to it recently with the rising costs/apathy of league football, would have to stump up £93 at cheapest cost for themselves, a teenager and an young’un, this close to Christmas. 

This might seem a bit deep over football but these sorts of clubs have been community asset for generations. It’s an increasing trend that what should be protected community institutions are seen only at their commercial value, and yes whilst they should be as financially efficient as possible to be sustainable, a short term stunt like this, in quite a poor and underdeveloped part of the country, is exactly the opposite of that what a club like a Tamworth should be against. A few weeks wages on top of hundreds of thousands of pounds they’ve deservedly gained on this run is not worth pricing out the community you’re anchored in.
 

I could say the same thing of pubs with the extortion that breweries and holding companies put on rent and stock purchase restrictions of landlords, as well as the shocking cost of showing live sport etc., but that’s less relevant here. Football, especially non-league, should be an escape from the drudgery and ills of normal life and society yet increasingly we see this kind of rug-pulling on supporters that just three years ago they were relying on at step 3, and we wonder why society becomes more skeptical, polarised and bitter as more and more what we thought was sacred become a cynical money-grab.

 

I’ll end this on a positive note: there’s plenty clubs in lower non-league, far closer to the breadline than the likes of Tamworth are that still go above and beyond to cater to their community, and hard-working volunteers who ensure that remains the case. As much as football is under siege from the cynicism of greater society there’s still plenty holdouts for affordable football that gives communities that has had its identity stripped or eroded over the last few decades something to rally around.

Yeh that's a fair point and also a great post. They should have split pricing then, cheap tickets for the regulars then OTT prices for the daytrippers.

The 'deep' part of your post is an unfortunate reality, there will be a 'pop' in society at some point/now.

Alternative option could have been playing this at bigger nearby venue to capitalise on this i suppose. Maybe at Walsall, capacity like 12k. Then again Tamworth do lose the home advantage

Literally against the rules now. And I think half of the time when you take away hire of venue, increased staffing costs, it’s actually not that much of a benefit

Anstey 2 Quorn 3 

 

A right ding dong. Quorn 2 up and cruising despite 6 first teamers out with some dual reg filling in the gaps. Anstey get it back to 2-2 with three to play. Equaliser is a right strike of fortune. Quorn nick it last minute and continue their excellent season. Probably deserved it in my opinion

 

Nearly 600 there. Nomads ground a lot better now they’ve changed the layout slightly.
 

Plenty of needle too on a derby becoming a bit tasty

I suppose, unless a club did a deal where the venue hosting. Like say Villa Park, hosted this. They were would be able to attract say 30k. Give Spuds an allocation of 10k. Least they get a decent allocation, in return Tottenham pay for the staff costs. £20 a ticket for adults, £10 for kids youd see a decent crowd.

Would never happen. How many people cry about 'the magic of the cup!!!' 

If Tamworth tried to cash in by playing at Villa Park, there'd be a justified tornado of 'games gone mate its really gone' comments.

Of course ground swapping used to happen in the past but I assume that was before the games gone crowd came onto the scene.

Like I say it’s banned. The FA Cup rules are written against venue switching unless police advice

Think Marvin and Hoops have gone. Can’t see Nike going anywhere at his age tbh - it’d take someone like Rudkin to pay money for him.

There was rumours of Barnet coming in for Nile. If he does go though I think we'll be fine with Jonny Edwards. Shame it never worked out for Hoops but I love how the gaffer doesn't care about leaving the big names out. He plays the true non league players who are more suited to that level.

I admit i hated when teams fortified they home advantage to play at the away ground. Farnborough v Arsenal sticks out in mind. Felt like Arsenal bribed there way to host the tie. Any how i do admit i like seeing big named players being forced to turn out at a non league ground. Remember the amount of security Arsenal hired at sutton united.
