Thracian Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 You always moan about players being rusty due to lack of match practice, but when they're your chosen ones, it matters not. It's laughable it really is. He's never had a first team game at centre midfielder, and that's because he isn't equipped to play there. Of course it matters but how many reserves match will do the trick? As for never having played a first team game in central midfield that's only partially true - he's been utilised as a fairly defensive central midfielder for several parts of games under Kelly and there have been loads of small or lightweight central midfielders who have been successful.

I'm going to buy you a fishing rod for christmas. That should make it easier for you to find more bullsh*t arguments when it comes to your chosen few.
fordy_uk2005 Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 To point 1: I really cannot see that happening. Levi just doesn't have the physical ability to play in that role.To Point 2: Also at times King has been just as anonymous. But I wouldn't mind seeing Levi being played in the 'hole' in a cup game but not on Tuesday night or anytime soon because he played well there against Quorn in pre-season. porter? do you mean levi porter or is there another one i dont know at the club? nobody who knows anything about football would play levi porter in middle of midfield if even in the team at all.
Corky Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 porter?do you mean levi porter or is there another one i dont know at the club? nobody who knows anything about football would play levi porter in middle of midfield if even in the team at all. Thracian would.
fordy_uk2005 Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 I'm having some of that. Agreed. yeah were really missing dickov because he's the reason were up there in the league aint he with all them goals and good performances
Thracian Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 I'm going to buy you a fishing rod for christmas. That should make it easier for you to find more bullsh*t arguments when it comes to your chosen few. Porter's not a "Chosen Man" of mine in the current set up. I've never once said he should displace Dyer as first choice left winger. If Weso had still been here I would have wanted him involved. It makes no sense whatsoever to rely on just two central midfielders for an entire half-season with no cover yet makes all the sense possible to find out how our team, and particularly our attack would function with two enterprising central midfielders instead of one. It would also offer an opportunity to rest Oakley to the bench and therefore keep him relatively fresh. Indeed, if we had the midfield equivalent of King I'd be suggesting the same for him at this stage and with the playing programme getting heavier.
dilko2008 Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 BBC website's preview of the game is claiming dickov has got over his back injury
fordy_uk2005 Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 There will never be a better time to play Porter and King in midfield with Gradel and Dyer outside them. And to put Mattock on in a genuine wing-back role just like the one he's been known to play so well for the Academy . Let's see exactly how well we can attack when we give ourselves the chance cos while everyone else seems satisfied about collecting a point from Oldham, the impression I got was that we scored and tried to sit on it instead of going all out for a second. One day the penny will finally drop that sitting back defending doesn't work. Half the reason we're doing so well defensively is not because we've got world class defenders but because the opposition are having to use up valuable resources keeping our attack in check. Oakley's huffed and puffed quite steadily but he's also been anonymous at times and I'd like to see how our attack functions with Porter pulling some of the distributive strings. porter is crap and never been a central midfielder. dont need to feel sorry for him just cuz he's only 4ft tall
Thracian Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 porter?do you mean levi porter or is there another one i dont know at the club? nobody who knows anything about football would play levi porter in middle of midfield if even in the team at all. Why's that then?
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 October 2008 Posted 20 October 2008 Smashing player if a bit lightweight for a striker. Sees the game well and while he has the appetite for a shot that Fryatt possesses he's also a selfless player who makes selfless runs and good passes to bring others into the game. Often an academy or reserves team lacks a bit of sparkle when he's not playing because he's absolutely tireless and never stops trying whatever the score. Before anyone takes those observations and somehow translates them into me saying he's a superstar I haven't got a clue how he'd get on in the first team. My feeling is that he'd find it hard to adjust at first and that his lightweight stature would be a bit vulnerable. But our best-ever footballer, Davie Gibson, was McKay's build - and in a day when the hard cases really did take people out. So maybe McKay will cope and bloody good luck to him if he gets the chance. Obviously you'd know more about him than me, the only time I've seen him play was against Quorn (where he looked a handful and scored a well taken goal), but he seems to be in red hot form for the academy at the minute, and bags a few for the reserves as well. Perhaps his energy could make him useful as an impact sub?
bigneville Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 I would be looking to keep the same side that played at Oldham. The only possible issue I see is. Powell being able to play 2 games in 4 days at his age. Other than that, it would be the same side for me.

A few weeks ago I'd have shared your concerns but, remarkably, Powell seems to be durability defined. I'd certainly have Mattock on the bench though with the view to giving him a re-introduction to first team football at some stage if the opportunity arises which, of course, might not be the case at any stage.
Messi Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 Martin Gilbert Kisnorbo Morrison Powell Gradel Oakley King Dyer Fryatt Howard
Thracian Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 Kisnorbo instead of Tunchev? You're having a laugh. Now he's marking people, Tunchev is the kind of centre back we've needed for years... calm, thoughtful, constructive and such a clever reader of the game and timer of a challenge. Individually we might not have the best defenders in the world but collectively Tunchev does so much to make them function effectively. Seven clean sheets in 14 games. Just nine goals against. That's even better than last year's excellent record which was built on a defensive blockade and next to nothing in attack for far too much of the time. Twenty-four goals we've scored in those 14 games because we're far more constructive from the back and have some wingers. Last year we'd scored 15 in our first 14 games and it didn't get any better. No wonder. The midfield was by-passed most of the time as we too often resorted to humping the ball aimlessly forward. And you want to rid us of our most constructive centre-back!
Fox92 Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 Keep an unchanged side? After all, we didn't loose.

stevie909 Posted 21 October 2008 Posted 21 October 2008 tbh id rather have one of the kids on the bench ahead of big bad baz. if its nil nil, can we just bring his knees on in the 89th?

Adams has been dropped. Would have thought he'd make the bench (especially given that mattock and berner, two elft backs, are there). Anyone know if he is injured.?
