Clem Update

Posted on: Tue 16 Sep 2008

Club Captain Stephen Clemence has reluctantly refused to set any targets as he battles back to full fitness.

The 30-year-old midfielder has not played for the Foxes since March after limping out of the action after only 10 minutes of the 1-0 victory over S****horpe United.

Clemence immediately underwent an operation on an on-going Achilles/ankle injury and set his sights on a return to action during pre-season.

However, complications with the injury have since arisen and as a result he is still some way off a first-team comeback.

Clemence said: "I had my operation at the start of April and personally expected to be back in time for the start of pre-season training.

"I worked very hard with the physios and the club doctor during the close season in an attempt to get myself right for when all the boys reported back.

"Unfortunately that didn't happen due to an on-going problem with the heel area of my foot."

In an effort to cure the injury once and for all, Clemence is now undergoing a new course of treatment aimed at strengthening the bones around the foot.

He added: "It's been a very frustrating period on the sidelines for me and I've now seen three different specialists who have all told me to rest.

"That's what I've been doing but the injury still isn't right so that's why I've gone down this new route to see if the drug makes a difference.

"If it doesn't then it could mean more surgery but I'm not looking that far down the line at the moment.

"But that's why I can't set a date as to when I'll be back playing."

Clemence made 34 appearances last term following his move from Birmingham City, but could not prevent the Foxes dropping down to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

"I came here with a lot of expectation on my shoulders having done well for Birmingham for the previous season.

"However, I'll hold my hands up and say that for one reason and another I didn't play well enough.

"Okay, I suffered quite a few injuries but I'm not going to use those as an excuse.

"But now the only way to put that disappointment behind me is to get back on the football pitches and start putting right what went wrong last term."

Clemence has also praised manager Nigel Pearson, who has supported the former England Under-21 international every step of the way.

"The manager has been great with me," he said. "Of course he wants to see me back on the training pitches but understands that my injury is a complicated one.

"I am not going to return unless I'm 100 per cent right because I've done that in the past and that has not really helped anyone."

In the meantime, the Liverpool-born midfielder will continue to follow to follow the Foxes from the stands.

"After last season's relegation we are not in the division we'd like to be in but the lads have got on with the job in hand and there is a great spirit amongst the squad.

"We are winning football matches which is the most important thing and the future does look bright.

"The players are thoroughly enjoying playing under the new gaffer."

That's a bit ambitious to say. If you looked at goals and assists from both players in the first team here it would suggest that Clemence is the more creative of the two.

I rate Clemence, I rate Oakley and I think King has the potential. I just don't know who is best suited to play with who.

There's probably not a lot in it creatively as I am sure would be demonstrated if King clocked up a similar number of games and wasn't sometimes utilised more in a defensive capacity, which, of course, is one of the reasons he's in the team.

And King, when used as an attacker, clocks up an unusually high number of shots.

Furthermore he seems much more durable than Clemence as you would expect at the different stages of their career. Clemence has had injury problems almost continually since he joined us.

Both are more attack-minded than either Oakley or Wesolowski but I think the current combination of Oakley/King works well enough and would be interested to see how King/Wesolowski or King/Porter worked as well. Playing two essentially defensive midfielders like Oakley/Wesolowski would seem to be the least positive option.

Clemence doesn't sound like he'll be an option for months to come, if at all.

I think he could still offer something. With a more attacking approach and actually playing with wingers, it may give Clemence the chance to spread the ball wide, which is what he likes to do.

Clemence can't be any worse than Oakley at the minute.

I think Oakley's done alright. He didn't play well on Saturday, but who did?

Clemence and Oakley together will tear this League apart.

Oakley has played well this season and wasnt as bad as people made out he was on Saturday.

Hurry up Clem.

At a guess I'd imagine you've never had Achilles tendon trouble. And if Clemence has got complications on top then I don't think there's any chance of him "hurrying up" or any sense in it either.

Comments like this are nothing short of ****ing stupid: Aside from Saturday he's had a great season so far - the turnaround in his play has impressed me no end.

Making sweeping statements from one single match isn't the cleverest thing to do.

New season, new league, new start hopefully. The likes of Matty Fryatt, Steve Howard and Matt Oakley have turned it around this season, why shouldn't Clemence? I hope he does. I was talking to someone I know who is a Birmingham fan, and he couldn't beleive what I was saying about him last year. He should have the preformances in him, and at the moment it appears we have a manager to get form out of players.

Why let him back in? He was my main culprit for why we were relegated last year! No leadership, no dominance in midfield - absolutely nothing he offered, just like another man for the other team. Why let him back in when Oakley and King have been playing well together and in a mainly winning side.

Bang on sunshine.

When he's fit again he should be given his chance, he might do well in this league. But if he proves to be as useless as he was (on occasions) last season we might as well flog him!

Coupled with the fact that he's got a serious injury I'd say Clemence would have no chance of completing 15 minutes at Senior League standard anytime soon let alone a full game at the generic 6.75 to 7.00 out of 10 I'd say Oakley's managed in Division One so far.

The way they're talking there seems no certainly that his first team career will even be able to continue although obviously I hope that's not the case.

Thracian, I'm giving you special dispensation to cross the great divide over in to my domain (GENERAL CHAT).

The EMA thread is a bit flat and could use some of your unique brand of controversy, hyperbole and plain rubbish.

As it's your domain I can't see why they should be lacking any of those things.:)

I welcome Clemence back. He just adds more quality to our already quality squad. And it gives us more option in the midfield. And more competition.

Strength in depth is fantastic, and imagine having Kisnorbo and Clemence on the bench, when both of them are easily Championship players.

Is that what it is? I've not being paying attention.

I had that once and it cleared up entirely on its own, even after I'd knackered it by taking codine to play a volleyball match on it. Miraculous. I went from limping to hassle-free in two days after 6-8 weeks of discomfort.

Be there right after I've had this cuppa, boss.

Limpalong Clemence and Passaway Patrick - I can't wait.
