Joe. Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 Pleased for Liverpool and their win tonight, proved everybody wrong again. I didn't manage to watch the game, but by the sounds of it they played very well without both Torres and Gerrard. Nobody likes playing them in the Champions League, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them go all the way. Unless Real can produce something special at Anfield (very unlikely), then I can see Liverpool progressing fairly comfortably through to the next round here. English teams have done well for themselves in this first leg.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 This week has yet again shown why the Premier League is at such a more higher standard than Italy and Spain. Like Bert said none of the English sides have conceded goals against some of the so called best teams in Italy and Spain. Well done to all the English teams and I hope they can all get through and get Quater Final draws that mean we can have 4 English teams in the Semi's. It is impressive, but the ties are only half over. Expect Juve to be stronger at home, and Inter to be more adventurous away from the San Siro.

I didn't manage to watch the game, but by the sounds of it they played very well without both Torres and Gerrard. Torres did start though and done alright, had a good shot well saved from Casillas in the first half. Real dominated in the first half but failed to test Reina once, Liverpool's defending throughout was topnotch. Highlight of the half was Alonso's ambitious shot from his own half which really troubled Casillas. Torres came off soon after he was booked, needless booking aswell. Babel, Kuyt and Benayoun done that much running in the second half it was unreal and Aurelio's ball for the goal was pinpoint. Good header but Gago had a mare mate.

My bad, thought I saw somebody had said he didn't start earlier. An Alonso halfway line effort? He bloody loves them.

shen Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 Yup.What a performance by Liverpool tonight, was absolutely brilliant. Defensively I think they are one of the best teams in Europe along with Man Utd. I only think Reina had one testing save to make during the 90 minutes, I think? Alonso and Mascherano were very, very good tonight. This 4-2-3-1 formation is excellent, I love it. Great win for Chelsea aswell, it will show there will together if they can see the job out in Italy aswell and show the critics who have been questioning Chelsea's team togetherness aswell. Will be tough out there. This week has yet again shown why the Premier League is at such a more higher standard than Italy and Spain. Credit to Liverpool for containing Real well tonight. Real were quite unimaginative and they lacked any sort of movement bar Robben. Liverpool themselves however hardly tested Casillas either though, and if it weren't for Benayoun (was a thorn in Real's side all the time) it would've been hard to tell the sides apart. Of course, Liverpool are excused being the away side, without Gerrard etc etc, but I'm left bemused at your praise of their style of play. It's all about containment and the occasional opportunist half-chance. Hardly anything breathtaking about it, effective as it may be. Give me Man Utd's probing game or Barca's possession game any day over that dull football style of Liverpool FC...
lildave3 Posted 26 February 2009 Posted 26 February 2009 I said it when it first started, the final is in Rome - of course Liverpool will win it!

That's a fair shout from the way your looking at it. The English sides have done well, I can only applaud the efforts of them and it would be great for the country of course. But my opinions of the league remain the same. I get more excitement from Spain, Italy and recently Germany. (Just my personal view) The premier league is one of the best leagues in the world. The reason it is up there is because of the foreigners, who are certainly that bit more talented than the English players Who do I blame? The wankers at the F.A, they have neglected youth talent over the years in favour of £££££. That is why I respect Spain and Italy so much, the way they handle their youth is bloody brilliant and I have been lucky enough to witness a few of them whilst on my travels. The only English team I have wanted to do well over the years because I respect them is Man Utd, If they go on to win it again I would be happy with that.

Sorry I like a different style of play to everyone else. Yet this was the same formation Liverpool played that scored 5 goals against Arsenal over two ties and 4 against Chelsea last season. Compared to many other teams who arent as attacking last season. The same formation that beat Besiktas 8-0 last season, hardly containment and occasionally oppourtunist.

Fantastic result by Liverpool boy did RM miss van nis, I agree the standard of the PREM is higher than italy we can afford to pay for the best players I read there were more spanish players playing last night for liverpool than RM . But all the matches are so close that all 4 PREM teams could go out. Hope not though I dont care losing money if its english clubs that knock the teams I bet out. One things for sure we're all set for 4 cracking tension filled 2nd leg's.
StanSP Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Tuesday 10th March (tonight) Liverpool (1) - (0) Real Madrid Juventus (0) - (1) Chelsea Liverpool go into the game 1-0 up

Joe. Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Bayern Munich 2-0 Sporting Juventus 1-0 Chelsea Liverpool 0-0 Real Madrid Panathinaikos 1-0 Villarreal Those in bold to go through.
StanSP Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Only doing British ties (and Barcelona ) Tuesday 10th March (tonight) Liverpool (1) - (0) Real Madrid Juventus (0) - (1) Chelsea Liverpool go into the game after securing an away goal and victory 2 weeks ago. Likely to face an attacking Real Madrid side, but I think they will come through with a 1-1 draw. As for Chelsea, I don't think they'll progress. I have a feeling Juve will score early and Chelsea will become frustrated as they push for a winner. Could go to penalties, where Juve will win I believe. Wednesday 11th March Roma (0) - (1) Arsenal Barcelona (1) - (1) Lyon Man Utd (0) - (0) Inter Milan At home, Man Utd are too strong for anyone right now I think. Can see them winning this by one or two goals. I think Arsenal will hold on to a draw in Rome. It's all they need really And I just want Barcelona to win , which I think they will 2-0 or 3-1. Your thoughts?
purpleronnie Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Really looking for the ties, its all so finely balanced, it wouldnt surprise me if all the english clubs went through or all got knocked out.
lavrentis Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Bayern Munich 3-0 Sporting (Bayern should have it easy) Juventus 0-1 Chelsea (Chelsea are good in the champs league and will score) Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid (Home advantage should do it) Panathinaikos 2-1 Villarreal (Extra time last minute shocker)
Darkzzz_ Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Hope Juve can progress but I won't be holding my breath as Chelsea are a strong side. It will take a huge performance from Real Madrid to knock Liverpool out, but it certainly isn't out of the question. I think the English clubs have a great chance to be fair to them and I think it is certain we will see a English club in the final yet again. Out of all the CL games this week my only main concern is that Lyon don't come to Camp Nou and knock Barca out, something that is possible. Enjoy the football everyone!
Joe. Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Just can't see Liverpool not going through. Anfield is an incredible place to play a football match on a Champions League night, and very few teams come away with anything at all from there. If Liverpool can win in Madrid, I can't see them slipping up at home.

lcfc_jme Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 Bayern Munich - SportingJuventus - Chelsea Liverpool - Real Madrid Panathinaikos - Villarreal Those in bold to win and earn me some money please.
lildave3 Posted 10 March 2009 Posted 10 March 2009 I gotta say I think Essien starting could be a risk. Hasn't started a game for what, 6, 7 months? Hopefully it will work out alright though. A team that lacks width though.
