Manwell Pablo Posted 7 April 2008 Posted 7 April 2008 The Olympic torch has twice had to be extinguished by officials in Paris amid protests by anti-China demonstrators. Does this mean we can add Tibet to the long list of countries that France has surrendered to?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 April 2008 Posted 7 April 2008 All except for a small village of indomitable Gauls in Armorica.
Babylon Posted 7 April 2008 Posted 7 April 2008 I think you're missing the point. This is the first global issue in a while where there has actually been a wagon to jump on. I think you're the one missing my point Monk... do you think China has only just started treating people badly? If people were so bothered about the human rights of the chinese people or those in tibet, why are they only now protesting. It has been going on for 100's of years. The only reason many are protesting is because it's a "fashionable cause" at the moment. I'm not including chinese and tibetan nationals in that, they have been fighting it as long as it has been going on. Unlike the soap dodging liberals trying to wrestle blue peter presenters to the ground.

I agree that many of the protestors are simply looking for a cause to jump on and this one fits the bill nicely. Half of them probably don't fully understand what the f**k they're opposing anyway. They'll be down my way at the beginning of May for their "anarchic" May day protests against global capitalism. Last year it amounted to a few stoned people with a saxophone. Anarchy indeed. Get a job and get out of my way.

I completely understand what you mean, but if you look at other Human Rights issues like Zimbabwe or Sierra Leone they never got anywhere near the media coverage that this is getting. It is not just people jumping on bandwagons, it's that the Human Rights issue has been highlighted at a time when China are under close scrutiny. It's inevitable that people will respond to that. That said a whole lot of people don't understand the issue. I really don't care who owns Tibet, but they should be free to practise their own religion and their freedom should be respected in the same way that capitalism is in Hong Kong.
Babylon Posted 7 April 2008 Posted 7 April 2008 but if you look at other Human Rights issues like Zimbabwe or Sierra Leone they never got anywhere near the media coverage that this is getting. Exactly my point, people are just reacting to what the press tell them is a worthy cause. They probably haven't got the first idea what they are even protesting against. They see the fact they have been there like some kind of scouts merit badge. If people were really that bothered about others human rights then they would have said/done something about Zimbabwe or Sierra Leone as you say. Many have, and fare play to them... it's just the people who tag along to make themselves feel better, or to just have a bit of a ruck that I'm having a pop at.. ie the band wagon jumpers.

I have to agree, other freedom movements having been going along in parellel, the fact the government and the media have backed this movement as politically china is an adversary to the US and hence it's seen as a bogeyman, has given those that want to protest the green light. But other nations such as India (Kasmir, Punjab, Akshay Chin, Himalya Pradesh, Orrisa, Tamil Nadu) and Turkey (Kurds) who are key allies are subsequently forgotten by the press and the governments, those freedom movements offer no political leeway or wealth, hence have no value!!!
