Salieri Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 Another cracking result again and am loving the fact we have a settled team at the moment, one that pretty much picks itself. Obviously 3 of the starting 11 are only on loan and it got me wondering about the possibilty of signing one or all of the above on a permanent deal. Working on the assumption that we are heading back to the Championship ( ) which would of course make us a more attractive option, could we or should we try to sign any of them? Personally i think, given the chance, we should definitely try for Hobbs and Gilbert, i think the juries still out on Martin. Unfortunately though, out of the 3, he's probably the one we'd have the most chance in signing. Thoughts?
Joe. Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 I reckon we could have Kerrea in the bag if we got promoted. I think there's no chance whatsoever of Hobbs, Liverpool will want him back for sure, and I just don't think we'll pursue Martin. So yeah, I think we'll eventually get Gilbert.

I would love to have both of them at Leicester but unfortunetly cant see it happening. Martin is a quality goalkeeper and Hobbs is a class act in defence for me. Yes Martin may not have shown it but Pearson wouldnt still play him if he didnt think he was top quality. I really want to sign Gilbert permanently, brilliant right back and looks a lot better footballer than Stearman last season. Get's forward and has a lot of pace, big and strong.
Asha Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 Gilbert for sure, Hobbs we could try but won't get. IF we do get promoted, we'd need a better keeper in the championship, so forget Martin. Adequate for this level, but not championship.
SamL Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 At certain times, I've been pretty impressed with all 3 of them. They're all a little inconsistent, but that's to be expected at times due to their age. Personally, I think there's no chance of us signing Hobbs as he's valued highly at Liverpool. We could maybe get him on loan for another season at best. I think we could probably get Gilbert.
JakeShingler Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 I dont think we should but Martin anyway but defo Gilbert.
Granno Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 I'd snap up Gilbert any day of the week. I'm not sure we could attract Hobbs, and I don't think Martin is decent enough to make his move permanent.

Legend_in_blue Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 well it helps that Gilbert is actually a right back and not a centre halfas for the question, I think Gilbert is ours so long as we get promoted, I think Liverpool would sell Hobbs but would want more money then we are willing/able to pay... True, but Stearman was always overrated. This guy is fast and knows what to do and when it is required.
Jimmy Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 True, but Stearman was always overrated. This guy is fast and knows what to do and when it is required. maybe he was but the Wolves fans are loving him at CB
sdb Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 i'd try for Gilbert and think we'd have a good chance. I'd try and get Hobbs in on loan for another season, again assuming we go up which we're a million miles away from atm.

If they were willing to sell then i think we should break the bank to get him! A future England international IMO.....
Jimmy Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 If they were willing to sell then i think we should break the bank to get him! A future England international IMO..... if it comes to that someone like Bolton/Wigan would out bid us with ease
Uncle Albert Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 well it helps that Gilbert is actually a right back and not a centre half And Stearman played right back last season. So I was comparing Gilbert to Stearman (whilst he played at right back).
Jimmy Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 And Stearman played right back last season. So I was comparing Gilbert to Stearman (whilst he played at right back). so Iain Hume played on the wing for us, that still didn't make him a winger
Uncle Albert Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 so Iain Hume played on the wing for us, that still didn't make him a winger Did Iain Hume play every game at right wing for us last season? No he didnt. Bore off.
iancognito Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 I'd take Hobbs and Gilbert without a doubt. Martin has a lot to prove as yet as he's still behind Hendo in terms of reflexes and shot stopping. Liverpool are packed out with centre halves so Benitez might be willing to let Hobbs go. Gilbert isn't French or an established international and so has no chance of playing for more than Wenger's League Cup teams. If we go up, we'd be mad not to at least get them on another season here.

I'm pretty sure knowitall said Gilbert has said he wants to sign but we need to go up 1st
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 Yes we may want to sign them - but sadly the better they play for us the more teams become interested in their signature. And equally, if we haven't pre-agreed a fee then those will rise from what they could have been. They seem good players now - but how many times has a shit hot loan player become a poor permanent signing?

Good point and one that could be a new topic in itself! So...... how many "shit hot loan players have become a poor permanent signing?"
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 Gilbert we could get. I don't think he has a future at Arsenal. I think we could get Hobbs on loan for another year, perhaps Benitez would see Championship ( ) experience as a good thing for a young player. Reckon he'd want to as well, he and his girlfriend are both pretty settled here from what I've gathered. Not too fussed about Martin, tbh I could see us bidding for the likes of Fulop next season.
Father Ted Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 As knowitall has said: There is a great chance of us signing Gilbert. Hobbs is a future England international and I really don't see Liverpool letting him go. As for Martin -

Webbo Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 I really don't see Hobbs as a future England international or even a regular player for Liverpool. I wouldn't mind buying him if the price was right, somewhere around £1.5 million, certainly no more than £2 million. As for Gilbert he is arguably Pearson's best signing, if Arsenal want to sell him we should snap their hands off.
