Daggers Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I remember that in the days of public information announcements on tele, there used to be an ad telling car drivers to give cyclists a wide bearth. Is there one running at the moment that I haven't seen, one that instructs drivers to try to crush the life out of cyclists at any and every opportunity? Threatening to bump them from behind, push them into the pavement or clip them with wing mirrors? Is there nothing in the damn driving test about it these days? Grr... car drivers get on my tits.

Phube Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 When cyclists obey the rules of the road (i.e. red lights mean stop for EVERYONE!!!!) then so will I!!!!!
filbertway Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Bikes should be on the path, with pedestrians. Much safer then
Daggers Posted 21 June 2006 Author Posted 21 June 2006 Bikes should be on the path, with pedestrians. Much safer then I try to do that, but sometimes you have to avoid something by peddling at full speed and leaping off the pavement into the road without looking. I reckon car drivers should stop hunting around for girls in loose fitting summery tops and concentrate on the potential of cyclists doing just this. AND we get to jump red lights because we contribute nothing to global warming ... or, by virtue of the fact that we don't buy petrol, encourage war mongering in the Middle East. AND because we aren't fiddling with ourselves, chating on the phone, picking our nose, carrying victims in the boot or reading something we don't drive into the back of the vehicle in front. AND we don't break the speed limit. AND if we try to ride while under the influence of alcohol or drugs we collapse within feet of our starting point rolling around in fits of laughter ... totally avoiding killing anyone. - That is why we are allowed to ride in the middle of the road without using our hands, looking really clever.
Jay Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I guess you are a fellow cyclist then!! takes me 8mins max to get to work if I drove a car it would take about 35minutes to get through town!! what you ride, anything nice? just got myself a new Scott Bike, Hydraluic Disc Brakes, Deore XT, Rock Shox forks with 80mm of travel and lockout, Super light and super quick!!

Nothing great - a Carrera Subway2, a nice matt black one to hide me from cars so they see me as late as possible and a Krakken for pulling the kids trailer to and from school. It takes me the same time to get from home to town on bike and bus, and beats the car by a good ten minutes as there's never anywhere to park. Err...did I say car? Umm, I meant eco-fuelled transport with passenger sharing scheme subscription...

macbeth Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 The ad also instructed cyclist not to ride abreast of each other, but they still do!! very considerate of them too gives us old uns with failing reactions and eyesight twice the chance of scoring a " hit i miss my old merc with the emblem on the front that stuck up like like a gun sight
hairy Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 I reckon car drivers should stop hunting around for girls in loose fitting summery tops Thats going too far! Your having a laugh aren't you! You should be banned!
Daggers Posted 22 June 2006 Author Posted 22 June 2006 Thats going too far! Your having a laugh aren't you! You should be banned! Murderers dispose of the bodies using a bike? Oh no. Do rapists abduct woman and peddle away? - women fall off. International terrorists, do they transport their bombs using a saddle bag? I think not. Nope - it is your car that is a one way ticket to depravity and no mistake guv'nor. Would Hugh Grant have tried to have his flagpole waxed if he'd been on a treader? Nah, he bought a one way ticket to relationship breakup because he was in a car. Everyone knows that they are the best driver on the road, whcih means (using car driver logic) that virtually everyone else is crap at driving. QED!

Durnerz Posted 23 June 2006 Posted 23 June 2006 Cyclists are a pain in the arse. Time and again the fockers just pull across the road with no indication or without looking forcing me to brake hard and not just endanger my life but the poor bugger behind me. Stay on the pavement!

Time and again the fockers just pull across the road with no indication or without looking forcing me to brake hard and not just endanger my life but the poor bugger behind me. Stay on the pavement! Just doing the public a service by keeping you on your toes... Everyone knows that drivers frequently drift off from concentrating to dream about lottery wins/having sex with a bevy of Page3 lovlies or which driver they're going to pick a fight with next. Without the sudden change of direction of a bike in your periforal vision you'd probably have gone into the car in front, taking out a pram pushing lady and 3 OAP's in the process. I'll accept your gratitude now...
Rincewind Posted 23 June 2006 Posted 23 June 2006 I'll tell you a story. Some years ago I wrote a letter to the Mercury which mentioned the danger of speeding cyclists on the pavements who some take no heed of pedestrians whether they be able old young or in wheelchairs. I suggested that a pedestrian lane be vreated where pedestrians would wear helmets and lamps on their head thus not only avoiding the cyclist but would be able to use the road without the fear of being knocked down by a bus when jumping out the way and leaving the pavements free for cyclists. Not only did the Mercury publish the letter they also produced a cartoon with it showing the said pedestrians with lamps fixed to their head. I got a bit of stick from a couple of cyclists at work but in all honesty I have nothing against cyclists. I wish there were more of them and less cars on the roads. My point was that some do not take enough care. Can any cyclist really say that it's sensible to ride down an unlit road with no lights and wearing all black at night? These same cyclist would blame the motorist if knocked down. The police would examine the motorists car check his breath and he/she could lose points on his licence. The cyclist on the other hand would be carted off to hospital patched up and then given the freedom to try his luck next time at causing more damage to a 4X4 than to his 151b mountain bike when colliding.
Daggers Posted 23 June 2006 Author Posted 23 June 2006 I wish there were more and less cars on the roads. You want the moon on a stick young Ken my lad. More AND less cars on the road ~ you aren't currently devising policies for the Tory shadow cabinet by any chance? Can any cyclist really say that it's sensible to ride down an unlit road with no lights and wearing all black at night? These same cyclist would blame the motorist if knocked down. Has this motorist already been drinking. Shocking . I hope someone passes a law to ban hypothetical drivers from getting into hypothetical cars and overseeing hypothetical carnage at the expense of hypothetical camoflaged cyclists.
