Queens And Wimbledon 2009 Thread

Recommended Posts

Queens Championship gets underway today. One of the hot favourites, Rafa Nadal pulled out last week to avoid the risk of injuring his knee anymore before Wimbledon.

Andy Murray is currently favourite around the betting market to win Queens, just ahead of Andy Roddick..

As usual, Roger Federer, winner of the French Open, will be playing at Halle instead of Queens.

At Wimbledon, it is the first chance for the new Centre Court with a retractable roof to come into effect. There is also a new Court Two on show for this year.

So, who are your favourites? Who would you like to see victorious?

Queens Final: Murray v Roddick

Winner: Murray

Wimbledon Final: Federer v Nadal

Winner: Federer

I would prefer Nadal to win Wimbledon but I can't see it happening, Fed's French Open win will boost his confidence so much that backing anyone else apart Fed would be silly at the minute.

Can see maybe a Semi-Final place for Murray but unfortunetly can't see him making the Final, so hope I'm wrong.

Hope Nadal gets through to Wimbledon final. And I feel there might be a shock on the cards regarding Federer. Might go out in Semis. Gonzalez and Soderling will be high on confidence as well I feel for how far they got at Roland Garros.

I know Soderling lost in the final but he should be pleased with how well he did.

Come on Tim

I think everyone will expect Murray to try and fight to win Wimbledon but he will fail at the semi's I predict

As everyone knows, I'm not Murray's biggest fan... but I'm making a serious comment about his chances this time.

Murray is very good at defending, and that should have been a huge advantage on the slower clay courts, yet he failed to make it past the quarters which was a bit of a shock. At Wimbledon, he'll have to work much harder to defend the way he did at the Roland Garros and it'll be interesting to see how he fairs this time round against some of the big hitters. He does however possess a very strong forehand and that will work wonders on a fast low bouncing grass court... it'll depend on the draw but I think he could make the quarters again... I just can't see him getting much further than that as when things start to go wrong, his mentality goes and he starts to make all sorts of errors which cost him vital points.

On a more biased note... I hope he crashes out in the first round. :)

Anyone got tickets, or going to Wimbledon?

I think I'll be going again next year, enjoyed it last time round. Hopefully blag some more centre court tickets off some corporate toffs like last time as well.

Funnily enough...I agree with the total opposites.

Defensive ability is not what makes a clay courter...sure it helps to be a good defender, but that applies to all courts. Murray does not possess the power to hit through opponents on clay and this is his weakness on the surface...you can defend all you like but owing to the nature of the surface, the ball simply sits up and waits to be smacked away unlike on hard and grass courts. Look at Gonzalez and Soderling....both massive forehands...both hit superior players off a clay court (Murray, Davydenko, Nadal).

On quicker surfaces like grass and hard courts, the lessened reaction times negate the abilites of players like Gonzalez to continually rip their forehand wherever he likes, you simply don't get as many chances nor into as many rallies owing to the pace of the surface. Murray can utilise his skills on the return of serve, the low slice back hand and double handed cross court backhand (his forehand is much weaker than the backhand...it's not even a top 20 forehand) to dictate the pace of points...something he is not equipped to do on clay courts. Volleying ability also counts for much....players like Del Potro would be a huge danger at Wimbledon if he possessed the requisite volleying skills but...I'm pretty sure he won't be troubling anyone after the 4th round/Quarter Finals.

I think he'll get to the QF/SF again myself.

I've got tickets for men's qf and I can normally get hold of tickets for another day, so I hope to be there for a couple of days.

I'm going too, got tickets to the mens semi's :D

Federer will win Wimbledon I think, with Rafa's knee playing a big part. Can see these two making the final, with Murray and Djokovic will go in the Semi's. These four are dominating the mens game atm.

Will watch a fair bit of it, but never watch the final, for some reason which I do not know.

Women's is so unpredictable, I'm not even gonna say.

Think what you wanna think about this being a sexist opinion or whatever, but to be honest as a neutral tennis watcher women's tennis to me is kind of pointless right now (like scottish football) and has been for the last couple of years. There isn't really any particular players that dominate (the williams sisters have won lots but not dominated like federer or nadal)

also i think it's fair to say that the quality of the tennis is loads more diluted through the womens draw as opposed to the men's. The top 30 men are all very, very good players. But you look at the women and it's only really the top 8-10 that give each other trouble. This plus the stupid 3 set system that women are forced into just make it far more predictable and less entertaining than men's tennis.

Also FED vs NAD if nadal is fit and playing (Federer to win but all depends on nadals fitness and form)

or if nadal doesn't play FED to win vs Murray

Is Del Potro any good on grass? From what I've seen this year he's going to be a class act, though I'm backing Fed to reclaim his crown.

Surely it's better then, if no-one's dominating? The truth is, that the woman's game is getting better and is closer than it's ever been, which is why anyone from possibly 16 could win it, just look at when Sharapova won it, No-one expected that and it was brilliant.

The mens game is much more predictable - The top seed in the mens wins it more times than the top seed in the womans does.

Except Goran Ivanisavich that year :@

If he was english you'd all be wetting yourself over him. Get over it, he's scottish and the best british tennis player for decades. FACT!

Anyone got tickets, or going to Wimbledon?

Court one on Womens quarter final day.

First time i've been but enjoyed Nottingham last year so hopefully it will be good, and the weather is nice.

Nottingham was great last year, saw Karlovic, Monfils, Cilic, Simon, Verdasco, Seppi play, and tickets were massively cheaper at Nottingham than Wimbledon, and obviously it only takes 45 minutes to get there :P

It's all down to the weather really, and whether Sharapova is on :D

Nadal hopes to play at Wimbledon: (From BBC)

World number one Rafael Nadal says he will give "200%" as he bids to be fit in time to defend his Wimbledon title.

The 22-year-old pulled out of Queen's with knee trouble and has been undergoing tests in Barcelona.

"I will give 200% to be at 100% for the most important date in world tennis," said Nadal in a statement on Tuesday.

The Spaniard, who beat Roger Federer in a classic final in 2008, will now undergo intense rehabilitation ahead of the start of Wimbledon on 22 June.

He plans to travel to London on 16 June.

Getting mixed messages from his comments.

I rekon it's still 50/50 for him to play or not.

He hasn't actually said i will be fit for Wimbledon.

But i suppose if he does play and wins it will be amazing, if he doesn't he will blame the injury.
