Webbo Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 From the Sun Roo kid on the blockAugust 02, 2007 THERE have been some famous No 9s in Manchester United's history, now meet their soon to be famous nine-year-old, Rhain Davis. Brisbane boy Rhain was invited to join Sir Alex Ferguson's multi-million pound superstars after his grandad sent a DVD showcasing his abilities to the talent scouts at Old Trafford. The DVD features Rhain in action for Redlands United, an under-10s side who play out of Brisbane. The youngster can be seen teasing his equally tiny opponents with a touch of the Wayne Rooneys and was invited to Manchester for a trial on the back of his impressive recording. As a holder of a UK passport through mum Leah's side of the family, his move to United was quickly rubber stamped. Last month, Rhain and dad Mark moved to Cheshire, close to United's training base in Carrington. They will soon be joined by mum and the family's other children, Reeve and Emerson. Rhain now has the challenge of working his way up to the heady heights of the Red Devils' Under-12s. That will provide the first big test of his fledgling football career, as after he turns 12 he will learn whether he has done enough to earn a full-time scholarship with the club. What the people think about this?I know we did something similar with Weso but I can't see that it's right to take a kid to live half way around the world at the age of nine.It just seems wrong
DB11 Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 It's stupid. Also, if it fell through for him he would be a laughing stock (his grandad telling the papers etc.) Also, he must be desperate... if he is THAT good then surely it can wait until after childhood? He'll miss all his friends etc.
Tevez Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 Oh my days, is all i can say. I might have to send a dvd in aswell, cos i think i´m better than titus bramble? have i got a chance?
Cat Burger Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 From the SunWhat the people think about this?I know we did something similar with Weso but I can't see that it's right to take a kid to live half way around the world at the age of nine.It just seems wrong Except Weso was 15 or 16! The family clearly pressure him, but at least he's got one of the best opportunities you could hope for as a human.
Bryn Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 Looks good in the videos, the rest of his team just sit in defence while he tears the other team apart.
Webbo Posted 2 August 2007 Author Posted 2 August 2007 This reminded me of a documentary about a kid named Sonny Pike a few years ago who signed for Ajax at the age of 7,so I thought I'd look him up. Not happy reading. WHERE IS SONNY PIKE? Sonny Pike is currently living near the Scottish town of Dundee, and is studying psychology at Dundee University. He found the pressures of top-class football too much, and in 2003 decided to pursue a more regular caree - having been prive to sports psychologists he decided to follow that path. None the less, he still has a fervent passion for the game, playing Sunday league football for "Dryburgh Saints", as well as weekly 5-aside fixtures against other students, enjoying the, what he calls, "Fag at Half-time" culture. He is currently training for a Scottish F.A. coaching certificate, and as part of this, he coaches two Primary school teams in the area. Although he doesn't support a local team, he goes to matches regularly, purely for his love of the game. Sonny says that he's much happier away from professional football. He is open that playing professional football was his childhood dream, but the pressure placed on him by his club, agents, sponsors and, to a lesser extent, the media made him suffer a nervous breakdown in October 2000, whilst still part of the Ajax youth squad: "It couldn't take it, and I got ill, really screwed up. I stopped going to training and stuff, because I was so screwed up I couldn't hack it. Looking back, it's amazing how low I was. Ajax completely forgot about me, they didn't want to know, but as soon as I was better, they acted like they'd always been there for me. I realised how superficial it is at the level, and if I hadn't got back to form I bet they would have turfed me out. That's why I packed it in, it's so unstable.I guess it was during that period that I realised how much psychologists can help people, and I suppose I took it from there." Sonny Pike says he is not currently considering playing professionally, but he says he is not ruling it out as a prospect for the future, especially at a lower lever. Before coming to University, he played some football in the English Conference. He does not keep any ties with Ajax.
Pete_foxes Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 Except Weso was 15 or 16!The family clearly pressure him, but at least he's got one of the best opportunities you could hope for as a human. Clearly its a case of the family sending videos to every big european club in the land. In the hope of securing a deal for him. I mean after watching a video of him it could all just be a hoax. I could tell people to play shit to make myself look good & then record it send it in to United.. Or you've been framed Anyway.. fook playing football at that age. Its all about the Lego at that age
Jack Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 Oh my days, is all i can say. I might have to send a dvd in aswell, cos i think i´m better than titus bramble? have i got a chance? No offence pal, but who's not better than Titus Bramble
lildave3 Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 This is just plain stupid, not the fact he has moved from Australia, just the fact the hype over someone aged 9. He's got 7 years before he can even play, and anything can happen between now and then.
Raj Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 He'll lose all his strength and pace once he starts [email protected] he 's started already!!!!
Brainy Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 This is wrong. If he's so talented at the age of nine, he'll still be talented, if not better when he reaches 13. Kids at his age should be concentrating on education. He should be playing football with his mates in a fun-type manner, instead of having to impress Man Utd.
Toby or not Toby Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 This is just plain stupid, not the fact he has moved from Australia, just the fact the hype over someone aged 9. He's got 7 years before he can even play, and anything can happen between now and then. Well said, although he does look quality!
Simi Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 Ridiculous. I find this very wrong. If his parents pressured him into it, then that is very sad.
Leonisco Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 His dribbling looks amazing in those videos, like he's got the ball on a string. But you do have to remeber that 9-year-olds can't tackle for fook. It'll be much harder once he's up against proper defenders.

Maybes Posted 2 August 2007 Posted 2 August 2007 Hope he does well. Needs to concentrate on his education incase it all goes tits up.
Geo V Posted 3 August 2007 Posted 3 August 2007 I thought he was born in England and moved to Oz aged 4? He is one of ours . It does seem a little wrong in him and his family all coming to England but if it improves his and his parents quality of life and gives him a chance of a career, then all the messing about doesn't seem so bad. I'm no expert on the matter but apparently when clubs like Barcelona sign young Mexican players or South American players and throw them into their academies, they look after the family back at home or set them up big time when they move to Spain. In relative terms risking a few hundred grand to end with players like Dos Santos or Messi is a risk worth taking. Obviously thats my opinion on the footballing side but the lad himself must be the one who is football crazy and wants to do this as opposed to some mad parents trying to make money on their kids (just like I plan on doing with my son )
city1993 Posted 3 August 2007 Posted 3 August 2007 Looks like they need him after the performance against Inter... dear oh dear... what a shame they lost... NOT.
Finnegan Posted 3 August 2007 Posted 3 August 2007 With a name like Rhain Davis we've got to be able to find a bit of Welsh blood in him somewhere.
Stevosevic Posted 3 August 2007 Posted 3 August 2007 Don't really see a problem with moving him here. Better now than when he's 13/14 when it would be harder to leave friends, if he moves now he will be settled for the years when he will develop the most.
