I don’t think that Warsaw defeat gets spoken about enough. They’re a big club, but they were literally bottom of the Polish league at the time.

They could’ve had at least three that game.

The media spent a lot of pre-match buildup talking about how their manager Czeslaw Michniewicz saw Rodgers as a role model too, which made it outrageous, almost offensive, that Brendan got completely schooled by him

The lineup at Warsaw was embarrassing, it was only our 6th (?) European campaign ever and we were putting weak teams out.

I know you were about the first to call it and got absolute pelters from many. I just read the forum for a long time before I actually joined but I agreed with your every word and felt the same in conversations I had with people in my life.

One that sticks to mind was a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the November. I just looked at results from around that time and actually, there were a mixed bag and by all means not a consistently bad run of defeats. I think it was just the way we were playing and the body language of the players and Rodgers, and the manner we were not just losing the games we did but any results we were getting, that had me suspecting a downwards curve. I still couldn’t tell you if I really expected us to go down or if I was just being overly dramatic but the fact we did, and sooner than I had even suggested, shows what a decline this is.

A few more people seemed to turn in the new year (2022) with the Forest defeat in the cup and the 3-2 defeat to Spurs when we were leading with second to go!

Far too many still didn’t think anything of it until the horrific start to the 2022/23 season though.

I don't think our drop off in performance from 2021/22 to 2022/23 was 'that' significant. We were frequently getting better results than our performances deserved and we then threw in a terrible goalkeeper the season after.

Coming 8th that season was a huge paper over the cracks job. We ought to have come about 13th/14th and I think if we did we'd have possibly taken more measures to stop what was going to follow.

That being said, everything that has followed since has told me they probably wouldn't have done. They would put it down to a blip and that we would be back pushing for the CL places the year after.

Absolutely. That is what I mean to say. The ‘results’ didn’t appear too bad but I remember being very concerned about it so yeah, performances were poor and 8th massively flattered us.

It was that time we became a literal meme due to our record defending set pieces as well if I recall.

Russian dolls! He hasn't even made himself captain of his own polo team - could the guy have any less leadership ability?

Not the biggest fan of the model but Xg wise we were 15th in 21/22 and 12th in 22/23

The biggest drop of was 20/21 to 21/22

Our home record against the bottom half side basically padded our points total that season

I think you are onto something here. It has often crossed my mind that there is some self-sabotage going on with Top

Do you also believe in alien lizard shape shifters attempting to create a new world order?

A well structured and respectful response.  I have followed City for 50 years so relegation has always happened at many points in the clubs history so I would not have been surprised at all. It was always going to happen, sadly.

From what age did you follow City?

Did you have the same approach when Pleat and the Shipman’s were driving the club to the wall in the late 80’s?

@sishades

Towards Pleat yes. There were no calls for the shipmans to leave and no social media to express a vitriolic hate campaign. Also we were playing at Filbert St in front of around 9000 if we were lucky. So when I see the club of today compared to what it was when I was younger it seems a galaxy away.

Hope he lost and fell off his horse personally

My memory is of lots of vitriol towards Shipman too around the time Pleat was fired, Martin George coming in felt like almost as important a symbolic change as Brian Little arriving in the helicopter.
