Karljohn Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 After todays 3 off 3 on strikers substitutions, do we start with Waggy v Derby? Use Howard as an impact player if Fryatt isnt firing? DJ campbell? Yann? Gallagher? just where do we start and who do we start?!
Ozwin Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 It's a nice problem to have compared to years gone by.

Yann? Gallagher? just where do we start and who do we start?! I think it will be a Fryatt/Yann combo again myself, giving that pairing a real good go if theres no injuries or incidents before then. I would like to see Gallagher dropped though, if Pearson fancies going 4-3-3 from the off then Waghorn can join the Fryatt, Yann party, with Wellens in the middle, Oakley and Dyer on the wings. I wouldn't mind Oakley been dropped but as the club captain that isn't going to happen, Wellens will hopefully play though, i would settle for a Wellens Oakley central pairing with Dyer and N'Guessan/Adams on the right. But before todays game you'd say our only decent scoring striker who had any chance of hitting the net was Fryatt, now Pearson has sent out a stern warning to fellow Championship clubs, that you will not only have to deal with Matty, but Frenchy, Waggy, Deej, Gallagher and Howard aswell. All of a sudden we have striking options it seems. Because today Pearson decided to use them, and it nearly won us the game.
StanSP Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 It's a nice problem to have compared to years gone by. This. It's better to have a selection of strikers than to be thin on the ground with them.

TrickyTrev Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Howard looks more useful as an impact sub rather than a player to build your side round. When a defense sits back and you can afford to get lots of attacking players round him he is a lot more effective than in general play. If Wellens is fit I would like to see Gallalgher and Fryatt tried with Oakley on the right wing, where he played his best football las year.
Thracian Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Goiing 4-3-3 is interesting and has at least resulted in a few other players getting on the scoresheet apart from Fryatt. But our lack of width - even Dyer wasn't operating as a genuine wide player - meant it was so difficult for the central midfield players to find a pass. Their work wasn't helped by another dose of hoof ball and the resulting head tennis from our defence and the perhaps exagerrated lack of forward momentum from our full-backs because of the threat posed by Coventry's forwards. Apart from the full-backs Gallagher might be the key. Replace him with an attacking player like Gradel who can and will go wide and work back to make himself available for passes and we might be more fluid. Something like: Gradel, King, Wellens; Fryatt, DJ, Dyer. With Howard, Waghorn, Kergo and Gallagher in reserve. And Oakley at right-back so we do get some forward momentum. Oakley/Gradel could work together and there would be the benefit of Gradel taking dead ball kicks. Cos Oakley simply doesn't hack it.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Oakley - King - Wellens Fryatt - Howard - Waghorn
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 For me Howard really has to start. Kermorgant and Fryatt wernt working at all, for whatever reason maybe they just need more game time. DJ came on and did a job whilst Waghorn topped off a impressive display by scoring. For me Fryatt and Howard starting with two of DJ, Kermo and Waghorn on the bench.
Ozwin Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Leicester playing 4-3-3 is about as exotic as we're ever going to get. I'd love to have that formation week in week out.
TrickyTrev Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Leicester playing 4-3-3 is about as exotic as we're ever going to get. I'd love to have that formation week in week out. We were lumping it up to Steve Howard with two forward players to feed off the flick ons ala Bolton and Kevin Davies, it is hardly exotic.
lildave3 Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Oakley - King - WellensFryatt - Howard - Waghorn Would like that, although harsh on Lloyd. For me, it's a must that Waghorn starts against Derby.
davieG Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 I think the 433 was only possible because of the toy town pitch.
Matt Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 I fear Waghorn might be this season Marton Fulop, Someone who we should and need to sign, I worry Milan won't get his cheque book out though.
lou Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 I fear Waghorn might be this season Marton Fulop, Someone who we should and need to sign, I worry Milan won't get his cheque book out though. Sunderland rate him very highly and wont sell
lou Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 I happen to know the Sunderland Chairman VERY well He was the academy player of the year before he came here and I recall it was widely reported when we signed him that he was highly thought of at Sunderland? Signed a 2 and a half year contract in 2008. I CBA to look back at the thread though
Mikey Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Oakley - King - WellensFryatt - Howard - Waghorn I think that would be quality, dunno whether I'd choose Steve or Yann though. Probably Steve.
Salieri Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Be great if we could snap up Waggy but i doubt we'd get him, he is very well thought of at Sunderland. That said, i didnt think we'd manage to prise Hobbs away from Liverpool, so you never know. As for the strikers, its just great that we have so much competiton, all of them know (even Fryatt!) that they need to be at the top of their game to keep their place. I've not been DJ's biggest fan BUT if he really has changed his attitude and wants to fight for his place, then it can only bode well for the squad as a whole.
Corky Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 Fryatt Howard Waghorn, with a midfield three of Oakley, Wellens and Dyer.
Libertine Posted 3 October 2009 Posted 3 October 2009 In a midfield three, you can't really be having wingers. You need three centre mids, but with a tendency to drift about. Wellens, King and Oakley would be perfect.
