Lord Nibblington Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Most of them don't crash in a big ball of fire.
adam Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Although they dont crash as often as cars, if a plane does crash your fooked!
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Imagine the engines cutting out at 35,000 feet!

OriginalRobboFOX Posted 30 August 2007 Author Posted 30 August 2007 Imagine the engines cutting out at 35,000 feet! We'll just glide to safety....
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 We'll just glide to safety.... The wings snapped off aswell, it's a nose dive. You might survive
Flynny Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Turkey Assuming the plane doesn't nosedive into the Med, you mean? Right?
James. Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Assuming the plane doesn't nosedive into the Med, you mean? Right? This is it. I had my fingers crossed it wasn't Turkey. As it is planes flying to Turkey are statistically the most likely to have technical faults.
Tommy G Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Im afraid you were always going to get stick from people when you started this subject! I hate flying aswell, so haven't been abroad for the last few years because of it. I can see where your coming from mate, my advice would be to get pissed on the plane maybe? or take some sleeping pills or something?
Phube Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Most of them don't crash in a big ball of fire. Exactly:

adam Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Definately agree with the getting some pints down you before take off. Safest option.
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 30 August 2007 Author Posted 30 August 2007 Cheers for everyones lack of input.... I have got some Diazepam from my Docs so hpefully they'll calm me down....
hairy Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 We'll just glide to safety.... Jets cant glide. They drop like a stone without propulsion.

What a very frequent flyer told me, is to just think of the crew - they fly everyday, it's there job, and so it's in their own interest that the plane is safe to fly, unlike when you get in your car and piss down the A6, you don't even think about the car or safety - the airline industry is a 'safety' industry, the businesses survive through not crashing... it's like being scared of heights, for most people they aren't scared of the height they are scared of falling from the height, if you are happy you won't fall you don't feel scared. with flying, it is such an unnatural environment, humans weren't meant to fly through the sky in tin boxes, the fear comes from the fear of crashing not fear of flying, take away the conviction that the plane WILL crash, and the fear goes - i fly quite a bit these days and get all nervy thinking the engines will stop or a wing will fall off, but the crew will have checked everything religiously for their own benefit and thus yours... failing that, deep breaths and hard drugs.
stripeyfox Posted 30 August 2007 Posted 30 August 2007 Take off is the bit that scares me most. That's when the plane's engines are at full power and the airframe is at maximum stress. Also, a failure here when the aircraft is at low altitude gives the pilot very little chance to do anything. This all sounds bad, but once you're up in the air after a couple of minutes, there's less chance of something going wrong. I am also wary of flying - more so than I used to be but am usually reassured when you look aroud and see how relaxed everyone else is!

Most crashes can be attributed to one of the following reasons 1) Pilot Error 2) Hijack or Sabotage 3) Mid Air Collision 4) Catastophic failure of hull/wings. Luckily all these are very rare. Thousands of flights jet in and out of the UK every day. Some crew memebers make multiple flights on the same aircraft daily. The maitenance regimes and safety procedures on UK flights are excellent. I can't think of a major fatal crash in the UK since Kegworth in 1989 (though I'm sure someone will correct me).
