Lester LXXIV Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/disp...;pNodeId=132401 Saw Clapham but nothin about Whalley EDIT: Seen it now!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Whalley would be brilliant, can't see it happening though. Clapham, not convinced but we could do with another left-back if Olly doesn't rate The Second Coming Of Christ.
brookfox Posted 31 January 2008 Author Posted 31 January 2008 Leicester City are trying to beat the transfer deadline to bring in left-back Jamie Clapham on loan from Wolves for the rest of the season. And going in the other direction, there is a possibility that Alan Maybury will return to his first club Leeds. Darren Kenton is already at Elland Road, but his loan spell could be made permanent. City boss Ian Holloway has also been linked with Preston midfielder Simon Whalley, with QPR also rumoured to be interested with the transfer window closing tonight. The move for 32-year-old Clapham, the former Tottenham, Ipswich and Birmingham man, is seen as bringing in an experienced left-back to ease the pressure on emerging teenager Joe Mattock, who has already needed to be rested this season. The probable departure of Kenton and Maybury, who also trained recently with former club Hearts, further clears the decks for Holloway to make changes. The City boss did eye his former Plymouth charge David Norris, who handed in a transfer request which was turned down by Argyle. The player apparently wanted to be reunited with Holloway but Ipswich have had an offer for him accepted after no City bid was forthcoming. It will be up to the player to go to Portman Road now, or wait until the summer in the hope that Holloway goes back for him then. City's youth team striker Billy McKay is set to join Hinckley United on loan until the end of the season, while young goalkeeper Carl Pentney has this week joined Unibond League side Ilkeston Town on a month-long loan. City chairman Milan Mandaric has not ruled out any deadline-day arrivals at the club. However, he said he would not raise supporters' hopes by promising new signings before tonight's midnight deadline, having already missed out on some targets this month. City have signed six players - strikers Steve Howard and Barry Hayles, and midfielder Matt Oakley in permanent deals, and Hungarians Gabor Bori and Zsolt Laczko, and goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, on loan - since the window opened on New Year's Day. Mandaric said: "Whether we will be able to do anything else in the next 24 hours remains to be seen. "There's always the possibility of arrivals but I am not going to make any promises. "We have tried to bring a couple of players in. We lost those and the last thing I would want is to say something and it doesn't happen. "But we can still bring in loan players after the deadline." Mandaric admitted City have also turned down "aggressive approaches" for some of their players. Ipswich have had two offers rejected for Gareth McAuley, who is set to be offered a new contract, while a Premier League club has had a seven-figure bid for Mattock turned down. Mandaric said: "We have had a lot of aggressive approaches for some of our players. We are turning everything down for the simple reason we are establishing a team with quality players to get out of this division. Any player that will help us will stay with us."
James. Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Nice to see us maintaining our policy of looking at players in positions we need strengthening. It's not much to ask but as the Great Striker Stockpiling Disaster of 2007 showed we seemed to overlook this basic requirement before Holloway came along.
MikeyT Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 I watch football al the time its my biggest passion but i have never heard of Simon Whalley! Is that bad?
Lester LXXIV Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Simon Whaley YES PLEASE. I know nothing about him, is he one of their best players? How much do you think he would cost?
andyh1884 Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Clapham is gash, I imagine negotiations are in progress for Wolves to pay us to take him off their hands. Wolves fans think he's piss-poor. I don't see him strengthening the left back position
teblin Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Exactly what we need a midfielder who can play wide and central and a left back.
MikeyT Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Exactly what we need a midfielder who can play wide and central and a left back. Agree!
Daggers Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Wolves fans think he's piss-poor. Fans are the last people I'd ever rely on in regards rating a players ability - fickle, ovine idiots for the most part. I have always been impressed with Holloway's track record of identifying needs within a squad and making sensible decisions.
brookfox Posted 31 January 2008 Author Posted 31 January 2008 Agree! You didn't even know who he was a minute ago! (Not that I'm in a position to mock, I don't either!)
Mark Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Exactly what we need a midfielder who can play wide and central and a left back. Not a left back that isn't better than what we have though. I'd rather us stick with Mattock than Jamie Clapham who's no use to Wolves.
MikeyT Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 You didn't even know who he was a minute ago!(Not that I'm in a position to mock, I don't either!) I know i looked him up on some random website!!!! (I'm actually lying and i mis read that posters response)
Ric Flair Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 The Whaley rumour is in today's Daily Mail, we've bid £1.5 million for him.
MikeyT Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 The Whaley rumour is in today's Daily Mail, we've bid £1.5 million for him. Is he any good? Im being serious now...because ive never actually heard of him or ever seen him play! I guess he must be ok if we have bid 1.5 Million for him, if indeed that newspaper is right!
andyh1884 Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Fans are the last people I'd ever rely on in regards rating a players ability - fickle, ovine idiots for the most part.I have always been impressed with Holloway's track record of identifying needs within a squad and making sensible decisions. I agree he's strengthened where required, I'm just not convinced that a 32-year-old who's not made a single start for Wolves all season and only 1 sub appearance is the best choice to bring in as cover/competition. But then maybe he's the only choice
mancunianfox Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Clapham is gash, I imagine negotiations are in progress for Wolves to pay us to take him off their hands. Wolves fans think he's piss-poor. Supporters are idiots though. Our supporters think Richard Stearman is piss-poor.
davieG Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Not a left back that isn't better than what we have though. I'd rather us stick with Mattock than Jamie Clapham who's no use to Wolves. Did you not take in Blanderson's headline - CITY TARGET WOLVES ACE
andyh1884 Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Supporters are idiots though. Our supporters think Richard Stearman is piss-poor. What? All of them? I don't. Clapham's made 1 appearance as sub all season, no starts. Maybe it's not just the fans who don't think he's up to it?
teblin Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Not a left back that isn't better than what we have though. I'd rather us stick with Mattock than Jamie Clapham who's no use to Wolves. Didn't mean to start, but we need back up, he's better than Shush!
STUHILL Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Not interested in Clapham, more interested in the Whalley rumour! How good is this guy and is he a natural winger?? I've heard of him for Preston but never caught my attention. Anyone any idea of how much would cost??
Steven Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 City's youth team striker Billy McKay is set to join Hinckley United on loan until the end of the season, while young goalkeeper Carl Pentney has this week joined Unibond League side Ilkeston Town on a month-long loan. I hope it doesn't mean he misses out on a trip to the states.
Daggers Posted 31 January 2008 Posted 31 January 2008 Supporters are idiots though. Our supporters think Richard Stearman is piss-poor. Good case in point. I thought he was total gash without hope of ever improving. I was an idiot, and wrong.
