MC Prussian Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Holloway's made a bid for the 35-year old striker. Why? I know they've been at Argyle before. But can he solve our problems up front?

Who knows... I think the names mentioned so far are to add a certain personality more than anything. As long as we can get a taker for Cort then fine. If we can't get rid of any players our wage bill is going to be bloody ridiculous!!! The source is the Mercury.

All about options I suppose. Bringing in both him and Howard is a surprise though, I would have thought it was to be 1 or the other.
Matt Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 source? http://www.thebluearmy.co.uk/details.asp?k...122007360120831 And, in another surprise move, City manager Ian Holloway is bringing in his former Plymouth striker Barry Hayles for an undisclosed fee.
dandannieldanok Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 What's the point if we're getting Howard?
MC Prussian Posted 31 December 2007 Author Posted 31 December 2007 What's the point if we're getting Howard? Replacement striker - killer joker substitution for Howard?
ibbosuk Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 What's the point if we're getting Howard? The point is Hayles is back up for Howard.
Babylon Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 What's the point if we're getting Howard? The point is Collins John will also probably leave as his loan is up soon. So we'll have Fryatt, Hume, Howard, Hayles and Campbell (when fit)
Chelve84 Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 i think howard yes, because he is the sort of player we need, and i would take hayles but only for about £100k the fella is 35yrs old, i just hope we dont go after a load of oldies, howard, kavanagh, hayles, etc. we still need creativity, and hope he gets some bright young players who play with no fear and commit defenders.
Rocky Dennis Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Makes sense really. Ollie knows him very well, im certain he'll offer more of a threat than Cort,Elvis,DeVries. Good back-up to Howard,Hume,Fryatt, will only be a short term deal id have thought? He's 35- So what?
Stevosevic Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Not impressed with Hayles to be honest. He's not a big man, hes 5ft 9, and has scored twice this year in 22 games. Similiar records to our players but in a better team. We'll see how it works out.

Jay Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 they seem to call him Lord Barrington of Hayles at Plymouth anyone who goes by that name gets a from me!!! he's a striker who's not just about goals though he's a striker who brings others into the game, holds the ball up and creates an outlet for the team I am sure we wouldn't have conceded a late goal against Charlton if we had a couple of wise old heads up front who could kill the game and this is exactly what Hayles will provide imo
Jonezy Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 I'm sure Ollie wants him because of his character as well. He will offer something on the training ground and in the dressing room as well. And we are believe or not short on strikers with Cort being told to find a new home, MDV nowhere to be seen, John going back to Fulham and DJ out for months.....

Steptoe and Son are reported interested in Cort, to replace Herculees.

Sparky Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 You have it about right, would be the third time Ollie has signed him. what do u make of Hayles Pete ?

I'd have Lord Barrington of Hayles, DEFINITELY. On a serious note. Am sure he won't be starting every game- he'll be for when Ollie wants to mix it up a little. Would imagine Howard and Fryatt would be our starting pair (Howard would be Fryatt's dream in knock downs if we gave them the right service).
Plymouth Pete Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 what do u make of Hayles Pete ? He has been an excellent signing for us, Either start with him and sub him in the second half or bring him on to change the pattern of the game. PS Babylon I am not bitter or twisted and log on to any site that involves Argyle transfer activity, and the first match I saw at Filbert Street was in 1961 and I have always rather liked Leicester. You are welcome to Ollie as now we can go back to being Plymouth Argyle instead of "Ian Holloways Plymouth"!

brookfox Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 This tells you why we're signing him... "We are looking for strong characters to stabilise the team and see how far they can go," Mandaric said. "Barry would be one of those people who would help them" I reckon Ollie has also seen that the likes of Chambers, Odihambo, Sappleton, Kee etc. need another 12-18 months until they ready and sees Hayles as the stop gap, and also to help them develop, until they're ready. Could be a better option than a 28 y/o who blocks their way into the first team...
Joe. Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 OriginalRobboFox will be requiring a larger bra...
MPH Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 i see this as a signing with a double effect thingy.. lump of meat upfront and also a model professional, positive thinker blah blah.... its all about changing the atmosphere at the club
Plymouth Pete Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Hayles is very mouthy and always getting booked. Has been the Argyle skipper since injury to Paul Wotton. Is an experienced pro and always gives his all. Good luck to him and Leicester good bit of business for us both.
