It's about time James was recalled. I still think he's England's best keeper.

Quality keeper and better than Robinson by far. Get him in the first team Maccer!

And I still disagree, although my opinion of him has improved a hell of a lot since his move to Pompey.

Phil Neville plays well for Everton and he's a bit of versatility. Far better players but he's a harmless enough player to have in the squad.

When you consider the fact that he has some 60 caps when a true footballing legend like Le Tissier had less than 10, its something to cry over. It really is.

To be honest if we want to base the team on recent form in the prem, then shouldnt James be in as number 1 over Robinson? It'll never happen of course, but without any outstanding keeper we should be responding to which English keepers are in good form and at the moment that's James and in fact it was James for large parts of the last season... beyond the keepers it's a shame about Bentley being omitted, with so many injuries it'd have made sense for him to be included IMHO.

Why have a friendly after just 2 games of the season???

Im confused....then everyone moans about the amount of games these poor players have to play.

I bet by the time the friendly is played,McClaren will have a depleted squad,because of the mystery injuries his top players will have....although they will be okay by the time the next Premiership games are played!!! :D:unsure:

It cracks me up to read that Rafa Benitez says that Gerrard will play against Chelski with his broken toe but then needs to rest but England can still call him up regardless! Surely the player is owned by the club who don't gain anything if a player gets injured on International duty???!!! The FA can fook right off in my opinion and if a player or club refuses to let the player leave, then so be it because you always get injuries in International matches, ask Jamie Redknapp and going back a bit more Neil Webb, both whose careers went tats up after getting injured on International duty!

After watching Mich Richards play at centre-half today, I think I`d like to pair him in defence with John Terry as that would be an awesome central defensive partnership. Fudge knows who`ll play right-back though lol

Why name Gerrard in the England side when he isnt going to play. Mclaren is a twat, get him out.

How can Benitez possibly rule him out when he played a full match today? Surely that is down to McLaren?

England coach Steve McClaren is likely to be without midfielders Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves for the friendly against Germany on Wednesday.

The two players were in action for their respective clubs on Sunday but look set to sit out the Wembley game.

Liverpool skipper Gerrard has a fractured toe and needed an injection before their draw with Chelsea.

Manchester United star Hargreaves made it through their Manchester derby defeat but has a knee problem.

Hargreaves stood out on his first competitive appearance in United colours, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson affectively ruled him out for England.

"Owen Hargreaves is very painful in his knees," he said. "It was his first game and he will need a few days to recover. I don't think he'll be available for Wednesday."

Gerrard is hoping to sit the game out in order to make sure he has fully recovered for England's two Euro 2008 qualifiers next month.

"I need rest to be ready for the qualifiers in September," he said. "The sensible thing is to make sure you are ready for the big games."

Gerrard added he could only play for England if an X-ray on Monday shows the condition of his toe has improved.

"If the X-ray shows the crack has healed I will be playing for England but I can't see it because three days ago I had an X-ray and I had broken a toe," he added.

"I have spoken to the England manager Steve McClaren a couple of times and I will speak to him on Monday I guess."

Reds chief executive Rick Parry told BBC 5live's Sportsweek: "If we had two games in a week we would be looking to rest him in one of them.

"We need to treat him with care. Bluntly, our focus is with Liverpool. As Rafa has said, it is the sort of injury that is going to need careful nursing and rest."

David Beckham could feature after coming through his first full 90 minutes for LA Galaxy at the weekend, but did report some swelling in his ankle afterwards.

Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson has expressed his doubts over how long Beckham, 32, can continue playing for England while he is playing in America.

Robson told BBC Sport: "I would pick him to begin with to see how he goes - in the short term he looks OK.

"But the longer he plays in America, with respect to the football being played there, the less competitive he will become.

"It is not the greatest level of football. He will lose the match sharpness he needs to play at the top level with England."

McClaren will also await fitness reports on John Terry, who made his return from injury for Chelsea against Liverpool, and Michael Owen - who played 20 minutes for Newcastle against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Portsmouth centre-back Sol Campbell has already been forced to pull out of the England squad because of a groin injury.

Gary Neville - who has not played since March because of an ankle problem - now has a calf strain and is set to miss the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia in September.

Gerrard won't play I don't think. He had a painkilling injection before yesterday's game so he could play.
