Jimmy Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Source The Gloucestershire Echo and thisisgloucestershire.co.uk can exclusively reveal that Martin Allen will be unveiled as the new manager of Cheltenham Town FC at a press conference on Monday morning. He will replace Keith Downing, who left by mutual consent following a poor start to the new season that has seen the Robins slump to five defeats in their opening six League One matches. Reading-born Allen has previously managed Barnet, Brentford, MK Dons and most recently Leicester City, who he left in August 2007 after just three months in charge During his playing days, he was a combative midfielder for QPR, West Ham, Portsmouth and West Ham. His father, Dennis Allen managed the Robins between 1974 and 1979 and Martin used to watch the club as a small boy. Click here! Nicknamed 'Mad Dog', Allen's cousins, Paul, Bradley and Clive Allen all enjoyed successful professional careers in football. Allen was linked with the job when John Ward left last October, but the job was given to previous assistant manager Downing. He was seen in the directors' box at the Robins' home clash with Huddersfield Town last Saturday. The 43-year-old becomes the sixth man to take the Robins' managerial reins in the Football League, following Steve Cotterill, Graham Allner, Bobby Gould, John Ward and Downing. His first match in charge will be the derby clash with Bristol Rovers at Whaddon Road on Tuesday evening. * For the full story and in-depth coverage of Downing's departure including reaction from the players and fans, see Monday's Gloucestershire Echo and thisisgloucestershire.co.uk.
Matt Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Well Done Martin, Good Luck, Hope you do well. I don't think many will agree, I'm not sure.
Tilley Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Nice task for him. They have looked doomed already, on last few results. Hopefully he can keep them up, good luck to him.
Corky Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 He has got his work cut out. Their defence is abysmal.
Joe. Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Good luck to him, but he's got one hell of a job keeping them up.
dandannieldanok Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 I don't think many will agree. I'll be the first to disagree, the bloke was far to up his own ar*e for my liking.
Samilktray Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Good luck to the bloke. Always liked him.
Jimmy Posted 13 September 2008 Author Posted 13 September 2008 what are the odds on him at least trying to sign DJ Campbell for a 3rd time
Samilktray Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 I'll be the first to disagree, the bloke was far to up his own ar*e for my liking. Thank god the world isnt full of boring characters then.
Flynny Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 I love how everyone was outraged when he left and seems to have since decided he was shit based on nothing whatsoever. We'd not have gone down if he'd had the full season, I'm almost certain of that.
Maybes Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 I love how everyone was outraged when he left and seems to have since decided he was shit based on nothing whatsoever. We'd not have gone down if he'd had the full season, I'm almost certain of that. C'mon son. We are in league one...get over it.
Benji Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Good luck but I think it will end in failure. The 2nd time in one day I find myself agreeing with you, I would suggest giving opinions more often. Wenger could manage that side and still get them relegated, there is only so much they can do as a manager.
Stevosevic Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Didn't like him, he remined me of a sunday league manager, very amateur. He made some awful signings, Cort, Newton, Hayes, Campbell, etc... it's frightening. I believe his poor organisation and preparation was one of the factors to our relegation. Hope they go down.
MC Prussian Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Wonder what the atmosphere will be when Cheltenham come to the Walkers in the second half of this season...
syston_fox Posted 13 September 2008 Posted 13 September 2008 Wonder what the atmosphere will be when Cheltenham come to the Walkers in the second half of this season... Cant see him getting any stick to be honest. For one he wasn't here long enough and two we wernt in that bad a position when he left.
The Stig Posted 14 September 2008 Posted 14 September 2008 I still don't have an opinion on him as a manager as he simply didn't stay long enough. But according to popular rumour, it was the right decsision for him to go. I however, again, can't possible say I know enough about it to have an opinion. That said he seemed a likeable manager, so I wish him luck.
Tilley Posted 14 September 2008 Posted 14 September 2008 If Cheltenham only concede 3 next week, then they have made progress.
Flynny Posted 15 September 2008 Posted 15 September 2008 Certainly going to be a awkward phone-call if Allen wants to extend Hayles' loan.
markbsac Posted 15 September 2008 Posted 15 September 2008 Good luck to the chap he will always be welcome back at the walkers as long as its not beating us with cheltenham ...but they will prob go down so i cant see that happening again.........
