Gandhi erected in Leicester

Yep Babs, i'm getting sick and tired of 'sugar coating' and being PC, just so we don't offend or be seem to be racist\ignorant!!! Why would our city need a statue, ignoring the facts about Gandhi, he is the 'father of the nation' of india not Britain!!

Still, I accept the will of the majority, and with Leicester having a very large hindu population, you would be more likely to be outnumbered!! But, there's nothing wrong with a honest debate, the statue IMO has done more bad then good, people are looking at that statue and thinking it was allowed to be done 'for the asians', 'oh it's in belgrave, so gives a flying fook, it's full of asians anyway and they love gandhi'!!!

Asian's from my descent, or those who know the facts, think it's some kind of laughing joke, and ask WHY????

Many questions have been asked, and many FACTS have been shown, everyone can make there mind up, I just hope people forget about this statue like many others!!!

I think a statue of Martin Luther King would have been more apt.

It would have been an option, personally I don't think we need a statue!!

If the hindu population of Leicester wanted an icon that was more representative of them and multiculturalism they should have chose Dr Ambedkar!!

I think a statue of Sachin Tendulkar would be far more relevant

Neither do... but if they are saying it's to show our "diversity, integration" etc. Then king would have been better icon for that if I have been given a choice.

The reality is it's not. It's Hindus wanting a Hindu icon in "their" area, nothing more.

I would agree, there is a certain element to it, Gandhi was gujarati, hindu and father of the nation in India. Though a great myth, as FACTS have come to life, Indians are extremely proud of him, obviously blind to the truth.

The FACT is that every nation needs a hero, and the governers of India chose Gandhi, thus creating this mythological 'mahatma' who even reached the heights of hollywood, even the film Gandhi was majorly flawed, 3 major events of the film had nothing to do with Gandhi at all, they were part of the Gaddar Movement, and the Gurdwara reform. But the truth will always previal, although Gandhi did alot of good for his hindu brothers, and I must state for his hindu brothers only, he also did alot of bad, some of his acts would put him on par with some of the biggest tyrants of history!!!

To get a statue done, it takes a few nodding heads and a vast financial backing....these sorts of events can't be done without having sufficient funds, that's for sure!!!!

Like i've said, that charity is spending over a million rupees, there is a certain significance to spending such amount, one I would say is to endorse there ancestrial father on this city, making Leicester more closer to there roots, further rubber stamping Leicester as 'little india'!!!!!

PM pays tribute to Gandhi statue

Gordon Brown paid a whistlestop tour to Leicester yesterday to open a £2m training academy and visit the city's recently unveiled statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Flanked by police outriders, the Prime Minister's four-car cavalcade arrived at the bronze statue, in Belgrave Gate, to a warm welcome from the crowd.

He was presented with a garland of roses and chrysanthemums by a representative of the Indian charity Samanvaya Parivar, who funded the statue.

After pausing briefly for photos and to lay a similar floral garland at the feet of the great 20th-Century leader, he wrote a short message in the visitors' book.

It read: "This statue is an inspiration to all who will visit. It reminds us of the great courage and vision of Gandhi and the great changes we can all work together to achieve."

And if Vaz wasn't one of his arse licking cronies he would never have known about it.

But as Vaz stated... the statue is a symbol of our diversity *cough cough bollocks*.

Even worse it overshadowed the £2m British Gas training academy, which is far more important then the statue!!

I watched the unvieling of the statue on the news the other week, I could see the diversity, it was a bunch of 40 odd hindus and 2 white people (some MP and the Mayor)!! :D

Not only that, but the symbol in the middle resembles the teeth of the almighty sarlac in star wars.

This leads me to believe Singh is not only a terrorist, but a Sith warrior... hell bent on the elimination of all Jedis.

That's one big fanny!

Gandhi has no connection with Leicester at all. A statue of a local hero or sporting favourite would have been much better.

80% of people wanted a Linekar statue I read a long time ago. The local council heroes being morons as usual, I've come to expect that from this country.

Linekar doesn't deserve a statue and neither did Ghandi.

I think Samilktray does, though.

I agree but Gary Lineker does deserve a statue, he along with Banks and Shilton should all have outside the ground
