In Praise of Sean O'Driscoll

SOD takes Donny up with a good passing team, tactical nous and the use of some excellent subsititutions. He did the same with Bournemouth taking them out of Division 3 with a thumping 5-2 defeat of Lincoln in Cardiff.

In praise of Sean O'Driscoll - I rest my case.

But 14k at The Keepmoat versus 32k at The Walkers?

Still time to get in there Mandy.

O'Driscoll's very impressive. Something of a thinking man's manager. Good job he got promotion. I couldn't imagine him fitting in here. :D

Yeah, he has more intelligence than some folk are comfortable with.

Sheehans a left back not a forward, i thought leeds left back today had a decent game, we should sign douglas, and O'Driscal wont come now

In my team left-backs become forwards when we've got the ball.

They don't get many chances in a game but when they do it's vital to have someone with the skill to put them on target instead of high and wide as happened today.

Not only that, but Sheehan would have whipped in far better dead ball kicks than anything Leeds managed today and he would have supported high up the field more often.

Try and think of a real Leeds chance today. There really weren't many.

Doncaster on the other hand might have scored with any number of attacks, being foiled at least three times by the Leeds keeper.

Donnie did play brilliantly and Leeds were poor, but Thrac, did you notice their striker coming back and defending? How dare he! :P

It was notable today how both the Donny full-backs bombed forward at every opportunity and created more attacking options.

Such a tactic is not rocket science, whatever our recent managers would have us believe..

If this Sheehan debate goes on any longer I'll be splitting the lot out and binning it. Please don't make me do that.

do it, please

just change the thread title to In praise of Sean O'Sheehan

Doncaster were superb today, and O'Driscoll has got them playing attacking, attractive football. They nearly overwhelmed Leeds in the opening 20 minutes, and over the course of the season, I think they deserve to go up.

It must be a joy to watch them every week.

JayJay was an inspiration. Heskey used to do the same for City. I'm not against attackers defending. I just believe it should work both ways and that care should be taken that strikers/wingers don't burn so much energy chasing people they've got nothing left for their "daytime" job.

Doncaster do play some decent stuff but how many goals do they score? Hayter is their top scorer and it was his 11th today.

Seventy-five goals and seven or eight reasonable contributors from all over the pitch.

It was always known Leicester would need 75 goals to do any good and the point was made in July/August last year. We barely got halfway and it was always obvious that would be the case.

Every time I explained how important it was to get goals from different positions we got people saying so-and-so's not a striker, he's a defender or a defensive midfielder.

People we used like Clapham, Mattock, Oakley, N'Gotty, James Chambers, Newton, Laczko, Bori, Cort, Etuhu and even Wesolowski were never likely to score goals or make them with any consistency.

Positive players were left in the cold.

Let's hope our new manager has more sense.

I find it totally unrealistic that you have the audacity to use left backs, defenders and right backs in a list of players never likely to score goals!!

you take one quick look at the 2 teams that finished in the top 2 positions in the premier league and you will see that the players who play at the back for them simply don't score goals!!

Ashley Cole Chelsea left back 50 league games 1 goal

Patrice Evra Man Utd left back 97 games 2 goals

that's the left backs of the top 2 teams scoring an average of 1 goal every 50 games!!!

Wes Brown has made 304 appearances for Man Utd and scored 3 goals!!

John Terry 237 appearances 16 goals that breaks down as about 2 goals a season.

I am sure you live in a fantasy land somewhere in the 1970's

Thracian, if we played the right football with people moving and covering all over the pitch, I'm sure some (not all, but some) of those players are no less capable of slotting a few away than much of Doncaster's squad. It's the style of play that's meant its not happened, not necessarily the players.

Evra is a tireless supporting full-back who's forever getting on the edge of the opposition box. Once he does that he can take part in moves that lead to goals or help provide more space for the specialists to score.

Why do you think Sir Alex Ferguson so loved Gary Neville at right-back? It was for the terrific support and passing outlets he provided for Beckham and the endless times he got into position to deliver balls into the box.

Even Wes Brown is improving in that department as he gains confidence and experience. You don't see him sitting back behind the halfway line when attacks are developing.

John Terry is a constant threat for Chelsea particularly with any dead ball situation, not just because he's always likely to get a header on or near the target but because of the people it takes to mark him.

I might have done my management in the 70's but having also watched countless matches in the modern era and training sessions I'm well aware of modern methods and systems of play.

Indeed, if you watched more you'd see exactly what the best defenders do once their team has the ball.

If it's me that's such a fantasist, how come City have gone their own way and performed so badly?

When Doncaster got forward they were like Manchester United in the numbers of people they had around in support.

We rarely do that.

You can speculate about why as much as you like.

But it has to change.

You should get into politics, you'd do well. They love selective quotes in politics.

Holidays are good, perks are good... :D

My first act of parliament would be to ban Alan Sheehan.
