I'm also doing the GNR and Leicester Marathon this year.

Got my GNR race pack today. Zone B - front of the pack again, just behind the celebs and elite's.

Are you staying in Newcastle?

How are your long runs going Andy? I'm aiming for about 3:30 too at Leicester, my long runs have been comfortable at 8:45 pace (longest so far is 15m), to get 3:30 is pretty much 8min/miles all the way, so I'd say if you are fine doing long runs about 8:45-9 then you should be ok to speed up 1min/mile on the day.

Re: running on an empty stomach,

I don't know much techie stuff unlike Andy who is trained for all this, but I will say techie aside, from personal experience:

- Do NOT train on an empty stomach, glycogen etc. aside you will have no energy and your workout will be lacklustre and rubbish. This means you will probably not train as hard or as long as you would with some energy inside of you. You will probably hate it more as well as it's so much harder and be less likely to train again.

- Make sure you have some energy before you train, get some good recovery fuel down you ASAP after you finish and it means you can train much harder and longer, and recover more quickly, and enjoy it more. Long term - you will be MUCH better off.

Re: burning fat without running loads.

- Don't bother with long slow runs, they are boring and not actually very effective for losing weight.

Again I don't know the science, but do:

1) Hill sprints (just run up the steepest hill you can find as quick as you can, then jog down, then repeat as many times as you can. You will probably feel like vomiting or actually vomit doing this properly).

2) And/or interval training (just run as quick as you can for say 30/60 secs), then walk for 60 secs, jog for 30 secs and then repeat this 10-15 times (again vomiting can occur!).

This burns fat brilliantly as you will be burning it for a long time after you stop. It will also make you much fitter and let you do a harder work out next time, which will make you burn more fat etc. etc.

They're okay - I don't have a pace watch which is a bit annoying so can only guess the times - at the minute my longest long run has been the 10 miler which was 1h17m. I'm doing 13 miles this week and the increasing as the weeks go on.

Today was hard - I did 8 miles fartlek in 1h02m - then did a 4 mile recovery run on the treaddy in the gym - only 10 kmh it was easy going but tonight - Jesus H Christ. I went for a speed session with the Leicester Coritanians - 6 lots of 300m sprints. I think my calves are going to explode. That said it was absolutely brilliant to actually train with other people for once!

I think 3:30 is probably just a little bit out of reach for the Leicester Marathon - that said, it is a big goal so I'm going to leave my target as it is as long I I don't suffer any injuries - just sorted myself a new pair of trainers as my 2160s are falling apart. I've cgraduated up to 2170s and these ones are in the right colour.... Blue, unlike the old ones which were fvcking red.

Not got my race pack yet so don't know where I'm starting from - I'm staying at the Uni halls about 5 mins from the start line - stayed there last year and whilst it's VERY basic - you can't beat it because 1) it's bloody cheap and 2) the atmosphere is amazing. They put on an amazing (free) breakfast in the morning which is terrible because I can't take full advantage of it! But it's there if you have any amply/friends with you. It's called Castle Leazes if you haven't booked yet - I MIGHT have a spare room going, but not sure yet, depends if one of my mates pulls out.

Been running a fair bit recent;y, and finally attempted my 7.5 mile run for the second time. I did it in 1 hour 19 - not great, but then again I am awful at running; I'm under 5ft 11 and weigh about 13 and a half stone, so I don't think I'm particularly built for running - it tends to give me really sore shins.

That being said, I improved on my previous time by about 8 minutes, so I'm quite happy with it! Doesn't help that I run with my ethiopian-build brother......

You don't have to be great to start. But you do have to start to be great.

Running on an empty stomach - my thoughts.

Again, it depends on what works best for you. Some people need to have the fuel nearer to running times, others don't. If I eat before running, I feel sluggish and slow, but if I run on an empty stomach, I'm fine. My theory is that as long as I get the calories in some time before, they'll be there during the run. The OH is different, but as I posted before, he is bigger than me.

I'm guessing that as I'm smaller, I can get away with it. This is based on the fact the OH needs to eat after running a lot sooner than I do.

What I would say is that even if you do eat, you shouldn't eat a full meal minutes before running!

I'm staying in a hotel in Whitley Bay (have done for the past 2 GNR's). Right on the 'beach' and close to the train station. Got 1 hour 28 last time, I've not got the core training in this time around so doubt I'll beat that, but will certainly be looking to get under 1 hour 30.

Probably ran in about 20 half marathon events now. Leicester will be my first marathon. Main aim is to finish(!), under 3:45 would be good, around 3:30 would be great.

Just ran 13 miles (didn't time it) fvcking me it's hot out there - I've been stuck in the gym all day and hadn't actually seen any sunlight so the heat was a shock

13 miles in this heat - that's impressive. I had to stop just shy of 3 miles as I couldn't take it anymore.

I could only manage 5K. :(

I did 16 miles before the footie yesterday and ended up having to go down into the concourse for 10 minutes during the first half. Suddenly started sweating incredibly and feeling dizzy. Practically had to beg the bastards at the kiosks to give me some water. I've ran in conditions worse than that before (and with less water) so not sure what went wrong!

The human body is a strange thing in the waysnit works sometimes!

Funny you should say that about the kiosks, I was thinking on my run home that if I had to stop at a petrol station or pub etc and asked to use a phone to call for a lift the answer would most likely be no. However if this was 15 years ago I suspect it would be yes. How attitudes have changes and people are so suspicios these days.

Just been out for a run again this evening and, surprise surprise, suffered my usual Achilles twinges.

Are there a best pair of running shoes for this problem? I've heard about some 'gel' heels or something?

Differing opinions on this, read back a couple of pages for a bit of discussion on this very subject.

In the mean time, try some exercises to strengthen your lower leg/foot muscles - might help in the long term!

Just out of interest pal, were you in K Block? Hope your feeling better now mate!

Did my first run since coming back off holiday today (2 weeks ago), managed 6 mile which I was fairly happy at, defiantly slower than usual though.

Started running around 3 months ago to try and shift some weight (almost 3 stone lighter now!) and at first I thought I would hate it...and I did. But then after about 3 weeks I really started to enjoy it and I'm sort of addicted to it lol.

Running shoes aren't a magic fix for poor form...

Having my first rest day in today after 4 solid running, and yesterdays tough weight session. Need the rest feel like my body is cooked atm.

Hey all thinking about getting some new running shoes over the next couple of days. Any recommendations? Normally like to stick with Asics as they are pretty durable.

Answered your own question there mate! If you like asics and they don't give you blisters or injury then there you go!

Ended up getting a pair of these

Got specifically tested and measured which narrowed it down to 4 pairs and the Brooks were the best feel. Althougth the Adidas pair looked amazing.

So I started running again AROUND June/July time after a long time of laziness. I've got a half MARATHON in 5 weeks followed by the Silverstone half in March and either London/Paris/Milan marathon in April depending on the success of my London marathon application. My housemate's (who I've know for nearly 7 years) dad died 5 years ago and he would have been 60 this year so we're doing five races to add up to 60 miles (I've got a couple of 10k races thrown in for good measure).

Anyway, enough of my X Factor style sob story, let's get onto the running. I'm hoping to do my Hal in under 1hr 50m, and did a 10m run on Sunday at 1hr 23m which has helped me BELIEVE. I've done one half before in 1hr 56m with minimal training but that was in 2007 and I had 4 and a half years less smoking in me (something I've now quit). Let's see how this goes.

Oh, and I have a 10k on Sunday. I almost forgot. If any of you London foxes are hanging around Regent's Park then you might see me.
