TV Deal

The Football League's new three-year broadcast agreement with Sky Sports and the BBC commences at the start of next season.

The package costs £264m, which represents a 135 per cent increase on the current deal that ends next month.

Each Championship club will receive £2.5m per season as part of the new agreement.

That will drop to £440,000 for clubs in League One and £300,000 for those in League Two a huge disparity between the Championship and the two leagues below.

The new deal was agreed in November 2007. The BBC will televise 10 live Championship matches each season, plus the Carling Cup final and two legs of the semi-finals.

In addition, they will also be able to broadcast highlights and clips of League fixtures

Exactly the reason why it was a massive bonus in going up sooner rather than later. I just hope it doesn't have the effect the TV money as had on the Premiership ie. more foreigners and furthering the gap between divisions.

Looking forward to the bbc's highlights. ITV's "The championship" show is alright but that presenter is fooking annoying. If it is like motd then it will be top draw.

Contractually, the BBC have to show their highlights show before midday on Sunday after the saturday matches.

So they dont know yet whether they will show it after MOTD or on the Sunday morning.

One thing is for certain, it will be a standalone show, rather than incorporated with Premier League MOTD.

They also have to show one match at extended highlights (I have the tender document... if you want any more needless info just ask :P)

Heres hoping we are lucky enough to be one of the BBCs live Championship games

Does it say when the 10 BBC games will be? Obviously not exact dates but does it specify 5 before Xmas? Otherwise, they could have a block of 7 and then nothing until the last 3 weeks for example! Also, what about play-offs?? Do they have any live games or is it included in the 10?

Ten games, that means upto 20 teams could feature. I would think the fact that the BBC will want to feature all the bigger teams at least once, plus there seems to be a few Leicester fans at the Beeb means we're almost certain to feature.

Mandaric will be pleased.

The highlights won't be put in to MOTD. It will be a different show. There's no way the football league would like their highlights show being tapped on to the end of an existing one, unless that is it is shown after MOTD, then repeated Sunday morning.

Great news :D

Stick MOTD at 10 for 1:15.

Stick championship at 11:15 for 1:15. Job done.

2 and a half hours of football on a saturday night, and not that late.

No, and yes! :)

The BBC has a few of the packages that were on offer... this is one of them.

The Football League Live Match Package A

The right and obligation to broadcast live a total of 10 Matches from The Championship (on a first pick basis), plus both legs of one of The Championship play-off semi-finals (on a second pick basis after Package Two).

The play-off final by the way, will be live on SKY only.

It will average out I suspect as a game a month. Whether they save a few, I wouldnt be sure that the FL would allow that to be honest.

This is the 'Rights and Obligations' for the BBC highlights package...

Broadcast Rights and Obligations:

(a) The right and obligation to show on a weekly basis during each season, not less than sixty (60) minutes of highlights programming, to include as much of the Match action played in that week as possible, with a maximum of 20 minutes of Footage from any Match. The sixty minutes of programming may be broken down into more than one programme during the week.

Each highlights programme must be shown as close to the Match action it relates to as possible, preferably on the same day as the Matches concerned are played provided that highlights of Matches broadcast live on the day of the highlights programme may not be broadcast before two hours after the end of the Match. Any highlights programme featuring Matches played on a Saturday must be broadcast between 22.00 that day and 12.00 noon the following day (Sunday).

(b) The right to show on a weekly basis during each season, a preview programme and/or a magazine programme, showcasing the upcoming Matches in The Football League and/or reviewing the season so far. Each such programme must commence prior to midnight on any given day.

© The right to include in daily news bulletins clips of up to two (2) minutes in length of Match action from that day.

(d) The right to include in its highlights programmes highlights of Matches in The Football League Trophy and the obligation to show highlights of the final of The Football League Trophy.

Great news.

ITV are so piss poor at football it's untrue and at least with the beeb doing it live we won't get "Red Light Special" Pleat doing co-commentaries. Best news of all :)
