StanSP Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/8283061.stm Decision is made today, with Barack and Michelle Obama fronting Chicago's bid. Who do you think it should go to? Who would you like to win the decision to hold the Olympics in 2016?
Guest Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Tokyo / Rio US and Spain have hosted them 'relatively' recently
Guest Bilo Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Something to be said for all of them though you can probably rule out Madrid with the 2012 Olympics being held in London, the IOC are unlikely to give it to Europe again. Spain's much-documented problems with racism in sport are unlikely to swing it their way either. Rio would probably need a lot of work on infrastructure and crime and the Maracana would be hideously expensive to replace or upgrade. Chicago could well be in with a shout, a decent city with excellent infrastructure and sporting facilities already in place but they do seem to like giving the Games to capital cities so my guess would be Tokyo, seeing as it has been one hell of a time since they were held in Japan.
ACF Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Hopefully Spain or Japan. Want to add it to the tour. 2014 WC- Brazil 2016 Olympics- ?? 2018 WC- England *hopes* 2020 Olympics- ?? 2022 WC- Australia?? Expensive I know! Can't go to the 2012 Olympics because I'll be in my VCE year (last year of High School)

Guest Bilo Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Is the 2022 WC already been confirmed to Australia?? Don't know about confirmed, but some of the noises coming from FIFA suggests they're very likely to get either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Cool. And from your logic earlier, it doesn't sound like Madrid will win today because of it being same continent. When's the last time Tokyo had it then?

But we'll get one of them for sure, and England will get the other.

When's the last time Tokyo had it then? The IOC do like to move the Games around a lot more than FIFA like to move the World Cup. As well as London 2012, the 2004 Games were held in Athens as well, so I'd be very surprised if Madrid made it a hat-trick. 64 I think, coulld be wrong though. Correct. The US hosted them in 1996 in Atlanta, Spain hosted the 1992 Games in Barcelona and though no Brazilian city has hosted them, they probably aren't seen as being as major an Olympic nation as Japan. Whoops. But we'll get one of them for sure, and England will get the other. I'm guessing England will win the 2018 WC and the Aussies will get 2022.
StanSP Posted 2 October 2009 Author Posted 2 October 2009 Correct. The US hosted them in 1996 in Atlanta, Spain hosted the 1992 Games in Barcelona and though no Brazilian city has hosted them, they probably aren't seen as being as major an Olympic nation as Japan. First time for everything
purpleronnie Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Well as a former Chicago resident I hope they get it, amazing city.
Smiffy Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Tokyo and Chicago are out. Its between Rio and Madrid
lildave3 Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Chicago first out, followed by Tokyo. Surely it's going to be in Rio now...
Guest Bilo Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Congrats to Rio, didn't expect that but I'm sure it'll be a great Olympic city. The hard work for Brazil starts here though, as they aim to be more Beijing 2008 than Athens 2004.
Ultra Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Massive coup for Brazil - especially after also landing the 2014 World Cup. But it's about time South America hosted a Games.
AjcW Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Will be an interesting games, beautiful, vibrant city.
I am Rod Hull Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 So who will get the 2020 games? Tokyo? Istanbul? Madrid? Tokyo for me.
Finnegan Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 MON THE TOKYO! I'll totally go if Tokyo gets it. Bolt most likely to be playing for United by then though!
separator Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 Can Spain even afford to put on an Olympics, the country is pretty much broke isn't it? (apart from Real Madrid of course)
