Hendrie Deal Done

Posted on: Thu 28 Feb 2008

Leicester City today completed the signing of Lee Hendrie from Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old playmaker becomes Ian Holloway's eighth signing since arriving at the Club in November and goes straight into the squad to face Cardiff City at Ninian Park on Saturday afternoon.

The former England international joined the Blades on a three-year deal at the start of the season after an impressive 14-year stint at Aston Villa.

Hendrie also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Stoke City last season - where he played 28 games and scored on three occasions.

City boss Ian Holloway said: "Lee has a quality that Leicester City want in their ranks. He had a great season while on loan with Stoke last year and he is a player that can unlock a door for us. He will help the team.

"I spoke to him on Wednesday and he is a very motivated individual. That is a trait that I like. He will add to the group.

"In my eyes he can play wide left, centre midfield and wide right. I am really looking forward to working with him."

Hendrie made his senior debut for the Villains in December 1995 and went on to have a glittering career at Villa Park. He was a big part of the England under 21 set up during his youth - receiving 19 caps at that level. He also has one full cap for his country to his name.

All in all Hendrie made an impressive 251 Premiership appearances for Villa, scoring 27 goals.

He joined Stoke City on loan in September 2006 and became an instant hit with the Potters fans. He was recalled to Villa for a brief period in January 2007, but joined up with Tony Pullis' men once again on transfer deadline day until the end of the season. Hendrie's contract with Villa ended that summer, and Sheffield United won the race to his signature in July.

He has made 14 starts for the Blades to date, scoring on two occasions. He has been handed the number 35 shirt by Foxes boss Holloway.

Looks like he will play on either wing.......where will lasko and Humey play I wonder!!!

I guess it's not a bad signing given our midfield crisis. I just hope Holloway can try to bring in maybe one or two more half decent players becuase we bloody well need them.

Laczsgoals will become a schoolteacher and Humey will be moved to centre-half if necessary! :D

Let's just hope it's one of those times a move didn't work out for a player.... ever the eternal optimist. :)

He'll be out on the beer/drugs tonight. Lock up your daughters/wives etc.

His shirt number says it all.

35! Ridiculous the number of players we get through these days

Good old Monk.

How's it going Monk?

Monk. I'm fed up with HSBC. How would you like to mess about with my pension for a bit.

It's worth a massive £3,000 right now.

I might retire next year and live extremely frugally.

If last summer someone said we'd have a midfield of Hendrie, Clemence, Oakley, Hume with DJ and Howard upfront and one of the best defences in the league, I'd of been planning my routes to premier league away grounds.

Absolutely shocking that we are in this position.

Exactly as I suspected.

Give me one reason a decent manager like Kevin Blackwell would farm out a still good player to a fellowChampionship outfit?

I should feel uplifted but I actually feel we're being taken for mugs.

Even if we get him fit and finally squeeze some form out of him, Sheffield would then have him back.

davieG, Random copy and paste!!

I'm not sure about him, he was good in his day, but the comments from the Sheff U fans put me off a little :(

To ensure you got the credit for being first  - people have been known to moan when their post is lost :dunno:

When they ask for him back, we'll send them Elvis Hammond (ankle).

Foolproof.

If he put his head down and either

a) ran the ball off the pitch

b) ran in to offside positions

He'd be a fine match for Elvis and DJ!

Anything else your villa fan boss has to add? Becucase he sounds like an interesting chap, does he fancy going for a beer some time?

He thinks we should adopt the Euro and throw off the yoke of American influence.

He also prefers margerine to butter and enjoy holiday in the mediterannean.

His background is in distribution of class C drugs and proliferation of continental, hooky cigarettes.
