Young apprentice award

The only one in that list I can see mounting any kind of challenge to Mattock is Mark Beevers (Sheff Wed)

I suppose Tommy Smith's in with a chance also how well Ipswich are doing in the league.

Personally i think Mattock's got the best chance.

If Mattock doesn't win it, then i'd like to know what the criteria is for such an achievement. As you say, he's gone from Academy (which won the National League) to the first team (20+ appearances) and then on to the England Under 21's, where he became the 2nd youngest player ever to play for them.

If this isn't rigged then it's a dead cert Mattock will get this.

Theres no competition really. None of the other players have progressed as much as Mattock has these past few months.

Rising Leicester City star, Joe Mattock has made the shortlist for the Wickes Young Apprentice Trophy 2008. Wickes, the Official Home Improvement Partner of The Football League Championship is looking to recognise the best Young Apprentice in the Coca-Cola Championship once again this season.

The young left back will face stiff competition from the other six shortlisted players. The full list reads:

Anthony Acheampong (Cardiff City)

Mark Beevers (Sheffield Wednesday)

Mark Devonshire (Barnsley)

Lee Hills (Crystal Palace)

Joe Mattock (Leicester City)

Tommy Smith (Ipswich Town)

The Wickes Young Apprentice Trophy aims to recognise achievement both on and off the pitch. Having recently been selected for England U21s and firmly establishing himself in the Leicester City first team, it has been an exciting season so far for the talented 17-year-old. He comments 'It is real honour to be shortlisted for the award, these sort of things give you a real confidence boost.'

The winning player will receive £5,000 for his club's youth development programme, as well as holiday vouchers to enjoy. The club of the runner-up will receive £3,000 and the third placed club will receive £2,000 towards their youth development scheme.

Last year's winner was former Cardiff City Welsh wonder Chris Gunter. Chris capped off an amazing season, seeing him break through into the Cardiff City first team and becoming a regular first team player. Gunter has since gone on to make his full international debut for Wales in May 2007, the youngest ever Cardiff City player to achieve this. His talent caught the eye of a number of Premiership clubs, and Chris was bought by Tottenham Hotspur in January, making his debut in the FA Cup Third Round replay against Reading in the same month.

Wickes Sports Sponsorship Manager Matt Holmes comments, "Wickes are very proud to support this award and it's recognition of the best Coca Cola Championship Apprentices - both on and off the pitch. Last year's winner Chris Gunter and his recent achievements are a shining example to other players at this stage of their career in terms of what can be achieved. The shortlist this year is extremely strong and we wish all of the players involved successful careers in the future."

A judging panel, made up of ex-Premiership and Republic of Ireland footballer Andy Townsend and representatives from The Football League, Wickes, The Professional Footballer's Association and FourFourTwo Magazine will select the overall winner.

The judges will be looking at various aspects of the Apprentices' careers to date including discipline, education, attitude and of course, performance on the pitch. The winner will be announced and presented with his award at the Football League Awards ceremony, which will take place at The Hilton Hotel in London on Sunday, 2 March 2007, and also at a first team match before the end of the season.

From the OS.

Surely the only candidate to win is Joe?

Its not just based on appearnces and talent. Its to do with their academic achievements aswell. Lee Hills has been playing amazing and also has A levels in japanese and other stuff, dunno what the others are like.

Isn't he the CB at sheff wed who isn't really that good?

Yep. Although the football league seem to think otherwise.

How the hell have they come to that decision? Mattock became the second youngest England U21 player this year!

That is the most inexplicable piece of bullcrap I've ever heard
