Will Lloyd Dyer be good enough for left wing next season?

The way I look at it, we need cover for Dyer next season. He won't show consistency throughout the whole season but he needs to be more on song than not. At his best he will trouble any defence in the championship. I wouldn't worry about it.

As for other positions such as the front two, I think we need better, not cover. But that's for another thread.

After a fairly inconsistent season but a few goals, d'ya reckon pearson will stick with him or bring in another option?

Hope so, his confidence seems to effect his performance if you ask me :fc:

Completely off point but Curb Your Enthusiasm is awesome

He was one of our best, though I agree he could still do with thinking about cutting inside more often to mix it up. If he doesn't like the cold we could club together and buy him some thermal drawers.

He'll do a decent job.

He's got pace, which means he could trouble most right backs in the championship if he channels it correctly as mentioned before.

We need a holding midfield man, someone to break up play and add bite. A tenacious, ball-winning badass. This surely needs priority number 2 - behind goalkeepers.

He'll be inconsistent, again, BUT, Pearson hopefully won't take any prisoners, unlike this season where he kept alittle too much faith with Dyer more then once!!

I think your right. He played ok again after he'd been dropped.

He's fast enough, good finisher, just needs to get better crosses and maybe muscle up a bit.

have you seen the size of him!

This.

The competition for Dyer might have to be Gradel, though, as there will surely be higher priorities for transfer funds (striker, central midfield, goalkeeper, right back). However, I can't see Pearson wanting to start with 2 wingers in the Championship for fear of being over-run in midfield.

An on-form Dyer could be devastating on the counter-attack against the better Championship teams that push men forward. This season most of his goals and best performances were away from home or against the better L1 teams. Also, even during his extended spell of poor-form, he didn't give the ball away much, just didn't do enough with it - so he was under-achieving, not a liability.

Doesn't have the physique but neither did Campbell-Ryce and he's pushed on this season.

 He has the physique of a pacey winger, capable of taking on and beating full backs.

I think we all agree that the Championship is a step up on what we have seen this season. It will be a different style/pace of football.

The thing to remember, players can and will adapt. They can step up their game. So many times in the past, we have been pleasantly surprised with the effort our team puts in against supposedly superior sides (Spurs, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Fulham, Palace - to name a few of the recent cup games).

We need to bring in new players without doubt. Calling Dyer's ability into question is bollocks. Whilst a little more consistency is called for in his performances (what player doesn't suffer from this?), he will be an important player for us next season.

Of course he'll be good enough. The impressive thing about Dyer is that he doesn't just run at full-backs, he can score and he can make goals.

I don't think he's as fast as he looks sometimes and I'm not sure he'll relish the stronger more competitive full-backs of the Championship but I'm quite sure he'll be an asset.

In fact I wonder if either he or Gradel will find it easy to do 90-minute stints - Dyer because I don't think he's blessed with stamina in abundance and Gradel because his much-improved appetite for defensive responsibilities is bound to have an energy-sapping downside.

So it might be the perfect opportunity for Pearson to use both on a regular basis although I wouldn't ever lose sight of the fact that Gradel can play on the right and in the centre. Nor the fact that Dyer can play left-back.

Gradel plays better on the right, or so he says.

Only because he plays more often on the right.

I've long said I'd give Gradel lots of licence. Let him find whatever weaknesses are around in a defence.

Two or three seasons back Ronaldo was regarded as a right-winger and people would have laughed at the very idea of Gradel defending properly. Now look at Ronaldo - a nightmare for any defender wherever he plays - and look how determined Gradel is to win the ball back.

I'd be looking to expand Gradel's influence and value rather than restrict it.

I'd doubt the guy would let anyone down even at right-back nowadays and that's a measure of how his football horizons have changed.

Left-wing, right-wing, moving into the centre? No problem. He'd have things to learn - as he still does on the right - but he's shown already that he's willing to do that.

As mentioned before, the lad's a gem.

You seen his legs compared to the upper body? He hardly use his body either.

Reminds me of Stephen Hughes in some respects. Clearly a cracking footballer but he didn't have the physique to play in the CCC.

I would think that he may get a little more room in the division above as more teams try to attack against us and not just defend for a draw. Whether he is good enough to exploit it only time will tell. He has earned the chance to at least prove he can and was magnificent for us last month.

Dyer has the ability currently to run for the entire 90 minutes without too much fuss. Putting on extra muscle, given his frame/build may slow him down.

He either needs to improve his crossing quite a bit, or stop taking it round the outside of the defender every time, he seems to be far more effective when he cuts inside towards the goal, but doesn't do it enough.

I read on here a while back that the MK Dons fans reckon he doesn't like the cold weather and his bad patch did coincide with the winter so there could be something in it.

If that it is the case then we can't rely on a player who's only any good when the sun is shining.

What a load of rubbish, in fact I think this is quite racist and insults Dyer and other black players. Are we in the 1970's again? He doesnt like the cold give me a break. He had a loss of form in the middle of the season thats it. He was rightly dropped and came back a better player, a loss of form happens all the time. Even to white players! Not because the bloody sun is out. I cant believe some people on this site A for suggesting such a thing and B the other muppets for beliving this twaddle! Dyer is one of the best wingers we've had at city for many years, hes got the lot speed, skill and an eye for goal. Ok sometimes he can drift out of a game, thats not because its cloudy jeez! Id start with him every week come rain sun sleet or snow!

I don't like the cold winters and I'm 10x blacker than Lloyd Dyer. There's gotta be an element of truth in that theory. It's a bit of coincidence though that he turned shit from November to February.
