James. Posted 13 February 2008 Posted 13 February 2008 The Scenario: I'm standing in Canary Wharf tube station on my way to the Watford game last night queueing for some cash. The woman in front of me is taking awhile so I peer over to see what she's doing and notice she is taking out £400. Finally she gets on with it but the next time I look she has gone and £400 is sticking out the dispenser like the Holy Grail I've been searching for in the LCFC forum. Without really even thinking I grab the money and run after the woman. However the woman I thought it was isn't the right one. So there I am standing in the middle of the station with £400 in my hand. What do I do? Again, without really thinking I turn around and give it to a couple of policemen standing next to me. They put it in an evidence bag and thank me for my honesty. I suggest an announcement over the station tannoy and then off I go. The Dilemna: What would you have done? As soon as I walked away from the police I kind of regretted not taking it! All I got out of the whole event was a thank you from a copper and a clear conscience. However I could have been £400 better off! I admire my own honesty and the fact my natural reaction was to give the money back to its owner but looking back I almost wish I'd just taken it and had one hell of a good time. Hmm...

I could have had jelly and ice cream and party bags and pass the parcel and everything. But no. I gave it to the British Transport Police.

IWhen that woman realised her mistake she would have gone to the bank or police who would have gone throught the TV footage. The would have observed the time and the other people using the ATM after her and seen you comple with a big cheesy grin and draped in full LCFC colours hot-footing it away just after pocketing the cash. Of course the police could be inefficient fools and fail to find whose responsible. Is it worth the chance?

Is it worth the chance? I very much doubt that they would have checked the cameras. If you said to a policeman, I took out £400 and left it in the machine. They'd call you a plonker and that'd be that.

Actually James. The right thing to do would of been to sat guard at the ATM until the £400 was sucked back into the ATM. As this is what they are programmed to do if no one takes the cash after X amount of time. So really, you've not helped things at all.

Yeah, but these are UK police - not like the one's you have decended from convicts And good for you now-otherwise-named-foriegn-titled-bro. You did the right thing. I guess a lot of people would rationalise that the bank would cover the loss and they wouldn't miss the money, which is true, because they wouldn't be accountable for it - the woman would. They would say that once she has withdrawn it, it's her property and that she lost it, not the bank - which again is true, unfortunately. Again some might reason that if she's withdrawing £400 in one go she must have plenty, but that's just kidding yourself to salve your conscience. Could be every last penny she has to pay something really important. Chances are the cops will have properly turned the money into lost and found and done it by the book (Sure there is an elimant of corrupt police, but there are plenty of good cops (no, it's true, honest!) and the fact there were 2 of them in a crowded place makes it harder for them to pocket it (IE, they'd both have to be bent and hope no one noticed)) So James. Just hope the woman gets her money, appreciates the gesture and that it's passed on in general (though you just know she's gonna be a miserable cow who goes and takes it out on someone totally innocent! Que sera sera!) Addendum - just read Manwell's addition. He's perfectly right, I used to work for Nasty West and that does happen. However the practicality of "defending" an atm from a queue of busy Londoners and tourists should definitely be taken into account. I think that, whilst in some ways the easiest and correct way, would also have been the most difficult!
