LeeCovFox Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Expected team: David James (Portsmouth), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Ashley Cole (Chelsea); David Bentley (Blackburn), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Ashley Young (Aston Villa); Joe Cole (Chelsea), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United). Quite refreshing I think. Interesting to see how Ronney does up front with Cole either dropping off or as a partner. Will work quite well I think, Cole usually impresses me for England, but I think he will have more creative freedom away from the left side of midfield.
MikeyT Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Its a decent enough looking team, however i think Gareth Barry is a little unlucky not to be playing instead of Hargreaves, and i would still have Lennon in the squad somewhere, rather than in the under 21's. But i'm not Capello and i'm not being paid the silly money he is for these desicions. All the best to the lads tonight.
Tommy G Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Glad to see hargreaves in there, a lot better player compared with barry. Upson though? Not so sure about him.. I assume thats down to injuries

LeeCovFox Posted 6 February 2008 Author Posted 6 February 2008 Joe Cole upfront = I really think that it could work. I'd imagine he will be dropping off Rooney, or that both will swap now and then to take on that role. Can imagine it giving opposition defences trouble. Besides, its a friendly, why not try?
davieG Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Wes Brown - where are all the English RBs Not overly impressed with the team as whole I'm sure they're are capable of winning but inspiring a nation - well not me that's for sure.

I'm not entirely sure we have anybody at all that is capable of inspiring the nation. I get the feeling that people are becoming increasingly bored of international football. I know I am. I'd much rather watch City lift the FA Cup than England lift the World Cup. Unfortunately both are about level in the likelihood stakes.

Perhaps inspire the nation was a tad optimistic but I can't see that team getting many out of their seats other than for the Anthem before the game.

Would you rather we stuck with the same old players? I think it's good he is looking outside the usual suspects.
Mark Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Looks good apart from Wes Brown starting ahead of Micah Richards, odd choice.
Big Ol' Bob Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Very good squad IMO. Capello has included players who have been on form alot this season, Upson has been immense at West Ham and has'nt missed a game for them all season, him and Rio look like they could be a strong centre back pairing,Wes Browns inclusion is the only one which really worries me.Ashley Young and Bentley have both been terrific also so far this season, both should provide alot of flair from the wings.
Joe. Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Not impressed to be honest. Wes Brown? Why? Matthew Upson? Why? Is Capello really suggesting these two will actually hold down a regular first team place for England? Not too fussed about the midfield, that looks good enough to me. I'm still unconvinced by Hargreaves if I'm honest, I'd have much preferred to see Barry. And Joe Cole up front? Not a fan I'm afraid. I'd have put Crouch or Owen over him up front. Ah well it is a friendly I suppose and a chance to try things out. But I just see no logic behind some of these decisions.
Big Ol' Bob Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Matthew Upson. Has'nt missed a game for West Ham so far this season. West Ham currently have the best defensive record outside the Top 4. I dont see why this bloke is getting slagged off before he has even stepped foot onto the pitch. Even the Daily Mail have had a fair old go at him today. Wes Brown I agree with, Richards is possibly a better choice for pace and attacking, but perhaps Capello likes what he see's in Brown and wants to give him a go at right back. Just give the new boys a fair chance, if they were as bad as everyone is saying then I doubt they would have got anywhere near the squad let alone the first team. It is a friendly afterall...
Ozwin Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 I see it as a 4-3-3 rather than Cole and Rooney just up front. Cole and Young will be supporting Rooney down the flanks and we'll have more wing play. Better than the typical english 4-4-2.
James. Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Whether you like the line up or not it's clear that Capello has picked the squad without conforming to reputations and media influence. That in itself is already a vast improvement and encouraging for the future.
lildave3 Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Pleased with this team, especially the wingers. And am I the only one who actually rates Wes Brown at all? Granted I think Micah Richards is much much better but...
Maybes Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Pleased with this team, especially the wingers. And am I the only one who actually rates Wes Brown at all? Granted I think Micah Richards is much much better but... I have never been a big fan of Wes Brown but to be hones this season he has done very well for Man Utd. He is a very solid defender. However like you said I would have prefered Richards.
davieG Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Would you rather we stuck with the same old players?I think it's good he is looking outside the usual suspects. Not at all but I'd like to have seen SWP or Lennon someone of that ilk who makes you stand up when they've got the ball at their feet. Just looks like a workman like team.
lildave3 Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 good team but no Hargreeves Hargreaves is there...
Tommy G Posted 6 February 2008 Posted 6 February 2008 Pleased with this team, especially the wingers. And am I the only one who actually rates Wes Brown at all? Granted I think Micah Richards is much much better but... No I rate him aswell. Brown is a quality defender not much else. Probably wins the title for the Thickest footballer around aswell. I would have chosen Richards over Upson, I mean who would you be more scared of going into a 50/50 with? Upson is a big girls blouse, I reckon Richards adds the steel to the back four so I would choose him ahread of Upson.

Play Woodgate at centre back with Rio, and Richards at right back.
