Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 Interesting read -> http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ton/7811509.stm Living in Bournemouth a fair few of my mates are Saints fans....and a part of me is sadistically fairly happy that they might do their turn in League One next season. Their form reminds me of us last season, generally very poor with a random great result (ala West Brom away 4-1). Are they in a worse position than us at this stage too? 26 games, 5 wins, 22 goals...woeful. Also getting shit attendences, and massive financial distrust regarding the competentcy of Rupert Lowe. I only realised recently too that they are loaning out their 'big earners'....Stern John and Rasiak who are handy in the Champ.... gives me a rye smile!
Simi Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I started a thread not long ago about this sort of thing. I think there is a clear link with clubs like Southampton, Coventry and us. All three of the clubs had a massive desire to shift stadiums and bring in a new younger generation of supporters that they couldn't attract to old and unfashionable grounds. Shame really, because when these clubs aren't succesful, the families aren't going to be that interested, soon moving back to the glory four. Then they're back to square one, only having alienated the 16-30 section that seem a lot more harder to come by than they were say 10-15 years ago. A lot more to answer for at Southampton though, where did the money for players like Bale, Walcott and Beattie go?
Mickey O'Neil Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I agree with Ched as well, Covscum are not too far off where Soton or Leicester are/were.
Tevez Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I've just got a gut feeling that Southampton will fall like Grimsby.
Daggers Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 ...and West Ham ...and Portsmouth ...and...and... There's a tower of cards just waiting for the tiniest of breezes.
Darkzzz_ Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I love Southampton. They brought Nigel Pearson to us.
GLC Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I love Southampton. They brought Nigel Pearson to us. NIGEL PEARSON
wirralsimon Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 Always hated Southampton after watching them winning by kicking us off the pitch at Filbert Street in the 70's. No-one would be happier than me if they went down. Simon
C-man Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 If they go down, they will struggle in this division.
dandannieldanok Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 They haven't had it as bad as us, at least they've been in the play-offs in the not too distant past. Since our relegation in 04 we've been lower half of the championship at best.
Joe. Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 It's about time they got relegated to be honest. They've flirted with relegation for a couple of years now and only just stayed up last year. With a completely new manager and new team they're doing no better. Something tells me they'd struggle in League One too with a severe lack of experience at their disposal.
RowlattsFox Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 If they go down then I can see them going into administration, the reason they're playing the youngsters at the minute is too avoid the 10 point deduction but if they went down then i think they'll take the punishment.
Koke Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 I quite like Southampton. It's Portsmouth I can't stand. I hope they stay up but I fear it's their turn to visit League 1.
Lovejoy Posted 5 January 2009 Posted 5 January 2009 Is it wrong that I like the slightly larger clubs to fail? I was delighted when Leeds went to L1, and would be if Southampton did too .
Maybes Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 Is it wrong that I like the slightly larger clubs to fail? I was delighted when Leeds went to L1, and would be if Southampton did too . Southampton...large
Lovejoy Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 Southampton...large I did say "slightly larger" . But let's be honest, they are bigger than teams like Doncaster.
Ultra Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 Southampton are about the same size as us. From the time they moved to St Mary's until they went down from the Premier League, their gates were around the 30000 mark or even higher. Unfortunately for them, Rupert Lowe knows even less about running a football club than Milan Mandaric does. Hence the reason Nigel Pearson is with us and not still on the south coast. This season they don't have a team prepared to donate six points to their survival campaign like we did last time. If, as seems likely, they do go down, it could take them a long time to recover.
lildave3 Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 If we go up, then i'll be rooting for Saints to come down. If we stay down, i'll be cheering them on to stay up.
Sods Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 If we go up, then i'll be rooting for Saints to come down. If we stay down, i'll be cheering them on to stay up. We have a shocking record at their ground, Ive been 4 times as well!
J.Lisemore Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 I can see them getting relegated this season, i hope so aswel.
C-man Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 Shockingly ran club. How their fans must wish it was the 90s again.
Ultra Posted 6 January 2009 Posted 6 January 2009 Shockingly ran club. How their fans must wish it was the 90s again. We are talking about the saints here, right? These words seem strangely familiar..
