Leicester City dish up more fun for travelling fans

David Bevan gives a fan's view of the Carling Cup clash:

Leicester City have a fine recent record against lower-league opposition in cup competitions and the sizeable City away following left the Moss Rose Ground happy after a comfortable win.

Last season's away form made travelling a pleasant experience in League One and Macclesfield offered little more than the likes of Cheltenham and Walsall in terms of a threat on City's goal.

Thankfully, the rain held off all game, which allowed City fans a decent view of a slightly unusual-looking side.

Young right-back Luke O'Neill looked assured in possession, something which bodes well for the long season ahead. On the other side of the back four, evergreen Chris Powell provided some unlikely forays forward in addition to a generally solid defensive performance.

However, one man is threatening to steal the headlines early on and it was his goal which finally put City ahead on the hour mark.

Dany N'Guessan is more versed in the ways of League Two defending than the majority of our squad and took the knocks better than most.

There was plenty of honest aggression from the home side but City dominated throughout, Richie Wellens going close when he could have done better in the first half before Matty Fryatt's goalbound shot was blocked on the line.

And so to N'Guessan's strike. The ball was won brilliantly by Howard in the air despite the close attentions of three Macclesfield defenders, before a mix-up in the six-yard box allowed N'Guessan to back-heel home cheekily in front of the travelling support.

We are quickly warming to N'Guessan and, although he may at some stage suffer a similar dip in form to that of Lloyd Dyer last season, we could reap a huge reward from his signing.

The second goal arrived shortly afterwards, Fryatt racing clear of the home defence before rifling a left-foot shot high into the roof of the net.

The familiar Fryatt song rang out from the away end in a flashback to last season.

The challenge will again be Championship defences in the coming months.

But the ferocity of his finish here again suggested renewed confidence.

There was time for neat play from Wellens, Nicky Adams and substitute Martyn Waghorn to be loudly appreciated by the Blue Army.

And the assured manner of this win will do much to settle nerves ahead of tricky away trips to Ipswich and Sheffield United in the week ahead.

Following Leicester up and down the country has rarely been more fun than this.

Really interesting to do. I didn't make any notes or anything so the whole thing was done from memory on a laptop travelling through the Peak District, sent in by email (thanks to some electronic heroics from Katy) at 10.15pm!!

Actually, if you read the match report presumably written by this new chap from the Birmingham Mail, it's extremely comprehensive and a good read. Looks like he will be a better bet than Anderson already, fingers crossed. Especially good considering he can't know the players that well.

450 words isn't that much once you get going so I tried to cover as much as possible. Hopefully Ipswich will be an improvement as there's a Sunday noon deadline for that, loadsa time!! :)

Good article you wrote there, thanks. Interesting to compare your piece with the other one on thebluearmy.co.uk this morning, in which the reporter can't resist cliches like 'wonder-strike'. Fryatt's goal was great, but no need to resort to such journalistic cliche. Your piece sounded like a considered fan writing about the team he loves, and I look forward to reading more of the same. As you note it is indeed far harder to write a concise piece than it is to produce a longer article. Therein lies the skill of the wordsmith.

Thanks again

If you come back from a game fuming or absolutely delighted about something you'll probably be trimming whole paragraphs. :D

Is there a little picture of you in the byline?

You were the only (very vague) reference I managed to get in actually, if you notice the bit about Chris Powell's generally solid performance.

Must do better. lol

The match report has "French flair", "audacious back-heel" and "spectacular solo strike" in the opening two paragraphs!

Liked it Fez. Do you ever make notes at matches though, cos some of the reports I've seen you do on here have been a little more indepth. My only minor criticism (if it can be called that - given it's written in a hurry whilst travelling home and it was a first effort, it was top notch!)

Looking forward to Monday's Merc.

T'was a good article.

On the subject of journalistic cliches, is anyone else getting sick of seeing the word 'starlet' when referring to any decent player under the age of 23? Sky Sports uses it with annoying frequency.
