The Golliwog debate

If you want to talk about a my fuzzy-haired tennis playing grandson looking like a golden golliwog, feel free. I couldn't give a shit.

And why the hell Carol Thatcher or anyone else should accept being bullied into making the sort of coerced Inquisitional apology that somehow justifies the BBC's warped idea of what was meant or conveyed by the remark, I've no idea.

Oh fuck off, Tony. It isn't the BBC's warped view of what's meant blah blah, it's a racist comment. I would even go so far as to say that if you DON'T think it's inappropriate and racist you are either A. Racist yourself or B. Massively ignorant to the point of sheer stupidity.

This isn't the mean and nasty BBC with their horrible, government funded oppreshunz. THEY JUST DONT WANT HER BACK ON THEIR SHOW. Is that surprising? We're not talking about BBC, Auntie, the big organization. We're talking about the human beings who make the One show, who were there when she made the comment, banning her from returning to THEIR show as a regular guest.

She isn't being bullied into anything. They offered her the opportunity to accept her mistake, she refused, they said okay. She wasn't a full time employee, this isn't a Rossesque situation or even that similar.

Racist comment my arse.

And you won't browbeat me a la BBC.

I suppose my son would be some sort of ignorant "ist" too for calling taunting me with strains of "You Fat Bastard".

Get a life, pal and focus on something that really matters.

As for the politials of the One Show you can stick em. Their show is so much shit anyway most of the time.

PS: And you can call me racist as much as you like. Firstly you can think and say what you like as far as I am concerned, secondly I'd seriously doubt that any protest of mine would change the way you think in any case (your views, right or wrong, always seem pretty entrenched) and thirdly it is probably standard tactic of yours to aim names at people who disagree with you. It's a wonder the BBC don't recruit you as another of their PC enforcers.

Thrac, you can really be a muppet sometimes, what effect that term 'gollywog' has or has not should be determined by those who it represents and has had it's effect on, not some fool off a forum and not by the bbc. The term is well known to be a comment that is used to racially slur black people, yes it was initially used to label a doll, but the term wog is said to derive from it. The term has been turned by vile racist, it brings about emotiions to those that have suffered from it, now what's so hard to understand by that. Similarly the term nigger or paki, there origins come from 'normal' terms but those bad in society have converted those into ones of disgust!!!

Yes, it is offensive, she may aswell said 'nigger'. Like I said, a friend of mine was for years called a gollywog, and that guy grew to be 6 ft 4 tall, and if you had called him a gollywog, even in jest, you would be left with no teeth!!!

On the incidence, yes it's been blown out of proportion, Ms Thatcher is not one likely to be bullied, and yes people complianed and yes she felt the need to apologise, end of story, no fooking PC brigade fooker in sight!!

I have to say I think it's disgraceful that anyone would even consider smearing Daggers' tele with shit.

I dunno, I heard he's been watching all sorts of shit on his TV for years!!!!

:appl:

I'm as inpolitically correct if that's a word as anyone but it was a racist comment that she shouldn't have said, but I don't for a minute believe she meant it nastily so the BBC should have given her a stern telling off, warn her about her future use of said terms and taken her off the air until the fuss has calmed down. If she said such a comment again however then she should have been in serious trouble.

All a lot of fuss over nothing. Why do people get all aboard the racist bandwagon when something like this happens? She made a stupid remark, yes. But everyone makes mistakes.

It probably offended the two people that heard it, but now everyone in the whole country knows about it and her life is now ruined for the next few months while the media eat away.

How is it not!? What planet are you on that calling someone a golliwog isn't racist? Would she have said the same about a white man with big hair? Would she fuck. She could have said any number of things from "Jesus, look at that do'" to "Boy needs 'aircut" or anything else. She didn't. She called the man a golliwog.

I suppose my son would be some sort of ignorant "ist" too for calling taunting me with strains of "You Fat Bastard".

Siiiiiigh. Yes and I'm guilty of GBH for punching my sister in the arm aged 8. Give over. Calling something a joke doesn't stop it being offensive, in many ways the fact she can sit there and act so blasé and careless about the fact she's branding him such is almost worse.

Get a life, pal and focus on something that really matters.

Er, and what exactly is your word count in this thread so far, Tone?

As for the politials of the One Show you can stick em. Their show is so much shit anyway most of the time.

PS: And you can call me racist as much as you like.

Given your track record of risqué race-related comments I don't think I'm shooting too far wide, am I really? I don't care that you've got "some Asian friends" or you "once had a black girlfriend" or whatever. This is hardly your first forray into the debatably inappropriate as I'm sure your Swan Lestas would be willing to gleafully recall.

Firstly you can think and say what you like as far as I am concerned

Merci!

, secondly I'd seriously doubt that any protest of mine would change the way you think in any case (your views, right or wrong, always seem pretty entrenched)

And rightly so in this instance. I consider myself fairly open minded but I don't really think this is much up for debate, I fail to see why it's become such a sensation. She said something offensive, she's been banned from returning. Fair beans, really.

And thirdly it is probably standard tactic of yours to aim names at people who disagree with you. It's a wonder the BBC don't recruit you as another of their PC enforcers.

Calling you racist isn't aiming "names", it's aiming accusations.

So he should turn to violence? Some one took the piss out of me when I fell over on the ice a couple of days ago. Did I get up and break his jaw? no.

It's not inherently racist to use the word 'black.'

I'd personally say it becomes racist when it's unnecessary in context. But then that's it's use that I find offensive not the phrase.

For example "Barry Hayles is black" = not offensive. If you were to say "Steve Howard's a big twat!" and on the other hand say "Barry Hayles is a big, black twat!" that's where - as far as I'm concerned - you're out of line.

I don't really care who wants to call me PC like it's a bad thing. I loathe, like the rest of you, overly political correctness. But I also loathe ignorance and using anti-PC as an excuse to be an abusive, bigotted tit.

For example.

Why was it necessary to say 'My Indian neighbour'?

Then the vast majority of those bigot wankers defend the original poster, and berate the one guy who thinks it was unecessary because he's being 'too PC'.

Oh, and then I found their Carol Thatcher row. I read about 5 posts and the general theme is...(unsuprisingly)...PC gone mad.

lol

... you think a bit of stick for being a clumsy tit is comparable to racist abuse?

What a stupid point, ofcourse not, no ones condoning violence.........but that's his\her perogative, for every action there's a reaction, whether it's right or wrong everyone makes there own decision. If a person is unable to controlling one's emotions when subjected to reminders of there scared youth then blind justice takes place, this is the real world my friend, full of grey!!!!!!!!!!!

Racist abuse.? She said it in private to a small number of people.

It's just unbelievable how worked up people get over this. Everyone gives it out and gets stick throughout life whether you are black, white, small, tall, fat, thin, wear glasses etc. the way you become a bigger person is to rise above it.

Twelve people.

And you've no idea what skin colour those people were, who their partners or family were and who else working on production of the show was in earshot.

I agree with you that this shouldn't be a national sensation, I agree it was in a relative degree of privacy and didn't need to be broadcast - but that doesn't make the statement any more appropriate. Racism is racism. End of.

My girlfriend has some kind of indian background...although I assume. Her dad is 'indian' and her mum is white. Never really asked because I've never seen it as an issue to be honest, neither has she. thats probably seems quite a naive attitude to have I guess
