Bert Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 MEXICO! Link. Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed as the new coach of Mexico."It's unanimous. Eriksson has been accepted," said Guadalajara president and member of the Mexican federation's executive committee Jorge Vergara. Sacked as manager of Manchester City on Monday, the 60-year-old former England coach has agreed a two-year deal. "Mexico is a big job," said Eriksson. "To help Mexico reach the World Cup is a big challenge. You have 120 million people and it's motivating." The decision to name Eriksson as Hugo Sanchez's successor was taken at a meeting of the 18 owners of the country's first division. Eriksson was the only serious contender for the Mexico job, which has been vacant since Sanchez left in March. The Swede spent five-and-a-half years in charge of England, from January 2001 until July 2006, taking them to two World Cup quarter-finals. Mexico are looking for a manager to take them to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. Eriksson will not officially take up his post until 21 June, when Mexico host Belize Monterrey in the second leg of the second round of World Cup qualifiers. Until then caretaker coach Jesus Ramirez will remain in temporary charge for the matches against Argentina on 4 June, Peru on 8 June and the first leg with Belize in Houston on 15 June. Eriksson is Mexico's first foreign coach since Serbian Bora Milutinovic, who resigned in 1997 from his second stint in charge of the team. Apart from Milutinovic, Mexico has had two Spaniards, two Hungarians and an Englishman as coaches. Eriksson's season-long stint at City was officially brought to an end on Monday by the club's owner Thaksin Shinawatra, following weeks of speculation. BBC Sport revealed in April that Eriksson was no longer wanted by owner Thaksin, despite City finishing ninth in the Premiership .
lildave3 Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 What's going on with the Sun lately? Everything they seem to say is gonna happen, happens.
Benjani Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 Only got a 2 year deal aswell. If he doesn't get them qualified for the 2010 World Cup he is out of another job. Not a bad CV eh? Teams managed Degerfors IF IFK Göteborg SL Benfica AS Roma AC Fiorentina SL Benfica U.C. Sampdoria S.S. Lazio England Manchester City Mexico
Benjani Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 In fact im sure he was badly treated by us English fans aswell as Thaksin. I mean looking on Wiki, he lost 10 games out of 67 while boss of England. With a 59.70 win ration

Finnegan Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 I think that's a pretty terrible move by both himself and Mexico. Surely if he's learned one thing over the last ten years, it's that he's far better at a domestic level.
Ric Flair Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 Sven Goran Eriksson is a very good manager, what on earth is he doing going there? I hope we get a friendly against them, will be the dullest game ever given Eriksson's record in friendlies and England's before, during and after his tenure with us.
C-man Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 Good for Mexico. They'll get to World Cup 2010 and get to the quarters then lose to Portugal on penalties after Wayne Roodriguez is sent off.

Benjani Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 Mexico arn't that bad, they are 14th in the World rankings. You will be surprised at how good they are when you watch them play. Have some very good technical players.
Uncle Albert Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 It was the games he lost, not won, that defined his career in England. He didnt lose many competitive games as manager. Brazil - 2002 World Cup France - Euro 2004 Portugal - Euro 2004 (Penalties) Northern Ireland - World Cup 2006 qualifier Portugal - World Cup 2006 (Penalties) So he only lost 3 competitive games in 90 minutes in the space of 5 years as England manager. Not bad.

You will be surprised at how good they are when you watch them play.Have some very good technical players. To be fair, that ranking is largely based on the fact that world cup qualification for them consists of playing the equivalent of Andorra virtually every fixture. I don't doubt Mexico are half-decent but the qualification they have to do is farcical.
Joe. Not bad. Yeah but how many big, competetive games did he win? Not many at all.
Uncle Albert Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 Yeah but how many big, competetive games did he win? Not many at all. I know yea, but you can only beat who is front of you and the teams we lost to with the exception of N. Ireland were dectent teams. And he smashed Germany 5-1 and beat the Argentines in 2002.
Corky Posted 4 June 2008 Posted 4 June 2008 I never thought he was that bad for England, the only thing wrong was he persevered with Beckham for too long through many poor performances and not using friendlies properly. He'll do well for Mexico in my opinion.
Tilley Posted 5 June 2008 Posted 5 June 2008 Strange if you ask me, It's obvious he is a better club manager, Ah well, good luck to him
purpleronnie Posted 5 June 2008 Posted 5 June 2008 Yeah but how many big, competetive games did he win? Not many at all. Plus he made some poor substitutions and tactical changes which almost always made things worse.
Tevez Posted 5 June 2008 Posted 5 June 2008 Plus he made some poor substitutions and tactical changes which almost always made things worse. Evidence? What changes in which big games?
TrickyTrev Posted 7 June 2008 Posted 7 June 2008 He was a competent England Manager who with a bit more luck would have got us to a couple of semi-finals. Our best chance was at 04 where we looked the best side in the tournament but when Rooney got injured the lack of strength in depth up front was exposed. In 06 we would have been a good side but Rooney and Owen got injured in the lead up to the tournament, again our lack of strength in depth in this position was exposed. Thought he should have picked Defoe for the tournament bearing in mind Owen and Rooney's fitness but we were a penalty shoot out away from a world cup semi-final... In 02 we greatly over performed with a mediocre side. Trevor Sinclair, Nicky Butt, Danny Mills and Emile Heskey were in the side for gawds sake! David Beckham was about 10% fit and we lost Gerrard on the eve of the tournament. We did well to get out of the group. If it wasn't for his blatant contempt for friendly internationals and the sex scandals he would be remembered a lot more fondly. Mexico, always gonna qualify, invariably seem to get seeded so get out of their world cup group, never gonna win anything. I imagine they offered him a lot of mollah and in his old age he fancied the beach. Or maybe the Spring break revellers in Tiawana.
Jordan Posted 7 June 2008 Posted 7 June 2008 If Sven thought the English media was harsh on him, he ain't seen nothin' yet. All it'll take is one loss in World Cup qualifying (especially to the USA) for them to be calling for his head.
Fox You Forest Posted 7 June 2008 Posted 7 June 2008 He must be absolutely loaded. More money than sense.
