davieG Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Cheltenham Town boss Martin Allen has admitted that a bid to sign Leicester City striker Barry Hayles is in the balance, writes James McNamara. Hayles' loan spell at Whaddon Road ended after Sunday's defeat at the hands of Peterborough United – where the front-man suffered a second red card of the campaign and was handed a four-game ban. Allen, however, is still interested in signing the striker permanently, but admits the move could end in failure if Hayles is unable to come to an agreement with Leicester to terminate his contract early. He said: "It is a situation that is out of my hands and does have a question mark hanging over it at the moment. "I am waiting on other people's decisions (regarding Hayles) and I'd like things to be a little more clear-cut – at the moment we don't know which way we are turning." document.getElementById('article-detail-impact-tile').innerHTML = document.getElementById('INVarticle-detail-impact-tile').innerHTML;document.getElementById('INVarticle-detail-impact-tile').innerHTML = ''; The manager was unwilling to commit when asked how many players he would like to bring in during the transfer window, due to uncertainties over the length of time some of his injured players may be out for. "We have a number of injured players and we don't know how long some of them are going to be out," he said. "Doing deals at the moment is questionable because some of these players could be back very quickly and others could be out for a bit longer. "That leaves me in a very tricky position because we don't have a bundle of money here, so we can't go out and sign loads of players." Allen confirmed that defender Drissa Diallo, who had been on-loan from MK Dons, and striker Elvis Hammond have both signed 18-month deals to stay at Whaddon Road. There will be no return for former loanees Scott Murray (Bristol City) or Josh Payne (West Ham), but Allen is hoping to complete a permanent move for injured Leicester midfielder James Wesolowski before the end of the window. Wesolowski played four games on loan earlier this season before having his spell cut short by a broken ankle, and Allen said: "James isn't back in training yet, but we are hoping to do a permanent deal before the end of the month." Goalkeeper Shane Higgs has extended his loan with Wolverhampton Wanderers for an additional month. Midfielders Craig Armstrong and Scott Brown have agreed deals to terminate their contracts early and left Whaddon Road.
Jon the Hat Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Such a shame he can't stay fit. Wish him luck wherever he ends up.
wirralsimon Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 I hope Barry Hayles can reach an agreement. It just didn't work out for him here, but it would be good if he can find regular football at this stage in his career and he is unlikely to play for LCFC again even if he comes back. Simon
Tubes Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Weso & Permanent deal? Don't let it happen Pearson Why? I think after three major injuries that Weso is too much of a risk, hes never had a full season able to play and think we should cash in now.
Carlos9 Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Weso is a good talent but like people have been saying, we mareswell cash in on him whilste we can because its obvious he is injury prone on a next level 2 broken legs and a broken ankle at his age aint right!
Anish Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Offload Weso if we can. He's far too injury prone to be of any use to us and we've got plenty of midfielders anyway so even if he was fit he would only be a benchwarmer at best.
Joe. Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 It's a shame to see a player like Weso going, but ultimately it's the right thing to do. Wish both of them luck for the future.
Cheese Me Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 We should definitely offload Hayles but I'd be sad to see Weso go, he still has potential I'm sure. Also looking at the earlier bits in the story I suspect Allen is looking at a bid for a freebie or nominal fee. We'd be mad to let him go for nothing, especially with Kishishev gone even if Weso isn't starting he'd be good cover when fit.
Uncle Albert Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Not fussed Barry is close to a permanent deal there. But i'll never forget his performance against Barnsley. Heroic. Shame about Weso being linked to a permanent move, injuries have really ballsed him up. Definetly has got the potential and as Oakley and Clemence look to be on the road to their retirements in a few years Weso should be able to seal a starting place alongside King. Weso and King would balance each other perfectly.
Bryn Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 I don't expect there to be much cashing being done if Weso goes to Cheltenham, they're not exactly flush are they?
moseeds Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 I don't expect there to be much cashing being done if Weso goes to Cheltenham, they're not exactly flush are they? Exactly, might as well keep him on our books and let him recuperate elsewhere because I get the feeling James would even pay city to play for them!
Thracian Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 I've got nothing against Weso and have always thought of him as a goodish player. But those injuries are a factor and even a fit Weso is not what I think Pearson most seems to like in a midfielder. Don't mistake me. I think Pearson thinks he's okay too. But I don't think he sees him as a first choice player because he doesn't have the versatility that King, Oakley and even Berner have and I very much doubt he'd keep Davies out if we sign him for a bit longer. We've had goals and assists from right across midfield this season but Weso's not really a goals and assists player. He's an attack breaker but not one who can effect much in the air. Bottom line it's surely best for both parties to move the lad on.
davieG Posted 2 January 2009 Author Posted 2 January 2009 Weso still has 2.5 years of his contract remaining, as some have said Cheltenham wont have money to buy and would probably expect us to pay off some of Weso's contract as I suspect he's on more than they can afford to pay him. If he goes he'll be going for the prospect of 1st team football albeit most likely D4 level not money, if that's the case you'd have to admire that decision of play before pay.
Flynny Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 I don't expect him to go. Allen has to say that to keep the fans happy but I still think he has a future here.
Daggers Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 Wesolowski played four games on loan earlier this season before having his spell cut short by a broken ankle, and Allen said: "James isn't back in training yet, but we are hoping to do a permanent deal before the end of the month." Good - he is a waste of our time and efforts, I said he'd never play for us again when he went and I'm glad of it. Nice enough lad, no end of bad luck...simply not the player for us.
Finnegan Posted 2 January 2009 Posted 2 January 2009 "Cash in" to Cheltenham? Get real. I agree he may need to leave in the near future but you may as well see if he makes an impact in the rest of the season at all and try selling him for a bit more than the near pittance they could afford.

I'm sure the stumbling blocks will be how much money they both want from their remaining contracts rather than how much anyone will pay for them, (which will be nothing). Neither of them carry a resale value now and neither will, Weso has had long enough to prove himself and he has failed. It's not prudent to keep failures in a successful squad, it does nothing for moral to retain those with no hope of playing first team football as it serves to reinforce a mediocre attitude. They play no part in our future, cut them adrift.

Lovejoy Posted 3 January 2009 Posted 3 January 2009 Will sound harsh, but I don't think Weso is good enough (consistent enough) to make it here. Still be interested to know what sort of £££ would be involved?
