Ozwin Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Hey, was just wondering if anyone here knew their stuff when it comes to building up leg mass. Was thinking more the calf area but anything to increase the size of my twiglets would be great. What are some good excersises and stretches I could do? Cheers.

To be honest, there is a genetic component (e.g. I don't need to specifically build up my leg muscles, they are just there). However, squats and lunges (and calf raises) are generally commonly used for this purpose.
Fox You Forest Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 More importantly, anyone on here a Bird?? I've got a wig and everyone has their price.
GLC Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 More importantly, anyone on here a Bird?? Yes we have plenty of birds! Sexist!!! we call them Women KEEP OFF!!!
Ozwin Posted 22 January 2009 Author Posted 22 January 2009 I've not done anything yet tbh, I was thinking of doing a set running routine every few days but that's about all. And stop making my topic go off topic you slags!
Edmund Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Simple, Uphill running and Uphill cycling. Don't touch the leg machines unless your lazy. Running uphill gets all your stabilisers built and does your whole leg simultaneously. Leg machines only do specific muscles. Calfs are the hardest part to build but in order to have strong calfs you need strong thighs, as your body needs an excuse to build that particular muscle i.e strong calfs to support your stronger thighs. Make sense? Like someone else said it's down to your genetics, height, diet all sorts of things. If your fitness is shite start by hill walking and slowly progress.
Raj Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 take horse steroids. Its easy and it'll build you up like a brick shit house. LD3 takes em.

In some people, running can have the opposite effect. You'll get better and shape and definition, but the calves themselves could actually get smaller! I call these people bastards.
Corky Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Tommy G? He got crushed by one of his weights. So sad
StanSP Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Also looking to build my calfs. Might try the running uphill/cycle Anyone know any alternative abs exercises, other than sit-ups or crunches...
Guest Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Also looking to build my calfs. Might try the running uphill/cycle Anyone know any alternative abs exercises, other than sit-ups or crunches... Try varying the crunches/sit ups. Instead of going all the way up or down, try holding halfway. That's a killer!!
The People's Hero Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 I'm currently attempting to lose weight by just not eating. Concentrating has become difficult, but I'll let you know my findings.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Also looking to build my calfs. Might try the running uphill/cycle Anyone know any alternative abs exercises, other than sit-ups or crunches... The plank! Get on the floor in the press up position, but support your weight on your forearms rather than your hands, if you see what I mean. Try and stay as straight as you can and suck your stomach in, and see how long you can hold the position (it should be uncomfortable after a minute or so). It helps if you remember to breathe. Build your calves by standing on a step and letting your heels hang off the edge, so they're lower than your toes, and then stand up gradually until you're on your tip toes, and then return slowly to the original position. Hold dumbells in your hand to make it harder, but try not to fall down the stairs

Squats, calf raises, and resistance bike work should bulk them up and little bit. For the person who asked about alternative abs stuff, try holding onto a pull up bar and doing knee raises, or anything like planks holding yourself up for a minute with leaning on your elbows and your toes.

Well, you need an enthusiastic partner and a settee or similar but getting there should be a whole lot more fun that the cold and wet of outdoor running or the grim labour of the gym. Sorts the calf muscles and keeps the heart pumping too, so I'm told!

Your best bet if your after the opposite of what the thread starter requested is just do a flat terrain jog/sprint for more than hour. The average person doesn't actually burn fat until after half hour of exercise. Your body taps into the certain energy reserves first. To the thread starter also eat lots of complex carbs the night before you run, potatoes, pasta, bread, oats, cereals etc This will have a profound effect on how your muscles react to the hill run. If done correctly you won't lose muscle you'll gain. It's what the sprinters do.

cisono Posted 22 January 2009 Posted 22 January 2009 Anyone know any alternative abs exercises, other than sit-ups or crunches... You may want do those correctly in the first place. 90% of people do them incorrectly (and/or too many). Advanced exercises include the wood chop and side-twisting type crunches.
