Ozwin Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 I was just wondering if any of you have any routines which would help me tone up a bit. I've found one online which apparently is pretty good but if there are any which you guys have used and have had results with then I'd be up for checking them out too. Thanks.
AoWW Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 TommyG does, I believe. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to give you some advice.
DBEightyFive Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 Get yourself a copy of Mens Health magazine or the Mens Health Website.

Lovejoy Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 A 2 mile run 3 times a week is as far as I go. I should really start working out properly, but I just can't be bothered.
Katy Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 I have a couple of little ones which are helping to eliminate the old bingo wings
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 When you say tone up do you mean lose weight or gain muscle? I do about an hours weights / press ups / sit ups in the morning, followed by the same before I go to bed. The key is not to overdo it otherwise you'll grow tired of it.
Ozwin Posted 5 July 2008 Author Posted 5 July 2008 I'm a skinny git, I want to add a few pounds of muscle. I've got the weight training routine down I just need to work out the foods to eat and stuff. It's just all these proteiny foods seem really dull and unappetising.

I've got the weight training routine down I just need to work out the foods to eat and stuff. It's just all these proteiny foods seem really dull and unappetising. I just eat whatever, but try to avoid too much sugar. I don't let it resrict my life though, I still drink Coke etc. It's better in the long run to actually have excessive fat in a diet than excessive sugar. Also, try to steer clear of white foods (pasta, bread, rice). There are plenty of wholemeal alternatives that are better for you.
Ozwin Posted 5 July 2008 Author Posted 5 July 2008 I was told pasta is what I should be eating along with lot of oats, pasta, wheat bread, yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, etc. I'm not touching cottage cheese to save my life but the rest I can live with. Any other suggestions? This bit I always get stuck on, are there any luxury foods that I'd enjoy eating? Like dohnuts...yeah dohnuts... or something?
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 5 July 2008 Posted 5 July 2008 Oily fish is good for you, as are, as you say, oats. I don't really eat anything specific, just watch portions and you'll be alright.
Ozwin Posted 5 July 2008 Author Posted 5 July 2008 I'm just going to carry on eating like I have been the past few days. I've just been throwing it down. Come monday the routine comes into action. I need to get a barbell though by then but I don't want to get to Argos and not be able to carry the weights off the table with me. >_> That'd be highly embarassing.

Ozwin Posted 6 July 2008 Author Posted 6 July 2008 There's a 25KG set for £24.99 which will do me just fine. I have some dumbells (That's their name I think) already but I'm moving up in the world.

Samilktray Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 Yes. Without school or a job i don't have a lot else to do. Its fooking boring though.
Durnerz Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 I use weights for toning mainly as I have a job in which im lifting heavy stuff all the time and moving around a lot so I dont overwork my muscles. Mainly I do 15 reps of 8 dumbell/barbell exercises every couple of days.

You need protein and to eat about every two hours to gain weight, Chicken, Pasta, that kinda thing get into the routine little and often! If your at work take chicken snacks you can nibble on every two hours, then do an hour work out at night.
purpleronnie Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 I used to be able to get into my local gym for free (about 15 years ago), I used to go every day. I was sooo skinny never could put weight on, but after a about a year my sister said 'Look at your arms, you look like popeye' and soon after that my Mum said I had a neck like Mike Tyson...I decided to quit. And that muscle turned into fat so I ended up doing aerobic exercises, much healthier.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 If you're looking to build muscle bulk, you need to do heavier weights and fewer reps than if you're just looking to tone up
Darkzzz_ Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 I like to keep myself fit, i personally don't do any weight training, i do a lot of Cardiovascular work. I keep myself fit by running every night on my treadmill, i make sure i do my stretching exercises before and after any workout. I eat normally still like most people but i have started adding some important protein foods to my diet. I suppose its just all about the individual, good luck with your training. Just don't go to extreme and become obssessed.
purpleronnie Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 Its weird I was in the gym every day but the more muscle I put on the least healthy I became. You see all those big body builders on tv, they struggle to walk without breathing heavy.
Jordan Posted 6 July 2008 Posted 6 July 2008 Don't: 1) Use the word "tone," it means nothing! If you want to get more ripped, you've got to build muscle and lose fat. Also, you can't just spot-tone a single body part--you've got to get ripped all over if you want shredded arms, six-pack abs or anything else. Do you want to build muscle mass, do you just want to lose weight, or both? 2) Don't waste your money on a Men's Health subscription. It's full of advertising and it's got way too much info (some of it contradictory) in every issue. If you're looking for ideas on a workout program and you read a MH issue from front to back looking for one, your head will spin. You can get better advice on exercise, sex/relationships, style etc. elsewhere (and usually for free). Do 1) Use the internet for resources on the basics. This is the best, most comprehensive free site I've found so far. It's a little cheesy and the videos are a little campy, but that guy tells you everything you need to know to get started working out (especially if you're lifting at home with no spotter). 2) Use light weights for a while. By using light weights, you will learn proper form and you'll still get a good workout. Also, you definitely don't want to injure yourself, so don't go beyond your strength. I'm 5'10" and 163 lbs. and I've been training with light weights for about a month and a half. I only work out my muscle groups once per week (abs every day or every three days) and I want to build up strength. I've got 70 lbs. of weights that can be divided between two dumbbells, and that's been fine so far. 3) Get or find a bar for pull-ups and chin-ups. Those are great exercises, and I'm doing myself a disservice every day I don't have a bar! 4) Cardio! Running, biking, football, etc. Very important! Lower yr body fat while you're building muscle (which in turn lowers body fat), a great combination to help get ripped. Aerobic exercise is great for your health.
