Greatest footballer ever who played during your lifetime

I'm wondering who everybody thinks is the greatest footballer ever to have played during their lifetimes?

IMO it goes to Diego Maradona

I think 99.9% of people will agree with that one except some of the oldies who can remember others although I also had the likes of Pele and Bobby Moore JUST finishing their careers as I was born so it's a difficult choice, however I will have to agree and go for the Fat Argie as I actually watched him play at the top of his game in Mexico 86 on tv in THAT game against England.

although former ENGLAND international Carlton Palmer runs him a close second....... ok maybe not

He didn't walk on water, he floated about 2 cm's from its surface. Not just did he have an obscene gift but he is one of the nicest blokes in football - a genuine man that played for a small club for the love of the game rather than going hunting for big contracts.

A shame that England never played to his strengths, a team should have been built around him rather than trying to squash him into an average squad.

My brother was at Southampton Uni so I got to see him a few times - silent for 80 minutes, devastating the opposition for the other ten and winning matches.

If I wasn't going to say Le Tiss, then it'd be Tony Adams...as much for the way that he dealt with his addiction as for his captain performances.

Oh, and in third I'd put the mercurial Tony Currie.

Agreed.

He shades it over Pele because he was willing to come to Europe and risk a kicking every week from Italian and Spanish defenders, rather than pick up easy bucks in the far less pressurrised environment of the NASL.

Although injuries and stresses eventually took their toll and contributed to his subsequent decline into drug addiction, for six years in the 80s he dominated Serie A, which at the time was generally acclaimed as the toughest league in the world.

During this time he guided Argentina to one World Cup and came within a dodgy German penalty of lifting another one, despite his team being crippled by injuries and suspensions.

As Barry Davies might put it, "You have to say that's magnificent.."

It's an immensely difficult question. I didn't see Pele play that much.

It's also impossible to compare a goalkeeper with a winger or centre-forward.

But of those I loved watching how do you choose between Johan Cruyff, George Best, Matt LeTissier, Eric Cantona, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and many more.

All were real giants.

Just watch LeTissier's great goals video - what a genius. Bergkamp - what brain and touch. Best - the crowd buzzed every time he touched the ball. Cruyff - the elegant magician.

Pushed on one to watch on top form tomorrow - I'd have to say George Best. But there's not a thread or silk between them.

Ronaldinho. The way he burst on to the scene with his characteristic smile that showed he was really enjoying playing football, was a welcome change from the otherwise cocky and arrogant professionals. He's arguably got the best skills any footballer's ever had.

I'd also like to mention Schmeichel, the single most important factor in our '92 championship victory :)

How many trophies did he win, for club or country?

he fulfilled a dream of playing for his club. i dont think anyone can doubt he was great player trophies or not. to score the number of goals he did in a poor newcastle side and a poor England side is quite an achievement. if he had gone to Man utd he would of got a sackfull of medals and another 50-75 goals maybe, but for him it wouldnt of been the same as playing for his hometown.

Why has nobody mentioned Zidane? It would be him for me for now... until Ronaldinho emulates him. He will do one day I think- he is true class

Le Tissier Top Ten Goals

Mine would probably be Maradona from what I've seen.

The three best players I've seen play against Leicester are Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs and Marc Overmars.

Some brilliant goals there I wasn't aware he was that good!

Big fish in a small pond.

And completely unknown to most fans outside the UK and Channel Islands, because he was a failure at international level.

Although rightly revered by the saints he really has no place on this thread.
