An idea for our 125th anniversary

With next season being our 125th anniversary I had the idea that we could combine the Birch's end of season run with a run of our own to raise money for the away shirt sponsor, LOROS. The idea is that 125 people on here sign up and agree to raise a minimum of £100 for charity (giving at least £12,500 in total). On the last home game of the season we all do a certain number of laps of the pitch with Birchenhall. The pitch is apparently 110 yards by 76 yards meaning a lap is about 340 metres. 25 laps would be 8.5km (just over 5 miles) which seems a reasonable distance to get around and attract sponsorship with.

I would be more than happy to organise this, firstly by e mailing Peter Jones to assess how viable the idea is and then by coordinating with the club the timings and also how to arrange collection and donation of the sponsorship money (ideally using a Just Giving page for the entire group).

The only foreseeable problem is that the club may have an issue with 125 people running around the pitch. Personally given the nature of the cause and the fact it combines our away shirt sponsor and the anniversary for the club I think this and any other potential issues could easily be resolved, particularly given that it would happen in just under a year's time, giving us plenty of time to sort it out.

This thread isn't designed to be a sign up thread, more a discussion of the idea to iron out any problems I haven't thought of and also to improve it with your ideas. Once we have the finalised plan I will e mail Peter Jones and subject to getting an approval in principal will create a sign up thread. If we don't get 125 people we can open it up to friends, family and other fans (possibly through an advert in the programme).

What do you reckon?

I don't think we've had it that long.

On a serious note though it does sound like a good idea

Oops. Corrected.

Just to add - I think the reason I had this idea was because there seems to be a pretty large running contingent on here so I didn't expect it to be too difficult to get some momentum going regarding volunteers.

I reckon 125 people is easily doable. Especially given the distance is only 5 miles which should be within many people's capabilities after a bit of training.

Perhaps if it involved the other main forums (TB/BR) might give a bit of weight behind it? I don't know if it's something that would be of interest, or whether to just keep it to the one forum.

Great idea James but I do wonder if the club will agree as they may think it will set a precedent for other fund raisers . No harm in trying though

Could be pitched as a one-off for our 125th year. Plus the LOROS connection adds justification and weight to the proposal.

Yeah could do. Can't do it now but maybe I'll sign up and post the idea later. Unless someone with an account wants to post a link to this thread now?

I bet I could run at least 12 times as much as James.

..............

If they're not keen on you doing it inside, you could always do it around the outside of the stadium? If you timed it to finish at 2.45 or something you might be able to solicit donations in a bucket as people arrive as well.

Bloody good idea James.

Count me in.

Finding 125 people who are interested might be a bit hard to be honest, but over the 3 forums it may be possible.

I'm in though.

It's definitely possible. If we don't get enough on here we can go to Talking Balls and then after that I'm sure the club would agree to place an advert in a few of the matchday programmes throughout the season. Remember there's also friends and family of anyone on here that can also enter it.

As the idea has so far been greeted with a pretty good response I'll e mail Peter Jones tonight when I get home and see what he thinks.

Just e mailed the below to Peter Jones:

Hi Peter

I'm a regular poster on the internet forum Foxestalk and have a proposal for you regarding a possible charity event for next season.

With next season being our 125th anniversary I had the idea that we could combine the Birch's end of season run at the last home game with a run initially intended for members of Foxestalk to raise money for the away shirt sponsor, LOROS. The idea is that 125 people on the forum sign up and agree to raise a minimum of £100 for charity (giving at least £12,500 in total). On the last home game of the season we all do a certain number of laps of the pitch with Birchenhall. I have read that the pitch is 110 yards by 76 yards meaning a lap is about 340 metres. 25 laps would be 8.5km (just over 5 miles) which seems a reasonable distance to get around and attract sponsorship with. This would probably take about 35 minutes for the quicker runners and just over an hour for the slower ones.

I'd be very keen to hear your initial thoughts on this idea. If we were unable to attract 125 people on the website we would open up the run to members of other forums (e.g. Talking Balls) and whoever else was interested. It would be great if a promotion for the plan could be published in a few of the matchday programmes in the run up to the event and maybe even the Leicester Mercury. This would hopefully attract a few more people in to the ground to watch the event and could also increase the amount of sponsorship money raised.

I believe this is a great idea that uniquely combines the celebration of our 125th year with a great opportunity to raise a significant

amount of money for a local charity.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you

James Leeson

Good stuff James. I'm sure you will get a positive reply from this. After all, it is for a good cause and it is also in their best interest.
