He only played 1 game last season and he was our best CB last season. He must have 2 years left on his contract. Faes and Okoli will leave, leaving us with Nelson Soutter and Vestergaard as our CBs. Aluko can fit in there too. We do not have to sell.

I like him but we almost definitely do need to sell if he's on high end Championship wages

Not necessarily fees but yes, the idea would be to sign a replacement(s) on lower wages. I don't think it's a daft suggestion tbh – sell a player for X million and X cash, sign players that are cheaper, perhaps younger, on less money.

It is if they end up being £3/4m plus their wages on top and they are not as good

But that's just how football works? You'd never sign any players at all if you were perennially worried about them not being any good?

That’s not the point though, you have a player on a 2 year contract that is at the World Cup. His value could go up, failing that he again wouldn’t need replacing if we were promoted.

With our recent track record you hope his replacement is signed on a free or a fee and is an adequate replacement potentially in both divisions.

Otherwise they need replacing again next year, even if they were sufficient at league one level.

The long term output ends up being a lot more than the wages he would be paid over the same time.

If he ends up being exempt from the SCMP, then he might as well be kept as opposed to another crap signing like Coulibaly coming in

What are you suggesting then to replace a championship quality defender?

Even 2m on a player plus their wages is the same.

What would be the point?

The only time it would make sense if they had adequate replacements on a free, and given our recent history of frees on high wages (BCR) and our poor track record with loans I wouldn’t think it’s worth the risk.

I don't disagree that the recruitment dept's shoddy recent record is cause for concern but we can't just never sign another player ever again lol

The long term output would only "be a lot more" if we get it wrong though, it's all hypothetical? You're making a lot of assumptions and what ifs here. What if we get it right? What if we sign players that can get us up and then adjust like 08/09 and 09/10?

I know I'm basically hanging my hat on us suddenly becoming savvy operators in the transfer market but when we can sell one player and potentially strengthen numerous areas with change left over then I'd veer towards selling.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one! Again I like Souttar but I can't imagine he wants to piss about at League One level regardless.

I'm not suggesting 2m – why do you keep putting figures in my gob lol

What do you think he is going to be sold for?

There is talk of £3m

How many areas to think that’s going to strengthen including his replacement?

that is his the cost of Souttars wages for a year but as I said previously if he is exempt from SCMP you are adding the replacements wage into the SCMP calculation.

£3 million (for argument's sake) is still a really good chunk at L1 level, there's plenty you could do with that. Cardiff last year said goodbye to a lot of players; spent about £1m and went up in 2nd. Bolton spent in the last summer window with about £1.5m on fees (they went up too). Of the top 6, none spent more than £2m.

I do understand your hesitancy to sell and replace given Souttar's quality and the recruitment dept. being blind. But we do actually need *some* players for this fabled rebuild and his sale could really help fund it – he also won't want to play in L1.

That said, there are plenty I'd sooner see out the door before him! We've droned on long enough though, drawing a line under it before we bore everyone to tears 🤝🏻
