davieG Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Source - http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/bl...icle176143.html 10) Shola Ameobi (Newcastle United) It really shouldn't be going this well for the Magpies, according to the script, with a caretaker manager and a hated owner, but Newcastle's brilliant start to the season has been due in no small part to Ameobi, who has already scored as many goals this season as he did for the whole of 2008-09, earning himself the Championship player of the month award for August. 9) Lee Hughes (Notts County) Now 33, the experienced striker joined Notts County in the summer, and marked his debut with a hat-trick against Bradford, before picking up another match ball against Northampton. In total, Hughes has netted nine times to head up the League Two scoring charts and put an end to those fanciful rumours that the millionaire Magpies are on the brink of signing Ljungberg/Figo/Vieri. 8) Adam le Fondre (Rotherham United) Nicknamed Alfie, the 22-year-old has become a terrace idol at the Don Valley Stadium since joining the Millers from Rochdale in the summer. Noted for his spectacular strikes, the influential striker has scored seven times in League Two so far this season after marking his first start, against Grimsby, with a goal from the spot. 7) Marcus Tudgay (Sheffield Wednesday) The 26-year-old never really fulfilled his potential at first club Derby thanks to a string of injuries, including one sustained treading on glass at a barbecue. But he's been a hit since signing for the Owls in 2006, earning the PFA Fans Championship Player of the Year award last season. A target for Burnley in the summer, he's scored five League goals so far this season. 6) Leon Best (Coventry City) The Sky Blues striker has already earned international recognition, winning his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in May. Famed for his Zorro mask, worn to protect a fractured cheekbone, the 23-year-old, who models himself on Nicolas Anelka, has scored six times this season, including two against Watford on Tuesday night. 5) Nicky Maynard (Bristol City) The 22-year-old is a graduate of the famous Crewe Alexandra academy that also produced Dean Ashton, and proved himself a promising successor to the England striker with 34 goals in two full seasons at Gresty Road. He joined Bristol City in 2008 for £2.2m, and got the current campaign off to a spectacular start with six League goals, including a 25-yard scorcher against Coventry. 4) Danny Graham (Watford) The Gateshead-born striker has been something of a footballing nomad, spending time at five different clubs on loan after failing to make the breakthrough at Boro. But after a successful spell at Carlisle, the 24-year-old seems to have found his niche at Watford. A real nuisance to defenders, Graham has scored half a dozen times since his summer transfer for a bargain £200,000. 3) Matty Fryatt (Leicester City) Last season, the Leicester marksman netted 32 times in total for the Foxes, and the 23-year-old has started this campaign at the same devastating pace, netting seven times in the Championship so far, including a double against Blackpool and two more in a 3-3 draw with Watford. 2) Jermaine Beckford (Leeds United) Premier League clubs are queuing up to get their hands on the prolific Leeds number 9, but the pacy 25-year-old has brushed aside the prospect of moving on, exclaiming "What shirt am I wearing, bruv? You being serious?" Beckford has scored seven goals for the Elland Road club this season to fire them to the top of League One. 1) Michael Chopra (Cardiff City) He might not have cut it in the Premier League at either Newcastle or Sunderland, but the 25-year-old is loving life in the Championship, having netted 11 times for Cardiff so far this season, including four against Derby on Tuesday night. If he carries on at the same rate, the lethal finisher could get another crack at the top-flight next season with the Bluebirds.
ACF Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Well, according to many sources on here, LD3 should be on here. Dissapointing.
sdb Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 I thought it meant in Europe. You can imagine my reaction when I saw Ameobi come in at no.10!!
MC Prussian Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Time will tell whether Fryatt deserves this nomination. I know he's continuing where he's left last season, but it's still early to tell. BTW: What's with the Swiss flag, aussiecityfan??
Fox92 Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Chopra is by far the best striker outside the Prem but Beckford ahead of Fryatt?
Sly Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 This list is so wrong. Half the strikers in the Championship are better than Lee Hughes!!
ACF Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Time will tell whether Fryatt deserves this nomination. I know he's continuing where he's left last season, but it's still early to tell.BTW: What's with the Swiss flag, aussiecityfan?? Rellies are Swiss, love the country, have a Swiss football shirt, and am desperately seeking a FC Basle one. Oh and Happy Birthday.
MC Prussian Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Rellies are Swiss, love the country, have a Swiss football shirt, and am desperately seeking a FC Basle one.Oh and Happy Birthday. Oh, great to hear you got Swiss roots. As for the FC Basel shirt, I could help you out with getting one and having it shipping to Ozzieland. Just let me know. I live about an hour away by train, so I could pick it up myself in a first move, then pass it on to you.
lildave3 Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Well, according to many sources on here, LD3 should be on here. Dissapointing. ! I thought it meant in Europe. You can imagine my reaction when I saw Ameobi come in at no.10!! So did I! I was gonna say David Villa must be livid with this list.
Edmund Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 I thought it meant in Europe. You can imagine my reaction when I saw Ameobi come in at no.10!! Snap This list is so wrong. Most ridiculous list ive ever seen.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Think I'd agree but Fryatt sould be above Beckford who has done fook all in the Championship.
leicesterfox86 Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Lee Hughes?! That is crazy! How can he possibly be in there? Any idea what this is based on? Don't get me wrong, I am pleased that Fryatt is getting recognition, but some of the names on the list take the credibility away from it.
Guest Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 So did I! I was gonna say David Villa must be livid with this list. He's gotta get in line behind Fryatt and Shola Lee Hughes?! That is crazy! How can he possibly be in there? Any idea what this is based on? Don't get me wrong, I am pleased that Fryatt is getting recognition, but some of the names on the list take the credibility away from it. I'm guessing it's based upon having bugger all else to write about and needing to fill some space, combined with taking a quick glance at the leading scorers in the FL, then throwing their names into a hat and randomly plucking them out
dandannieldanok Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Lee Hughes?! That is crazy! How can he possibly be in there? Any idea what this is based on? Don't get me wrong, I am pleased that Fryatt is getting recognition, but some of the names on the list take the credibility away from it. He shouldn't be in list but he does score a lot of goals. Ever since his release from prison he's been scoring for fun. No McLean? Or Mickail-Smith? Been found out a bit at championship level, as their chairman and manager strain to point out, Peterborough create a hatful of chances but don't take them. Quality at League One and League Two level though.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 No McLean? Or Mickail-Smith? Been found out a bit at championship level, as their chairman and manager strain to point out, Perterborough create a hatful of chances but don't take them. Quality at League One and League Two level though. They arent there because they are overrated. Like dandannieldanok says they have been found out. Posh struggle up front as they dont have a big man. They create chances but both especially CMS need 3 chances to score.
Guest Bilo Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 10) Shola Ameobi (Newcastle United) It really shouldn't be going this well for the Magpies, according to the script, with a caretaker manager and a hated owner, but Newcastle's brilliant start to the season has been due in no small part to Ameobi, who has already scored as many goals this season as he did for the whole of 2008-09, earning himself the Championship player of the month award for August. Deserves his place and if Newcastle fail to bounce straight back, he'll have few problems finding a Premiership club. Too old now and too slow to compete at Championship level. Is a good League One striker and a brilliant League Two striker, but not much more. Unproven in higher echelons of Football League but a good future. Seems a premature addition. Surprised he isn't in the Premiership already, a fine player who should be playing at a higher level. Fine player but one of the best outside the Premiership seems a bit much. Deserves his place here and has a big future in the game. Will play at a higher level in the next three years without a doubt. Caused us severe problems but a bit too early to tell if he's a Championship star. Is looking confident, fit and very dangerous indeed. Like Maynard, I expect to see him at a higher level in a couple of years. Let's hope it's with us. Quick and very dangerous at League One, but wholly unproven at a higher level. Seems a flattering ranking under the circumstances. Really should be at a higher level and his capture by Cardiff was a real coup. Can't argue with the ranking.
dandannieldanok Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Earnie. Should be in there comfortably despite his form.
Lillehamring Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 Lee Hughes?! That is crazy! How can he possibly be in there? Any idea what this is based on? Don't get me wrong, I am pleased that Fryatt is getting recognition, but some of the names on the list take the credibility away from it. it was compiled by ash17lcfc, and is based purely on popularity, and has nothing to do talent or quality.... chopra is number one, he'll never change the world, but has a catchy name, and after realising that he had severe technical limitations, he settled for a very mediocre level within which he has seemingly excelled... his name sells on more shirts than anyother striker in the world. FACT.
Daggers Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 @ people who believe Fryatt is better than Beckford...
Shane Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 People who are complaining, make your own list and we'll see if we agree?
Budweiser Posted 2 October 2009 Posted 2 October 2009 @ people who believe Fryatt is better than Beckford... I'd prefer Fryatt to Beckford any day. Basically because Beckford is the biggest twat ever. Mentalist on a football pitch.
