Wycombe Fox Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 I would have jumped for joy if this had happened! http://www.sportinglife.com/story_get.cgi?...CER_ONeill.html My favourite manager of all time, whatever club! Mind you Cloughie was something else too even though he did manage Sheep and Trees!
Master Fox Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 That's a real shame for England. I really wanted to see MON as the England manager.
Ricey Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 Just proves that the FA comittee that appointed the new manager didn't have a clue, how can anyone choose McClaren over O'Neill?!
Daggers Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 Just proves that the FA comittee that appointed the new manager didn't have a clue, how can anyone choose McClaren over O'Neill?! I don't understand why anyone governs by committee - especially the FA. Trouble is, they've always been an incompetant bunch of idiots - have a gander at Jimmy Grieves' autobiography where he rips into them. Still, lets give McClaren the benefit of the doubt until he's started the job.
Deathside Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 Just proves that the FA comittee that appointed the new manager didn't have a clue, how can anyone choose McClaren over O'Neill?! How do their records in European competition compare??
Jon the Hat Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 How do their records in European competition compare?? They've both been to the final of the UEFA Cup and lost?? MON has been in European Competition for at least 6 or 7 seasons Vs McLaren 1? As manager - clearly McLaren has involvement with United and England on his side.
Jay Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 The only reason Mclaren got the job is because he is a yes man for the FA!! if they tell him to play a player because of the sponsors he will MON is to much of his own man and wouldn't put up with the FA!! I also understand he didn't take the Boro job any further becuase he insisted on bringing Robbo and Walford and Boro wanted to being Southgate through with that sort of loyalty and principals he was never gonna get the England job
Schindler_Lad Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 Cant I say somthing dont be suprise if he comes to Sunderland And I am not talking bull shit
Chairman of the Bored Posted 7 June 2006 Posted 7 June 2006 A subdued, but graceful O'Neill talking on 5 Live. Would love to hear what he has to say about this in private! Not sure where his next move will be but looks like he has the blessing of his wife now, which probably means he'll get a job before the season starts. The Makems a possibility, I'd have thought.
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 The interview can be listed to from here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/w...and/5054668.stm I agree, he would have been great for England because he'd call the shots, but that's probably why the FA didn't want him. I think it would be great for his portfolio if he takes another Championship team and takes them back up - and who better than Sunderland. There's a lot of potential there, and then who knows what other great posts he would go on to
Ultra Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 Look out for him as a pundit on the beeb during the World Cup. Would be great to see him and Shearer analysing the same game..
Daggers Posted 12 June 2006 Posted 12 June 2006 Look out for him as a pundit on the beeb during the World Cup. Would be great to see him and Shearer analysing the same game.. His views on the interview process were entertaining, were they not?
Jimmy Posted 12 June 2006 Posted 12 June 2006 His views on the interview process were entertaining, were they not? i missed that what exactly did he say?
MC Prussian Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I'd fancy Martin O'Neill as an honorary sports advisor for LCFC.
Alexikokopops Posted 14 June 2006 Posted 14 June 2006 I would've jizzed all over your face if he'd become England manager. Fact.l
Daggers Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 i missed that what exactly did he say? His opinion was that at one moment he was getting the job, then he read about them wanting an English manager, then they got back in touch. While he was awaiting the formal offer he witnessed the news broadcasting details of the whole Scolari farce. Anyone that can make the rest of the BBC pundit team look like a bunch of idiots is worth his weight in gold. How the hell can this genius be unemployed at this moment in time? By far the best manager in the world, the best!

O'Neill also talked himself out of the job by insisting that if he was to take the job he'd choose his own backroom staff and he wanted nothing to do with the other England teams just the senior squad.
Daggers Posted 23 June 2006 Posted 23 June 2006 ...insisting that if he was to take the job he'd choose his own backroom staff and he wanted nothing to do with the other England teams just the senior squad. ...and that was wrong because?
Thracian Posted 23 June 2006 Posted 23 June 2006 Shades of Brian Clough. Martin O'Neill may subdue himself at times but he will never be a yes man and you just cannot imagine him putting up with the sort of dictats the FA would try to insist on at times. The England job is not just about being a manager but also a PR expert and eternal diplomat. I imagine O'Neill is so much his own man the FA believe it would be an inevitably uncomfortable relationship if he managed England. That's a pity because although he has perhaps not had enough experience of managing the very best players, I'd even question the merits of his moving to Celtic but that's another argument, I believe he has the intelligence and ability to adjust. England need someone with his passion, his instinct for winning football and his communication skills and I am not convinced that Steve McLaren is in any way comparable.
