Russia & Belarus players being allowed to play at Wimbledon this year which is quite a remarkable u-turn given the fact that a ban was deemed appropriate last year.

What has changed  - the murder of thousands of innocent people, that's all.

Probably pressure from outside sponsors and maybe the government or taking a similar approach to other sports?

It's not the players fault for the war in Ukraine, as long as its under a neutral position I don't see any problems with it.

The LTA  and All England club were fined by various tennis organisations and ranking points taken away for their stance last year which I suspect didn't go down well and Wimbledon didn't want to suffer the same issues.

Seems there was a threat to expel the LTA too.

Was the wrong decision last year, they made the right one to over turn it. If a player comes out in support of the war then ban them, but not a blanket ban on individual sports stars. They aren't representing the nation they are representing themselves. I'm happy to ban Russian and Belarusian teams from competing, as they represent the nation, the Russian Football team competes on behalf of Russia, but individual players don't. Daniil Medvedev represents Daniil Medvedev, he only represents Russian in the Davis Cup and Olympics, so ban them from those.

I think they are although the IOC might let them compete as “neutrals” in Paris .

You're probably right, it was just a point that teams represent the nation not the individual. Medvedev would be part of a Russian Olympic team if they were allowed to compete, he's not part of the Russian team at Wimbledon.

Raducanu to miss the French open and Wimbledon after surgery.

I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling her name could crop up in a pub quiz in a few years time

Gutting for her, but some forced time off to get the body fully recovered will be good for her.

Even of the US Open is all she ever does, she's still achieved more that any British female tennis player has for over 40 years. Fair play to her. I have a feeling she'll find her feet eventually.

Good success  to win on clay .

First challenger title for 18 years .

No ordinary player - takes two 1st round defeats and deals with them in the most constructive way possible, and gains vital ranking points in the process.

Nah. She worked so hard alongside her studies to be able to compete like she did once her A-levels were finished, and look what happened. She is someone who is prepared to put the hard work, even when not out playing on the tour, and I am confident she will use this as a reset and will bounce back.

Nadal out of the French. At his age and the persistent injury surely he won't be playing much longer.

Sounds like 2024 will be his last season with the Olympics on clay in Paris .

On the topic of Olympic tennis, I do find it rather amusing that Andy Murray has more gold medals than Federer, Nadal and Djokovic put together and he's only ever lost one Olympic match - to a guy from Taiwan, Yen Hsun Lu.

Andy’s record outside of the slams is impressive (and of course getting three slams is pretty decent!). Two x Olympic golds + one silver, Davis cup, a load of Masters titles and eventually he got himself to world number one. It’s just unfortunate he’s playing in an era where that can come across as a bit ordinary!

First time there are no British ladies in the draw for a grand slam since 2009!

In the meantime Emma Raducanu is living her best life getting to enjoy time with friends following her surgery. I think it will do her the world of good.

Yes guess so but not sure if his Aussie opponent did either tbh .

Poor show from the French crowd unaware of what was going on ?

Not sure individual athletes should be held responsible for their governments actions. Has she come out and backed the war? Would people be happy with British sports people being disrespected based on the actions of the government?

When it comes to representing the country as part of team, I'm totally on board with banning them, booing them, not shaking hands, but not individually.

Exactly. It’s not Davis cup/Fed cup etc - they are representing themselves.

Good points and sure her opponent hasn't endorsed the war in Ukraine.

Once is maybe fair to make her feelings known but get on with it after that.
