GLC Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 The referee roundly criticised for his handling of West Ham United's recent 1-0 at Wigan has been demoted to non-league football.Stuart Attwell was condemned by players, managers, supporters and pundits alike recently following his handling of the game in which two players were dismissed with a further eight receiving cautions. At just 26 years of age Attwell, who had been fast-tracked through the leagues by referee's chief Keith Hackett was the youngest ever to officiate in a Premier League fixture. However it could be some considerable time before he does so again after it was confirmed that his next game in charge will be the FA Trophy fixture between Stevenage and Ebbsfleet this weekend. Rookie Attwell spent last weekend on the sidelines for Bury's League Two clash with Rochdale, where he was on duty as the fourth official. However having expected to return to refereeing this weekend the league's decision to place him in charge of such a low-profile game represents a huge snub to the Nuneaton-born official. Sent Blackpool's Ian Evatt off for a professional foul; TV replays confirmed no contact had been made. 3. Left Derby boss Paul Jewell raging after disallowing two legitimate Rams 'goals' in injury time having already made eight booking and issuing one red card in a relatively friendly derby. 2. Dismissed West Ham's Carlton Cole for two minor offences before losing control of the game (booking eight and dismissing two in total). 1. StanSP Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 To be honest, he should have been demoted straight away for that Reading Watford freak goal. But I disagree with Number 2. Cole's offences weren't minor, especially the high foot one. A second later and the opposing player would have had stud marks all over his face, so that was definitely a booking.

It was clear from the Watford-Reading game that Attwell was way out of his depth. Action should have been taken against him then.

Action should have been taken against him then. It's telling when Steve Bruce said Carlton Coal shouldn't have been sent off and Zola said that Lucas Neil should have been. Attwell is a joke of a referee.

They parade the guy because he is young, and wish to disprove a belief that experienced ref's make better decisions, well they royaly fooked that up and have now fooked Atwell over. He will be back!
Edmund Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 Shit that is annoying. Match of the day was a comedy fest with that ref. Never seen a single player give him any respect. Can remember when the motd pundits were slaying into him. Also wasn't he the ref in his first game gave a penalty for a little shirt grab when ref's have never awarded peno's for these. He was doing everything by the book. Got to feel sorry for him but at the same time im sorry I will be missing his comedy cameos. Just hope he doesn't ref a leicester game in the near future unless he wants to give us phantom goals.

Asha Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 Shocking ref. Was clearly promoted to the top league too soon. Give him a couple of seasons reffing just lower league stuff and it should help him for the future.

Koke Posted 11 March 2009 Posted 11 March 2009 I actually feel sorry for him. And I echo what Kilworth said. And also, that Watford/Reading disaster was the linesman's fault. The ref ultimately had to trust the lino's view on things and had to make the decision in accordance to that.

Any referee should be able to see a ball go yards wide of the goal without the help of the linesman. He shouldn't have been fast tracked and I feel sorry for him for that, but he's still absolute guff.
The People's Hero Posted 12 March 2009 Posted 12 March 2009 Actually makes the rest of the refs in the football league look fairly competent. He's an absolute clown. Should have been sacked rather than demoted. Football is football afterall.
