Shannon-McCann fund link probed

Karen Matthews is being questioned at Wakefield police station

Claims the Madeleine McCann fund was approached for money to assist the search for Shannon Matthews are being investigated by police.

It is understood during the time nine-year-old Shannon was missing, the McCann family was asked for money towards helping find the schoolgirl.

West Yorkshire Police said it had been in touch with fund representatives.

One man has been charged with abducting Shannon. Her mother, Karen Matthews, has been arrested.

The Madeleine fund was set up to help in the search for the three-year-old who has not been seen since she went missing in Portugal in May last year.

It is understood one request to the fund was made by a man claiming to be a freelance journalist who was seeking money to help in the search for Shannon.

The Madeleine fund later received a one-line email asking for money, and on another occasion someone claiming to be close to Shannon's mother made a call to representatives of the McCanns.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police confirmed they are investigating the alleged approaches to the McCanns.

Meanwhile, detectives continue to question Shannon's mother, Karen Matthews.

The 32-year-old is being held on suspicion to pervert the course of justice.

Michael Donovan, 39, has been charged with abducting Shannon, who was found safe on 14 March, 24 days after she went missing.

Mr Donovan, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, who was formerly known as Paul Drake, is the uncle of Shannon's stepfather Craig Meehan.

Judging by the story so far, and that article ffuter posted, i wouldnt rule it out. Would'nt surprise me if it was a set up at all. Though what their motives would be i dont know. Chandler?

I feel there maybe a few more twists and turns in this sad, pathetic tale. It may well pan out that gaining money by deception was the primary motive behind her disappearance but I'm hedging my bets on this hypothesis for the moment. A week or so ago there was a rumour doing the rounds that Shannon was due to be taken into care on or around the time of her 'abduction.'

One aspect of the case that should not go unremarked upon is the extraordinary conduct of the police. There were a number of press reports circulating when Shannon was 'found' that the police had been tipped off about her captor very early on in the investigation (Crimestoppers and a missing children's charity had both been contacted). There appeared to be foreknowledge that Shannon would be found alive and that a family member was involved in her kidnap. There was also a noticeable drop off in community support for the Matthews family in the run up to Shannon's discovery (captured in that appalling promotional DVD for Craig Meehan aka C4's 'Cutting Edge').

By leaving Shannon in situ with Donovan the police were exposing an innocent nine year old child to great danger. Perhaps they were feeding Shannon's extended family enough rope to hang themselves. Naive and jejune as this may sound West Yorkshire's Constabulary's first concern should have been for Shannon's welfare.

Gathering evidence to convict her scumbag family should have come a distant second (if indeed that was the reason for their laissez faire investigating).

Mother from here sources possibly get's some info where her gorl is. Mother is swayed and attratced the attention, sympathy, love and money, lifestyle etc and thinks twice about notifying the police!!

Mother's associates also have a big part to play, they also on the band wagon, go grifting for money. Mother feels possibly intimidated or possibly inclined to follow there advice also

Girl is found, enquiry begins and now she has been caught out!!

Overall it's a very sad case for, I hope for the girls sake that she will be looked after etc. As for the mother, I cannot say what I have written is correct but I do not think she planned this from the start, I think she has been an opportunist, and i believe she should be punished accordingly!!

There was an episode in Shameless, not long before Shannon went missing if i remember correctly, where the Gallagher's pretended that Liam had been kidnapped.............or as channel 4 put it on their website

Frank Gallagher has won the lottery - or so the residents of Chatsworth believe when Yvonne announces it on the local news. Frank's not about to tell that he's never bought a lottery ticket in his life when free drinks are coming his way.

But does he fess up when Liam is kidnapped and the ransom fee is his winnings?

Ian gets caught having sex in Karen and Jamie's bed and Karen is not pleased.

In the ensuing row, Ian lets out in front of Jamie that Karen once slept with Frank. This sparks the newly weds' first marital crisis.

Of course you desperately want all of us to believe otherwise. It simply aint cool to be seen to be swept up in a great moral panic over northern chavs. But anyone who posts on a 'General Discussion' forum automatically signs up to be a member of the common herd.
