The only thing we've learnt from this tournament is that the world cup is going to be a mess.

It'll be expensive, in stadiums miles outside of cities with terrible public transport, far too hot, a terrible format, a good chance of getting shot etc.

It makes you long for the days of Russia 2018.

Huh?

Cant speak for everywhere but the game at Cowboy Stadium and the one in Houston - no they are not away from cities.  Yes it will be hot outside, but they’re domed and the AC works great.  It will be expensive, and I promise not to shoot you……others on here though….

We’ll manage just fine without you and without CONMEBOL (if only you bothered to learn anything about how this particular tournament was run).

There also wasn’t a single shooting incident related to the tournament but, whatever, you had something you felt like saying no matter what actually occurred. Bravo.

Are you saying astronomical ticket prices were out of US control? Surely will be the same for world cup or worse.

I've been to a few 'soccer' games in the US and the prices are diabolical. Imagine paying $14 for a beer and they just whip a can out from under the counter then ask for a tip.

Awful world cup host choice, full of people who wouldn't know what a football was if it smashed them in the face, but money talks unfortunately.

Yes, many of the tickets were overpriced but most of those astronomical sale prices were quoted from resellers, I know plenty of people who were able to go without any problems.

I’ve been to hundreds of games in the States and have never had a stadium counter ask me for a tip so I don’t know what to tell you there. Maybe think of it as a convenience fee to allow you to actually take a beer to your seat. Life is better when you see your cup as half full (that’ll be $7 plus gratuity, cheers). I’ve also gotten free beers and drinks held aside after last call from stadium vendors to whom I’ve tipped a few bucks— and now a $14 beer becomes a $7 beer. Magic.

The States hosted Copa America in 2016 and it went fine. The 1994 World Cup also happened here and football didn’t burn down, trust me

(understandable why some on here may not know that actually happened 😉).

It won’t be a perfect World Cup, I’m sure there will be plenty of issues, but a country with giant communities from football-loving nations all over the world might not bungle this as badly as you think.

The days of £10 tickets and £2 beers at World Cups are long gone. And we’ve just had Russia and Qatar host the tournament, for Fuchs sake, let’s try to enjoy what we can in 2026 and 2030 before the tournament goes to Saudi Arabia.

I mean 2030 will also be an absolute joke of a tournament, being held on 3 continents ffs.

What time will the World Cup games in 2 years be on over here? That’s the deal breaker really. Nobody wants to wake up at 2am for Haiti v Albania, where’s the fun in that

Agree with you on that. At least there will be beer.

This has to be some kind of joke?

Look, there’s an easy solution for you - just stay home.  We won’t miss you one bit.

Due to the host locations, London will be between 5 hours ahead for East Coast games, 6 hours ahead of the central region (Texas, Mexico, Kansas City), and 8 hours ahead of the west coast games. So I would wager the earliest games will start around 4:30 in London, and the latest games will end around 2:30am. Honestly, that's not that bad, all things considered.

The world cup has gone to the dogs unfortunately.

Qatar, USA, 3 continents, Saudi

Im guessing you think it should only be held in Europe?

The euros is obviously so clear of the world cup but that's beside the point.

Hosting it in Qatar/Saudi with abominable human rights records and alcohol being prohibited, nice. Plenty of other Asian countries knocking about. As I said money talks.

USA/Mexico/Canada not as bad but the travel distances required for fans is pretty mental, at least it appears they've tried to vaguely have group games in close proximity.

Main gripe with US is the shit public transport and over-reliance on cars; not conducive to what fans want, which is drinking in city centres then public transport to game.

Imagine they'll attempt to put measures in place for this for WC.

Your average NFL stadium is out of town with a car park surrounding it that looks like it belongs at O'Hare international. A few exceptions to this (?) but on the whole it's shit.

MLS stadiums could be better but 11/11 US WC stadiums are NFL.

I agree about Qatar/Saudi btw

MLS stadiums wouldn’t be better, as the majority hold less than 50k.

Most cities will have transit - including free shuttles from hotel to the stadiums.

I know Arlington (Cowboy Stadium) is in the heart of the city, and has what you’re looking for in terms of a city center to meet, eat and have drinks.

I imagine the other cities also have similar set ups- after all, it would make sense since they host 75-80k every Sunday during NFL season.

You are correct though.  Games are being held all over the country.  A country to big to simply hop in a car and drive around in.  So costs will be higher depending on where you see games.  We do have discount airlines - Southwest used to be $49 to fly anywhere in US.  Not sure what the costs are nowadays.

I live in N Texas and will attend Cowboy Stadium - 30minutes from my house.  I’ll also go to Houston, which is a nice 4hour drive.  The others, I’m undecided on.

100% agree. Even if a stadium isn't right in the heart of the city, they've gone to great lengths to build up fan experiences around new facilities and make stadiums into a destination. The Battery in Atlanta, though not for the World Cup, is a great example, and worth the trip if you find yourself in Georgia. Philadelphia is 20 min away from our house, and they have a subway line from the city center to the stadium complex, plus a casino/hotel and a large bar complex called Xfinity Live adjacent to the stadiums.

The final is at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, which is outside of NYC. It's a 30 min train ride with a transfer from either NYC or Newark Airport, and the train drops you off on the doorstep of the stadium. There's even a mall with an indoor ski slope right next to the stadium.

The best world cups of recent times from an organisational perspective were Germany 06 and Russia 18. Tournaments are just better when they’re in Europe. The USA will put on a good show of course and will make a killing financially but if you want a good tournament give it to a European nation.

Everyone I know who went to Korea and Japan in 2002 had an amazing time.

I reckon the american WC will go down as one of the greatest ever.

I don’t know about that.  Especially with it being watered down.

I just don’t understand some peoples assumptions that it will be bad.

We already have the infrastructure in place.  Most of the stadiums are state of the art.

Each host city (in the US) has experience hosting huge events that attract people from all over the country.

Plus, each represented country will have a fairly large fan base already living within the US, so excitement levels should be huge.

Just seems to me like this should be a great event.

Will Bovril be available in the American grounds at the World Cup?

Being an ex-pat and lived here in the US for over 25+ years and see the game grow through MLS and other leagues while hosting various tournaments throughout the years (many teams visiting from Europe) I’m pretty confident it will be a well organized and entertaining event.

Of course the Copa America event was meant to be a warm up albeit not by the WC organizers but by CONMEBOL. Yes it wasn’t perfect - ott ticket prices and the debacle at the final. I thought after the wembley final and champions league final in Paris we wouldn’t see that nonsense again but it happened. Certainly will be very high on the list of all future organizers so expect to see tighter security and a larger police presence.

i have friends and cousins that are really looking forward to travelling over from Leicester, Leeds, London and other places to go see games with families based throughout the US and Canada. Of course it will be expensive with travelling involved that’s why we all are saving up from now!

there is good public transport around depends in which city you go but it will be ready for the fans. There is tail gating that will happen in car parks which is fun and different if you don’t want to pay out for concessions in the stands. Is it over priced in stadiums? YES and it’s one of my gripes but I eat and drink before or after the game if I want to save money. There’s plenty of time and choices. It’s not going to be like the Euros it’s different period.(I like the euros)

if you do decide to make the trip over you will have a uniquely different good time experiencing 3 different countries and cultures. People are very friendly. The food, music is so varied wherever you go.

im just happy that the WC event is coming to me in my lifetime so will definately go see some games with my son. Maybe England will win it this time lol.
