He will be lucky to get a starting place in he Man City team let alone whether he will be at club for over 20 years. Ridiculous Tommy G has returned!! Where did Finnegan ever say either of those players would be as good? If you read the post he was responding to Basingstoke Fox's point about players being as loyal to a club as Maldini. Also, lets be honest, it's pretty easy to remain loyal when it's a club like AC Milan. I'm not taking anything away from his acheivements as a player. It's just that when you're playing for one of the best clubs in the world and you're still good enough to get games for them when you hit your 40s there's no chance of you upping sticks and going else where, is there?

Exactly. Which is why I threw Micah Richards and Stephen Ireland's names down. If they keep performing for City you can see them sticking around. They're hardly going to leave with the potential for wages they have there. Maldini has been one of the best servants to the game we may ever see of our generation but being loyal to one club when you're a player that good is largely about being lucky enough to start your career there. Alessandro Nesta is an absolute hero and has played his career much in the shadow of Maldini. I don't see him as less of a player because he started his career elsewhere.

It makes me sad that he never won what he and another hero of mine Roberto Baggio deserved to win, a world cup. A gentleman on and off the field and a true footballing great. I am sure his farewell will be as emotional as Baggio.

Raul's got some years left in him and I wouldn't be surprised if he spends them at Real. Micah Richards and Stephen Ireland if they continue to serve their purpose with the increased cashflow at Eastlands? Raul is a reasonable player to mention but Gerrard and Terry are by comparison mere part timers - if they played every league match for the next decade they'd still not have made as many appearances as Maldini.

Hitesh Posted 18 May 2009 Posted 18 May 2009 The guy is a legend, I grew up watching this guy on Football Italia on C4 and every time I watched him defend it was like an art - he optimises the classic Italian defender. I rank him up there with Pele and Maradona in that he has archived so much, shown a great deal of loyalty, represented his country and the highest level and incredible versatile. Seems like a nice guy off the field too!

Maldini played at Milan all his career, because he loves them and would probably played for nothing too. I can imagine him being a very good coach.

And also because they were a good team winning Serie A titles and Champions League titles. It's a lot easier to remain loyal when you're playing for a good team (and you're good enough to get first team games obviously).
