Hobbs I would love to keep, but he's got a big future in the game. I think Liverpool would want him back. Gilbert the same as Hobbs, love to have him permanently, and I believe Arsenal would sell for the right deal.

Martin is no better than Henderson, Hobbs is very good but rated at Liverpool and Gilbert is an accomplished player but not really good enough for Arsenal (top-level premier league football).

I wouldn't mind buying him if the price was right, somewhere around £1.5 million, certainly no more than £2 million.As for Gilbert he is arguably Pearson's best signing, if Arsenal want to sell him we should snap their hands off. I sort of agree. As good as Hobbs is, I don't think he'll make it at Liverpool. He does look like a diamond amongst the bully boy defenders in this league, but I quite frankly don't think he will ever cut it as a Liverpool player. He can make a name for himself as a solid Premiership defender in the future, but Liverpool is a step too high for him. If we get promoted, then I'd certainly pursue Jack Hobbs. He will be expensive but I think he'll be worth it. Both him and Tunchev are two footballing centre backs who should be playing at a higher level. I would also go for Kerrea Gilbert. Again, assuming we'll be a Championship club next season, I'd snap him up if Arsenal are willing to sell. That's almost our back line sorted for the foreseeable future. I'm not too convinced about David Martin.
backinthebigtime Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Hobbs would be great but I honestly dont think it will be an option, Liverpool have sent him out on loan to gain first team footy with a view to being a regular first team squad member with them in the future. And to be fair he does look a class above most defenders I have seen in this division so far this season (including our own)/ Gilbert, has great potential because of his speed and enthusiam did some awsome covering back yesterday when they tried to hit us on the break, making a couple of tackles in the left back area, but is still very raw, got caught out badly yesterday for their first goal having almost made the same error a few mins earlier which we got away with. Martin, no thanks. Ok as a shot stopper but no better than what we already have, was at fault for the second yesterday, kicking is poor and doesnt command his area at all. I reckon out of the 3 only Gilbert would be likley to sign.

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 The good thing with Gilbert is that he already knows alot of the players (and Pearson I think (?)), be it from England youth set ups / previous clubs. That'll mean he's surely enjoying his football here, especially playing in a winning side.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 I'm not too certain Hobbs is as highly rated at liverpool as you think guys - firstly he's behind 3 fairly young and strong centre halves at the moment and I could see Liverpool replacing Hyppia if he went. We could have a chance with this guy - the other thing is whether any of there contracts are up at the end of the season?

Bentley, Pennant, Hoyte, Sidwell, Wright, Jeffers (ok, he turned out crap!) etc. Lets hope he carries on the tradition by letting us buy Gilbert, yes he is a raw talent but could turn out to be a top player.

Jack Hobbs doesn't have a future at Liverpool. Martin Škrtel, Sam Hyppia and Daniel Agger are all above him in the pecking order. And as soon as Hyppia retires, Liverpool will splash money on an already established centre back. And on top of that, Hobbs isn't good enough to feature for Liverpool at the highest level anyway. He might one day in the future become an established Premierhship defender, but no where near Liverpool standards. If we get promoted, I'd like to believe we have a chance with him. He will be expensive cos the Scousers will demand quite a lot for him.

As pointed out, he may have a chance in the Bolton's of this world, never Liverpool. Gilbert is loving it here..we're loving him here! He should be number 1 priority in the transfer market & I believe he would come. As for Martin, I'm not sure. I wouldn't be upset if he did come though. It comes down to whether they realise that signing for us means there's a very, very good chance of getting a game, or whether being an Arsenal or Liverpool player only gives them bragging rights. I know what I'd choose.

The 23-year-old defender needed oxygen and left the field on a stretcher after falling awkwardly late on at Eastlands. "He will see a specialist on Tuesday to assess the extent of the injury," said club spokesman Ian Cotton. "We will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again." Any risk of a Hobbs recall?

On your possibilities of getting Hobbs and Martin on a permanent basis, i'd say yous have a little to no chance of getting Hobbs and a decent chance of getting Martin. I'm not sure why some of you lads don't think Hobbs is highly rated here as he is, next season he will almost certainly start the season as 4th choice centre back then it's up to him to progress from there. He played a few first team games last season against Chelsea and Reading, we lost both but it was more a case of Carragher trying to do everything and cover for Hobbs when he didn't need it than Hobbs actually playing poorly. On Martin, I watched him alot in the reserves last season and although he is decent, we have younger and better Goalkeepers in the reserves now in Dean Bouzanis and Peter Gulacsi. I'm not sure yous want Martin though.
