UK has highest crime rate in Europe

Analysis of figures from the European Commission showed a 77 per cent increase in murders, robberies, assaults and sexual offences in the UK since Labour came to power.

The total number of violent offences recorded compared to population is higher than any other country in Europe, as well as America, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

Opposition leaders said the disclosures were a "damning indictment" of the Government's failure to tackle deep-rooted social problems.

The figures combined crime statistics for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The UK had a greater number of murders in 2007 than any other EU country – 927 – and at a relative rate higher than most western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

It also recorded the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU, and the highest absolute number of burglaries, with double the number of offences recorded in Germany and France.

Overall, 5.4 million crimes were recorded in the UK in 2007 - more than 10 a minute - second only to Sweden.

And who do you think is committing all these crimes BlabyFox?

Possibly black people

But seriously, probably the poorly educated students products of the terrible Labour education system.

I think it's definitely time that the law got tough and Police have their hands untied, their pens put down and are freed to go and sort out criminals. I fear where this might come from though if not Labour.

Yeah but take scotland & NI away and its much better. :D

Odd that sweden has a higher rate than us.

13th highest murder rate - not bad considering...

Belgium, Spain, France and Portugal all have a higher robbery rate, odd that a lot of people emigrating state 'they want to get away from the crime rate' as the board a flight to spain.

Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands have more burglaries, ask anyone on the street who's got the highest rate I bet everyone would say the UK.

Plus there are diifferences in the way reported crime is taken in various countries.

As for england I would say the rates aren't great but there are plenty of other countries who have it worse.

All their criminals are blonde and good looking so no one there really minds

Crime statistics are practically worthless.

I gave someone a barrel full of cash for some the other day. It looks like I've been had

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but about 1 in 8 Swedish citizens are first or second generation immigrants, which I know has caused them some problems. And of course Sweden's a rich country...

It's the criminals who are to blame, I reckon

These damned criminals.

They come over here, they steal our cars and they don't even speak proper English. I'd send them all back to Criminalistan myself.

Really? I think you'll find people from all backgrounds, well educated or poorly educated, commit crime.

As far as I'm aware didn't our crime-rate practically double overnight at one point when new reporting methods started?

Overall crime rates increased, but it was the inclusion of a number of so-called minor offences that lead to the larger increase. There is also the fact that new crimes have been 'made', so to speak. There is also the way that some forces report each crime committed by an individual, but some report only one crime, which is either the more serious, or the one that is the easiest to get a conviction for. If that makes sense.
