Tigers New Stadium Proposal

The Mercury can today reveal how the £60 million transformation of Leicester Tigers' ground will look.

Stunning new images show that the seats and stands of the Welford Road ground will reflect the team's iconic green, red and white colours.

Tigers bosses said the stadium's curved roofs and bright design will make it unlike any other sporting arena.

They also believe the 30,000-capacity stadium will help them make the Tigers "the biggest rugby club in the world".

The club is planning to build a three or four-star hotel with 175 bedrooms, a 450-space car park and new accommodation for Leicester College alongside.

The city council's planning committee is expected to make a decision on the proposals at a meeting next week.

The authority's officers have recommended councillors allow them, as they are "important for the development of the city of Leicester".

If councillors give the plan the go-ahead, the first phase of work could start as early as May.

Tigers managing director David Clayton said: "We are proud of the design and think that when people see it they will instantly think of Leicester and the Tigers.

"We told the architects we wanted something iconic and different, something unlike any other stadium, and we believe they have achieved this.

"Smaller parts of the design could change, but this is how we want it to look.

"Our colours will be incorporated into parts of the ground, and we would clearly want it to reflect the identity of the club.

"The design will be classy and will show the brand of Leicester Tigers."

Council officers raised a few concerns about the project in their report.

They said more study was needed on higher traffic levels caused by the ground's increased capacity.

The report said: "The highway authority considers the transport assessment as submitted to be unacceptable and has asked for additional information."

The council has asked the Tigers to look at similar-sized stadiums around the country and study the impact of traffic around those grounds.

Leicestershire police said the Tigers could be a "soft target" for terrorists and that relevant security measures must be included in the design.

The force also said there must be adequate lighting in car parks to deter criminals.

The plans would allow for a maximum of 10,500 spectators in the North stand, 6,500 in the West stand, 7,100 in the South stand, and 6,500 in the East stand.

City council regeneration spokesman, Coun Patrick Kitterick, said: "I think this is an exciting and interesting project.

"The Tigers are well known all over Europe for the standard of their rugby and this would mean they will have a stadium to match."

The first phase of work would be building the North stand, which would take about 18 months.

Part of the new stand will be built at the back of the existing Next stand to allow it to continue to be used during construction.

The old stand would be demolished in the summer of 2009.

The replacement stand would be open - giving a total ground capacity of 23,472 - by the beginning of the 2009 season, in September.

The second phase would be the expansion of the West stand, to increase capacity to 28,271, by September, 2010.

Phase three would be development of the South stand and construction of the hotel and car park, with an opening date of September 2011.

Puts City to shame.

And I can see us loosing more fans to the egg-chasers with the increased capactiy, since for instance, I like rugby alost as much as footie and it's cheaper - you just can't get in without a season ticket these days.

I would ever abandon City of course! :scarf:

Very impressive.....perhaps City could apply to Tigers for a ground sharing Scheme once the Tigers new ground is built......maybe, then, they might get a decent surface to play on :whistle::whistle:

After the egg-chasers have mashed it up... I think not!

Its not like we know how to pass any way, may help out our long ball game and would stop opposition midfeilds dominateing us

Super 14 teams, so yes Potter. If the English Premiership of rugby is like the, hrm, French league of Football? And the "Celtic League" is like the Bundesliga - then the Super 14 is the Premiership or La Liga.

Like the design much more than our generic bowl.

Reckon that'll probably be the name when the Walkers deal runs out.

I like the look of the new Tigers Stadium.

I love the design, too many boring bowl of stadiums being built.

Do you think the Tigers could pull in more fans next season compared to us?

I think we'll still average more than them next season. They sell out every week but thats only 17k, we'll probably average around 20k, providing we do well.

I was talking to a Tigers ST holder once and discussing this. He seemed to think that the Tigers sold so many STs because it was the only way to get a ticket to some matches. He thought that if they had a bigger capacity they would sell less STs and people would pick their matches.

Ive been to a couple of tigers games at welford road and theres been quite a few empty seats around. Im guessing they do the same as us and assume that season ticket holders are there for every match when in my experience, it seems quite rare for a tigers season ticket holder to actually be at every home game.
