Largely agree. We have better options available already than Cullen, Bob and Thomas. IMO McCarthy too. And there were patches we looked really easy on the eye.

Agreed. Hopefully the fact that he's given Thomas and Reid the chance in the first game of the season and they've not really repaid his faith means that those more stylistically suited will play next game. We may look a totally different team with athleticism in both full back positions and a bit of presence up top with the ability to go in behind too.

Watching Orient play Sheffield Wednesday on the TV they both look better than we did

They'll definitely both finish above us in the league then won't they

I appreciate what you’re saying and I’m not myself going to go all reactionary and write the season off after 1 game. I expected a draw or defeat today. We may have a strong season overall but a slow start is hardly a surprise.

But after years of the same old and failing to address our weaknesses, if you’re being objective and balanced in equal measure, you can surely see why people will fear the worst?

I can see why people fear the worst, sure, it's human nature after the last 2 years especially, but it's thick at best to write the season off after one game given the circumstances. The slow start was almost guaranteed given the turnover in players, change in playstyle etc

In the same way that Pep was pragmatic at Man City and Enzo was pragmatic with us in the Championship? I don't think the style needs switching up an enormous amount. We need to move the ball quicker and our players to make braver decisions. We also need Luke Thomas and Bobby Reid to be dropped and to replace the centre backs with 2 players capable of playing in the manner that the manager wants us to. There's time left in the window and we've already done a lot of business both in and out, so there's no reason to assume that it won't be done.

I understand that some of you don't like "tippy tappy" football, and that's fine. I didn't enjoy today either, but can be objective enough to understand how it could work effectively if we make the right changes.

Both examples there had the best players in the league and in the case of pep the chance to spend 50m on every position each season, they didn’t have to be pragmatic because they actually had capable footballers, even though pep did switch it up quite a bit last season. Trying to play out from the back with this team is suicide. McCarthy is shit, Okoli and skipp can barely kick a ball and souttar isn’t exactly great at it is just a dogmatic and unnecessary approach. If we had the personnel to do it then by all means have a crack. The only ball playing keeper we have wasn’t in the squad today. The problem I have with trying to play a possession based system is when teams don’t have the players like we don’t, it’s an absolute waste of time. I can be objective enough to have no frustrations with enzos team here as it was geared entirely on having the ball, but persisting with something that hasn’t worked for god knows how long with centre halves that I doubt could do 10 kick ups is another thing

Hm, yeah...

I am not disgusted,  but fairly disappointed.

We could have been 2 up quite early on if we had a footballer playing instead of BDR.

- Souttar is a bomb scare, cash in and replace quickly.

-  Convinced Cullen has literally just been signed by RM as a mate. Not convinced hes a professional footballer.

- Bristric,  Howell & Watson never reall got chance to impact the game so i'll reserve judgement.

I still think we'll do well this season, despite that performance & result.

Summed up perfectly for me

But what change in play style has there been?

Blimey we look so physically weak for this league. Relying on BDCR to be the sole striker shows the level of desperation or downright narcissism we’ve sunk too.

Immediate reaction team selection

BDCR and Cullen can’t play together. Cullen anonymous, but BDCR showed so many times he can’t receive the ball from the keeper. Assuming Page has gone, I’d play Skipp higher up the pitch away from Sammy who we need as the playmaker.

I feel bad throwing Bristric in there, but we need him up top to provide an alternative option. We have no one to aim to when we clear our lines. Cullen, Burns and Alves could do well feeding off second balls.

Stol

JJ Okoli Souttar McFarlane

Braybrooke

Burns Cullen Skipp Alves

Bristric

If Souttar’s gone, Hamza or Gray.

I'd think of playing Watson on the wing and play Ales down the middle.

No place for Cullen you may as well play Filbert the Fox  rather than the invisible man. At least you'd notice him

For me, we have done a lot of work on bringing players in the midfield positions, attacking wise. But we still have the same glaring holes as last season and before.

Striker - a lot of pressure on Bristvic who may be good or may not. If he is, he can’t do it on his own all season. BDR and Cullen are not the answer.

Centre back - ingrained failure from previous relegations and not suited to the style.

Centre midfield - feel we are missing a presence similar to how Kante and Ndidi were at the time we signed them. But obviously not for a second saying anyone at their level but that type.

Generally speaking, we just lack a physical presence.

I think it’s fair to say we need to address these areas over the next couple weeks of it could be a long season where possession stats and passes are high but cheap goals are conceded at one end and chances are not created as frequently as they should or put away at the other.

Wasn't good. We looked on top for the final 30 mins of the first half but other than that we looked second best. A better side beats us comfortably. A lot of improvement needed.

It’s a bit like watching the reserves play a cup game and thinking ‘a few of these will do alright’ and then remembering this is now our level 😂

Some absolutely grotesque performances from the “senior” players, Bobby Reid couldn’t trap a bag of cement and skipp in particular (who I naively thought might discover a bit of confidence in this league) were abysmal. Souttar was another I was willing to give a fresh start to has completely blown that by standing with his hand in the air like a 9 year old for about 30 seconds whilst the game unfolds in front of him 😂

It’s such a shame because despite how disillusioned I am with the club you want to do your best to support a reset and in particular encourage the young players, but it’s so hard to do when it’s the same sh!t we’ve all been subjected to for the last few seasons…!

We need to install 2 objectives to our game   ... win at all costs and once we are in front learn to finish teams off .... my judgement on Martin and his team is on hold until the transfer window closes .... because we need a few more quality players and some clearly need to be gone .... then we can see the style of football and the passion to play for the club evolve .... or not

McCarthy's performance was particularly damning of Martin's judgment.

He has spoken so highly of this guy - his ability, his experience, his  professionalism and then he put him in ahead of the pre-season first choice.

And what I saw was a panic-stricken performance - punching (not at all convincingly) crosses that could easily have been caught, poor distribution and a general lack of six yard box presence...

RM has a career average of 1.5 goals conceded per game and it's not hard to see why if he thinks McCarthy is a good goalkeeper...

Braybrooke needs to be in place of Skipp. He can do so much more with the ball in tight spaces and can actually play a pass.

BDCR needs to be far away from the starting lineup, he offered nothing and almost caused issues playing the Ayew role of dropping deep, and offering nothing up top. I feel he negated Cullen who didn’t do himself any favours, but I can give him the benefit of the doubt trying to play up top with BDCR is no easy thing to do.

The sooner Bristric is up to speed the better. I hope to see some strength and linkup play and none of this deep dropping.

Positives, some good play and the youngsters in Alves, Braybrooke and JJ did so well. They should be ever presents and hopefully improve as the season progresses.

It’s not all doom and gloom, a draw away isn't terrible.

The evidence was there against Northampton that the swamp is only half drained, today was unsurprisingly the same.

It’s too early to go in on Russell, but he isn’t going to succeed here if you don’t give him the right tools.

The spine of this team is holding everything back atm, Okoli and Souttar can’t play Martin ball, Skipp is just pathetic in pretty much every aspect of the game, and using BDCR or Cullen as a false 9 more than likely won’t work.

Two ball-playing CB’s, a new 6 and a physical target man are all needed, otherwise Martin ball isn’t going to work.

Saints fan here. It is objectively hilarious to see people parroting the same stuff our martin fan boys said.

he will not change his system. He will not be pragmatic. He we double down on it.

you will piss about at the back in a slow and ponderous style and make a ton of mistakes, and when fans get annoyed he will gaslight you and say you’re wrong.

those here who’ve cast judgement already are absolutely bang on the money. Those trying to delude themselves it will change are just that deluded.

he will also destroy the fitness of your team due to the fact they barely run and his training is focussed entirely on the players becoming crabs

good luck with the rest of the season, you’ll need it. Because even if you’re winning his style will suck all of the enjoyment out of going and probably fracture your support between martin fanboys and everyone else.

On that performance there is no way Macarthy, Dec a Diver and Souttar can start against Burton. If they do it's a clear demonstration that Martin will fail. Take a million less and get Souttar up to Sheffield the great lummax.

Was tossing that up as well. Was more just thinking keep Will consistent for now. Let him flourish.
